Midnight Onyx: Shadows In The Mist

Arc 1: The Vanishing Echo

A cold dusk creeps over the Hakkai Mountains. Seina Mori grips a half-torn notebook as wind howls between the ancient pines. Her green-brown eyes shift to her brother, Takumi, who shivers in his stained school jacket. Ten people. One mentor. Three days for school camping—but everything changes when their teacher vanishes after a strange fog rolls into camp. What would you do if you went out in a group, but only silence came back from the forest?

Seina tries to take charge. She’s grounded, sharp-tongued, but that care hides under a shell from years as Takumi’s guardian. He, once loud, now twists his sleeves and stays close to Rei, a clever but jumpy second-year. The others grumble, voice fear behind Seina’s back. Trust cracks fast when the woods grow thick. Their phone bars fade out to nothing. That emptiness squeezes all their throats.

Night is sharp, full of small clicks. Shadows move in fog. A second mentor—a new hire, Ms. Nanase—speaks up but flinches at all sounds behind their campsite. Takumi’s voice gets hoarse: “Seina, look—are those footprints leading into the riverbank? But who’s walking after us?” She brushes him off. Rei presses a hand-clenched map into her palm. Some say he’s seeing things. Others aren’t so sure. Have you ever thought you saw something when nobody else did?

Conflict Swells: In dark hours, supplies vanish. No one sees it happen—the food bag simply isn’t on the hook any longer. People blame Rei, voice cracks in heated whispers. Mina, a fierce athlete, rages. Toshi pulls away to watch. Seina hardly sleeps. Ms. Nanase sets shifts to watch, but on her own turn she nearly drops the alarm whistle hearing voices in the woods. aicg-9442-img-2-6a3a3ae922574.png

Murmurs swirl: Is there ‘something else’ out here? Takumi finds a sock caught twenty feet up in the trees, stained with dark clay. On day two, Jun and Yoko—best friends—have vanished. Their blankets? There, folded cold. No prints in the soft dirt. Nobody saw them go.

A thick hauling sound moves through trees at noon. Everyone stops breathing. Rei starts repeating lines from the torn notebook: “If the fog lingers, the ones who stay forget the exit.” The note looks twenty years old. Mina corners Rei. “Where’d you get that? What’s it mean—‘night dew hides tracks forever, walk while noise still echoes…’?” Tension stings more deep than fear now. Do you believe in old forest curses yourself?

The Hidden Truth: Seina edges away at dusk, determined. She follows odd flashes—strips of modern plastic buried in moss, battered whistle peeking from ivy. In a dusty grove she finds a lean-to half-collapsed. An ID tag dangles from faded string, showing a smiling girl—Chisato Mori. Their own missing aunt. For Seina, cold truth’ hits. Was Chisato caught by the same ‘fog’? She demands answers from Ms. Nanase. But the teacher refuses eye contact, almost knows too much. Death chill trickles down Seina’s neck. aicg-9442-img-3-6a3a3b5f4bb0a.png

Back near the fire, group panic is erupting. Toshi nearly decks Rei when tent lines get cut. Takumi can’t form words. Mina starts burning scraps to build smoke—maybe it’ll call help. Instead, the fog moves closer. Jumbled shadows flick about. On the notebook margin: scribbled again and again, “Don’t go alone. Follow the echoes before the mist eats sound.”

Arc 2: Lost Names

This section slices day three open. Tensions explode. Ms. Nanase falls from a river boulder chasing a rabbit, quart glass smashing out of her bag. There’s a hidden radio taped beneath. Whispers. It’s made strange contacts all night but only gives static now. Seina tries to rewire it; sparks, but brief static soon vanishes. Everyone looks more haunted, pale in weak sun.

Amanda from third grade group finds a stickman totem beneath her sleeping mat. Tiny letters—a single name “Chisato”—strikes dread. Conversation falters. Yoko suddenly “forgot” her own age.

The notebook, now taken from Rei, keeps drawing eyes. Pages flip during wind without touch. Documents from forty years ago are pasted in blank spaces, records of five lost campers labelled “Initium 1974”. What truth hides in the school files about field trip agreements?

Seina breaks—she cracks the group’s structure to charge upward, dragging the group leader badge she’s had since age eleven. “Listen to me! If you split or leave this fire, you won’t come back the same! Tighten lines. Check headcounts. Stop talking about punishment—now we trust each other.”

At each meal, something is spoiled. Berries found stripped, packed rice soaking wet hours late. Mina wails, chopping bread so hard that Takumi just blurts, “This isn’t about hunger!” Someone hurls the map—the torn corner says “trust no lights past woods round three.” Where is round three? It’s drawn cryptic at page back as angry spirals. Whose page is that? aicg-9442-img-4-6a3a3baca2b1c.png

Echoes Deepen: Late, Seina slips with the notebook through bramble farther up. Finds initials carved deep into a tree, same style as the badge she wears. A sick feeling passes through her—her aunt’s badge, her own, camp lost how many? The group calls out, choked by odd ringing: “Seina? Seina! You promised!” But there’s no reply. Distance splinters voices. Heavy footfalls crack twigs. Only stuttered echoes come back now.

Lights flicker on the far ridge, moving not-right. They blink—morse? Blurred faces. Black daubs from paint or mud flop on faces. Smoke both helps and hides. In the last page of the notepad, under blacked-out text—letters appear on Rei’s arm in chalk. Mina reads out loud, cries in wild fear:

“Night will spin names to dust,
Stay until the sun in trust—
If step through silver, give a call or all must fall”

At cliff’s edge, Seina’s shout turns to echo, her shadow flickering as another shape joins at camp. Cliffhanger. Is Seina gone, or is she now changed? Did the mist pull her like all the ones before? Would you risk stepping off the trail if you thought it’d save the only person left? Which voice do you trust: The notebook or the ones still standing by the embers? aicg-9442-img-5-6a3a3bc3bac6d.png
