Snapshots Between Worlds

Synopsis: Snapshots Between Worlds

The Lunar Institute looks normal: brick walls, tall windows, just a hint of ivy. But peel back even a corner, and things slip into oddness. Akari Tsukishiro, sixteen, starts her second year more alone than she admits. She slides through halls with her hood up and a camera always in pocket. Why? To gather proof—of whispers in shadows, odd tracks in dust, things other students would rather deny. Most brush her off. Even so, she refuses to stop searching. Not until she finds a way to finish a quest started by her older sister before she vanished over a year ago.

Her only friend, Norio, is grounded and blunt, eyebrows sharp and hair cropped short. People mutter about how she used to talk to stones or burned out the science lab by accident. But not even Norio knows the truth Akari clings to in her dreams: she was there the night her sister Yumi vanished, trailing firelight down the east corridor. That firelight haunts Akari’s sleep, urging her to dig into rules no staff at the Institute will ever admit exist.

Why does no one search the east towers between dusk and dawn? Who changes the ink in lost books, and what’s hidden beyond the willow hedge?

Arc One: The Photonegative Mystery

The story begins as Akari snaps pictures under the full April moon. Most are a blur. One photo, though, isn’t. It shows another version of the main courtyard, but painted strange: the flowerbeds all wrong, blue shadows tugging at cracked tiles. That’s proof she can’t ignore.

Norio flattens the picture that morning. “Looks sick? Maybe cursed,” she offers, leaning closer. Norio doesn’t scoff. She has old superstitions from home; anything possible one night might slip into school the next day. Akari thinks, “We’ll see for ourselves. Tonight.”

The day drags. In English class, Akari stares at the clock, missing every word. Three students vanish from roll call, but nobody blinks. Is that normal here? As lunch starts, she spies Mari Ishikawa, all ribbons and perfect calm, guiding a new kid through the hall. Mari’s smile bends too wide. Akari takes note but keeps silent.

Do you wonder how secrets slip through the cracks in old walls?

When the bell rings, Akari retreats to the shadow side of the library, not to read but to chart exits and spy on Mari. She watches teachers come and go, half-looking for Yumi’s lost friends—Utaru and Ms. Saito, last seen arguing by the art room…or so the gossip says. The clock taps steady toward dusk.

Case Study: The East Wing

Midnight comes with silver clouds. Akari creeps to the edge of campus, Norio beside her, bags packed with small flashlights, chalk, and her battered old camera. They wait. The air bends chilly, then silk-smooth.

A figure floats under a broken arch. It’s the girl from Akari’s picture—not blue, but full-color, high-browed, eyes flicking with hunger. Norio whispers, “Yumi?” Akari blinks hard; it’s someone else. Could she have caught a living ghost? The girl looks through her, stares at Norio, then sweeps away up broken stairs Akari never saw before.

Why do the Institute’s missing keep reappearing, always at the oldest doors?

Akari follows, takes shots as she dares, feet steady in old dust. Up on the third floor, behind torn tape and an “under repairs” sign, hoof marks run down the main hall. Norio winces at the marks, points at a set of trailing feathers. They press on. Akari pushes a door, film cocked. Inside: a class in session, but each desk shows a negative image, eyes wide, hands blurred. At the front, Yumi (or what looks like her) smiles, then stretches fingers twice too long. The flash makes her glare. All heads snap up.

Norio hisses, “Akari, run—if you turn your back, you’ll fall the wrong way and wind up stuck here.” Akari stops and lifts her camera, hands steady. Against rules and fear, she asks aloud, “Where did you go the night you left me? And why have you stayed so long on the wrong side of the halls?”

Case files from years before speak of students lost to odd corridors and vanishing stairs. Akari checks old yearbooks. There’s a scattering of unfamiliar faces, their names fading, and all attended the same after-class club Yumi once joined. Her sister seemed unchanged the last day—until her voice slipped two octaves down in sleep.

Expert Insight: Professor Minatsuki

Before dawn, Akari rushes to Professor Minatsuki, old teacher of “Perception Science.” He’s in, though lighting seems wrong behind his door. Sweat beads his neck as he flips an old slide. “Some windows let out; some let in. You can’t always tell which side is right,” he mutters. He slips one page across his desk—feedback on Yumi’s ‘final project’, weird grids matched to missing girl reports.

He never asks why Akari cares enough to notice, or why her nails are black from last night’s paint. He does say, “If something wants an audience, it keeps putting on a show. Don’t forget that.”

Akari spends the next afternoon following odd glows in windows, trails marked with shell beads or lemons, always taking pictures, rarely making sense of what she gets. Shadows line up twice, or students forget she exists halfway through her sentences.

Norio keeps close but starts to worry Akari is changing too. If it were your own sibling, would you do the same even if people accused you of nonsense?

Development: Secrets Unwoven

Mari approaches, smiling, acting out of place. “Do you want some help tracing old footsteps? Or will you keep piecing it all alone?” Her eyes flash green, just for a second. It’s a dare and a warning. Does she know Akari isn’t just chasing ghosts? During music period, Akari receives a soft push from Linda, the new British exchange student, who insists her dog keeps barking at empty air every morning out front.

The supporting cast all have motives to hide or help, but most flinch as stories build. Posters go up searching for the three missing students, but nobody expects them back. Akari becomes persona non grata in a growing set of classes. Whispers coil: is she cursing others, or is someone (or something) using her to gather more victims?

Conflict Peak: When the Bells Change

A school-wide alarm cuts through day to night. Something—or someone—has crashed the head office, and half the rumors spill out. Older teachers herd everyone to the indoor theatre, shutters drawn. Akari notices Mari standing with a hand over her own chest, almost solemn. There’s no cell signal in the old halls; Norio’s charger fails. The courtyard outside flickers, shapes skating over glass. Akari slips through staff bathrooms, making her way back to the photo room—to develop new shots from this haunting night.

She realizes every odd image lines up by date and moon cycle—not just here, but in the underground lake below south tower, and a ruined gate now marked CLOSED, forever since Yumi was lost. Her hands tremble as she loads one print, sees herself and Norio reflected—only in negative, with eyes burning silver. That’s the flashpoint.

Cliffhanger: What Lurks behind Doors

Whispers get loud enough to shake dust from the roof. Through flickering windows, Akari locks eyes with Yumi’s twin—and then blackness. Lights die. Doors groan. Bells ring backwards. Norio yells for her, dragging at her arm, bursting down a damp, spiral stair not found on any map. Below is the shuffling, shrieking class seen only through negatives. Each steps closer, pleading for homework, eyes cupped in too-long hands.

Will Akari be claimed, or can she bring anyone lost back to this side before dawn bleaches the colors once and for all? Is it just another school night, or the last?
