Episode Arc: Terra Venture Society: Star Grass Expedition

Zenzen Ariho rarely knew quiet nights. Team captain at only fifteen, she took that weight as just part of growing up. Being chosen the youngest leader of Gild’s Terra Venture Society? Good luck sleeping after that. Still, Ariho loved a problem, especially if it meant leaving dusty decks and shut doors behind.

Her dream? It’s dirt simple. She wants to find the fabled Star Grass that blooms only every ten years deep in Gorm Vale. That’s how her team—sly dog Nuit, wise-finger Farro, jittery but loyal Tine—ended up with old maps, tea flasks, and stubborn boots. ‘We’re not coming back with half-moons under our eyes, are we?’ Farro joked before they left at dawn. Zenzen shot him her best don’t-jinx-this glint. Tine gripped his walking stick, his lips moving in silent hope.

Nuit, tricky with words when he wanted to be, sidled to Ariho as sun slid up, splashing orange between sparse pines. ‘You know this legend’s a coin toss, right?’ She grinned. ‘All real things once sounded fake.’

Why seek an old plant? The city prized Tiny fragments of rare bloom; they could power guidance orbs, repair soul-locked wood, bring a festival of bright for a dark winter. Ariho’s parents still had a bit, pressed in a tumble glass. It had lit her room for years until its last glow vanished as she left for the Explorer’s building. No one expected the Arc’s records on the ‘star bloom’ to hold up. But if no one hunts, how will you know?

Their march through splintered birch went fine for hours. Then they met a deep, low rift where odd blue light germinated from below. Farro argued it was a trap—fungus lamp, not flower gold. Ariho disagreed but nodded, checking notes. Nuit hopped down first. ‘Scaredy-cats, come on. It’s only light.’

Gorm Vale had a never-dull reputation. Noise hushed weird when you set foot inside. Even the mud there dried fast, dust in your mouth if you laughed at the wrong moment. The team searched shadows for signs: four-lobed leaves, telltale smell of iron and sugar. Nuit led by smell; Tine, by luck, now on his knees praying whisper-words to ‘old roots and small gods.’

They followed the stream. Bugs gleamed green on its side. Ariho thought of her mother stringing tiny beads, waiting for rarer colors. They stopped to rest near slate rocks, and studied strange grooves. ‘These are too neat for animal paths.’ Tine scrunched up his face. Then they saw marks—someone, maybe a past team, set cairns leading right under a clear arch of split wood. Nuit lifted his glove, catching the air. Old, biting cold.

‘Looks like we’re not the only fools chasing light,’ Nuit whispered.

What do you think? Would you follow marks that someone else leaves, or clear your own path? Does trust belong in old woods?

Sudden noise. Something shifting near. Farro dropped low, a hand to stone. A stifled grunt. Out stepped a rival Explorer team, wearing odd flashes of gold at necks. Led by violet-haired Vaestra Kuu, infamous for brash tricks. She twirled a laser pointer coolly, light stabbing around. Already, Ariho tensed. She remembered Vaestra’s raid last spring—a relay trap, two-team finish gone brittle. Vaestra smiled. ‘Lose yourselves, Ariho. We want that flower too.’

Lines drawn by word and gap. Should they fight now, or play trail games through dawn shadows?

Yet, the rift floor’s mystery beats game scores. Smells turned sharp. Crickets stilled. Ariho and Vaestra stared, silent deal forming. ‘If we share the find, we split credits at the Council.’ Vaestra winked but didn’t agree.

The joint search took holes. Traps, bitters, hidden caches, codes borrowed off old guide lores: every step a balance of risk and hurry. Farro tried arguing tactics with Kuu’s crew but got side-eyed. Tine, side by side with one shy competitor named Pell, found a path yawning toward the roots of a huge star-warped pine. Ariho’s pulse matched each crunching root below her feet.

Effects kicked in. Starting with sleeplessness—the deeper they walked, the less edge to reckoning. Ariho tried tracing time with her mom’s watch, but its glass misted over. Nuit scribbled lines in red crayon to keep everyone sharp. Vaestra chewed kess nuts, feigning smug. Night or day meant zip. Minutes spun wild.

Near what the old scroll called Midnight Dell, Ariho knelt. ‘Light—over that root-dip!’

Pell gasped. ‘That can’t be it. It’s living, not rooted. Moving.’

Nuit moved first—silent, quick as wind—and froze. Paused where soft blue flares hovered just over soil. The Star Grass? No. A barricade, fine cilia wafting. It writhed if they got too near. Glowing traps—a warning?

‘Not what we came for, but still weird,’ said Farro. He spun on his toes, then ducked quiet.

The path now dived, darker and colder. Glassy frost lined boughs, and even the air thickened—time simply snapped, zig-zagged. Tine whimpered, nearly every fear on show. But Ariho saw ahead: in neat focus, a patch forked with steady, impossible blue light. There, two leaves shone, petals tight, thrumming slow.

Screaming roots crashed from the next shelf up. Vaestra’s group, eager for loot, ran and yanked a sprig. The ground broke, sound doubled—the vale gave a growling retch, floor crumbling. Ariho charged with her team toward safety, heart hammering raw.

‘Leave the sprig!’ Ariho barked. Kuu laughed. ‘History cares for finders!’

The brink between help and rivalry grinds hard. Do you call mercy mid-break? Nuit readied a gel flare. Farro pressed Ariho, ‘We leave? Or lose our only chance at a piece of real legend?’

The air hissed, rift gave in—dust, light, breath yanked—a fall that felt like days.

Nuit managed one last shout as dark rushed wide. Sleep claimed everyone. Time felt smaller than a sigh.

The cliffhanger interrupts: lying in a strange blue-lit tunnel, Ariho wakes to find herself alone. Tine? Nuit? Farro? They’ve vanished—no footfalls, no warmth, only the faint whisper of petals open a few steps ahead.

Who will Ariho trust—the root mysteries, a lying rival, or something in wild memory—and find her crew, heal the rift, or claim a legend that could save the city light? Echoes answer nothing yet. Next episode: Who hunts whom in Gorm Vale’s dark heart?
