Break the Full Court: The Shinjuku Slam
Break the Full Court: The Shinjuku Slam
Nightfalls over Shinjuku High’s old gym, faded green lines under harsh lamps. Kaito Fuji, a second-year known for guts over show, races up faded stairs just as Coach Hoshino locks up. He gasps: “Wait, just one more hour. I’ve got to get my shot right for Friday.”
Coach sighs, tossing him the ball with a lazy smile. “Just don’t burn out before the City Qualifier.” She watches him miss the rim twice, then finds net on the third. On the wall, posters list teams the Lions beat—all names crossed out except Saitama South. Talk about pressure. Who hasn’t wanted to shine under lights only to choke last second?
Next day, team buzzes over new uniforms. Hotaru grins at Kaito: “Maybe these new digs come with a win streak!” Akio, point guard since first year, shadows Coach through fast drills. Kaito hangs at the baseline, lost till Hotaru elbows him. “You nervous? Nothing you haven’t seen—it’s just basketball.” Some things you keep to yourself. Shinjuku hasn’t made it past semis since 2014.
Last practice. Akio corners Kaito: “Try my new pass. It’s crazy, trust me.” Kaito watches the ball blur by. They wipe damp hands on shorts. Can anyone really predict how a pass will bounce or a crowd will roar at just the right (or wrong) second?
Match day crowd feels twice as big halfway through warmups. Second-years watch from the bench, eyes wide at banners. Shinjuku red and Saitama gold—rivals since grade school, dreams born on half courts after school. “Nerves?” Hotaru whispers, clutching her water bottle so hard it squeaks.
Game kicks off wild. Saitama dominates off tip, sinking shots from corners. Coach yells: “No more easy buckets!” Shinjuku fights for every rebound. Halftime, they’re down 41–27. Locker huddle’s quiet until Akio cracks, “Last shot, trust me, we’ll get them.” Kaito’s voice quakes: “We got each other—that’s full court.”
Final stretch, Kaito’s guarding Saitama’s Ace, Nomura. Nomura tries him with a quick spin, but Kaito refuses to let up. Each play is a grind; sneakers squeak, palms burn as the lead slips to just five points. Do you know that moment when everything slows as the clock counts under a minute? Where would you look—at the ball or at your friends counting on you?
With twenty seconds, Akio steals at midcourt, whips it—no look—behind him. The ball pulses in Kaito’s hands. “Shoot!” roars Hotaru, voice ragged. Kaito pulls for three, time slows. The arc is true, rattles the net. Tie game. Roar shakes rafters.
Seven seconds. Saitama possession, Nomura cuts baseline. Kaito tracks, gets an outstretched hand in, ball pops loose, referee’s whistle silent. Kaito sprints. He dives, skids, comes up with the ball, busted lip forgotten. There’s no time for glory, only movement.
Coach’s last game order repeats in his head: trust the team. He fakes the shot, drives, eyes scanning for Akio. But Akio’s trapped. Rest of Shinjuku fans rise, silent plea pounding the gym. Two, one…Hotaru is open, hands up. Would you make the pass, knowing nothing’s set in stone?
Kaito rifles the ball under Saitama’s reach to Hotaru beyond arc. Hotaru jumps, releases. Buzzer. Freeze-frame as lights burst, the ball hanging, everyone holding breath. To be continued…
