Hinata Ogawa stood by the dusty track line, hands deep in pockets. He wasn’t new at Akizora High, but the sports clubs felt like a closed circle—a spot he’d given up on cracking months ago. Sighing, Hinata kicked a bottle cap. “Why do I even bother coming early?” he whispered.
Kaito stopped, mouth wide in a quiet laugh. Kaito’s a first-year, smiley, bouncy, covered in grass stains. “Lifting sunrise weights again, senpai? Or is the track your penance now?”
The Sports Clubs Fair
Lunch break hit, and banners went up. Posters, flags, kids shoving sign-up sheets at walls lined with club dreams. Soccer, judo, even shogi had a crowd. Hinata watched. He watched others belong, gathered in noisy pockets.
Ayaka sprinted after him leaving class. She called, “Ogawa! You have long legs! Try the relay trials this week!” “You just want fast hands on batons.” “Is that all it is? You won’t know till you try! Bring Kaito too.”

The Tryouts Begin
Ten eager students standing on worn red rubber, sun in their eyes. The sports teacher, Ms. Nishimura, called for a lap. Sweat and sneakers. Kaito stumbled but caught pace with Hinata. Ayaka’s team zipped ahead but Hinata eased in with her. She passed the baton backwards: “Trust—that’s all a relay needs.” 
Last sprint, Hinata exploded ahead. The baton click was sure in Ayaka’s grip. Ms. Nishimura smiled. Yet whispers ticked in the wind—could Hinata get into finals?
The Outcast Dilemma
Club politics flare when coach names Hinata and Kaito to the main relay with Ayaka. Two veterans roll eyes. Motomu scowls, standing arms-folded behind the rest. “We always give up the anchor slot if someone pulls strings. Trials mean nothing now?” Nearly shouting, Ayaka slapped the bench. “What are you scared of? Fair running means picking the best—let it go. We can use drive more than easy stars.”

When his turn came, screams rose. Half-moan, half-heartbeat of hope. Everything just slowed.
“Go, Hinata!” echoed everywhere. He sprinted. Fatigue pulled his legs, baton slippery—but in the last ten meters, something muscle-deep woke up. Hinata crossed ahead by a finger’s space.
Moment froze. Records showed their time two tenths faster than rivals. Akizora’s relay, for once, was crowd-top.
