Seito Tanaka, a driven high school sophomore, isn’t like everyone else at Shinonome Academy. His dream’s not fame or glory, but hitting the top ranking at the National Science Challenge. Experimenting isn’t new for Seito—it’s his daily routine in class and at home. When Head Teacher Amano posts a note about a school-wide contest, the science club all but sprints to their meeting room.
“It’s gotta be robotics!” Saya blurts, slamming down a notebook so hard everyone groans. Makoto’s voice is softer, as always. “Shouldn’t we test something new this year?” Debate goes for half an hour before Seito raises his own idea. “Why guess? Let’s use random chance! Leave the whole thing to probability.” Nobody laughs. Saya puts her pen down and leans forward, amused but interested. Did you ever try something totally random when the stakes were high?
Turns out, the experiment’s simple: wire up a maze, tease a small robot through different paths, but let dice decide its choices at every branch. Makoto crunches the data, listing odds for every turn. Saya wires the sensors while Seito checks the randomizer code. Data weeks begin. The maze and robot earn names, mostly thanks to innocence and two late-evening convenience-store snack runs—Riko the Robot, she’s now part mascot, part lab rat. 
But the tests start weird. On day one, Riko gets stuck in the third junction, a dead end the dice just love to pick. Next ten runs, almost the same story. Seito stares at the log. “If chance should rule,” he says, rubbing his eyes, “why’s this so… stuck?” Saya digs out old notes on previous trials and starts comparing. To her surprise, a clear bias keeps showing up right before midnight. Is it program luck or is their code glitched?
Frustration sets in. Pieces get swapped out. Makoto throws his soda can at the recycling twice, hitting only on the third attempt. Saya sighs, then asks, “Shouldn’t we check every wire again? We’re assuming this system’s honest.” Seito doesn’t answer, head buried in syntax errors and odds math. By week’s end, tensions mount—the random route isn’t random at all, with repeated clogs each evening like clockwork.
Pushing nerves, Seito flips a switch for real-world dice throws, to watch for tech bias versus hand luck. First off, results flip upside down. “Now this’s random,” he grins. Everyone’s shocked at how even true randomness confounds effort.
It’s one twist then another. At next club session, Riko moves much faster on hand-dice rounds than code ones, baffling all. Saya looks into the code permissions and spots a blocked update. Logging in with admin powers for the first time in weeks, she finds something odd—an update has been waiting to install since the club’s last huge LAN party. “There’s more than luck in play here, Seito,” she teases, voice almost playful. “Maybe we’re not fighting odds. Maybe we’re fighting the club itself.”
The last act’s a blur. As the contest deadline nears, the club races to patch everything, pushing hardware and nerves into the night. Rain slaps against aging windows, machines beep, and somewhere a fusebox hums too hot. 
That evening, Seito and the others test the finished maze-run one final time. “Should we bet on ourselves? Or are we the dice this round?” Makoto asks. Answers aren’t clear—everyone’s tired but smiling. The test starts, data pours in. Riko, now rebooted and rerandomized, flashes through the maze every time. And in the last minute, power blips, casting half the lab into darkness as the robot hits the goal.
A hush. Then laughter breaks out. They realize no experiment says more about control and randomness than this series did for them. The contest result waits for the judges, but their faith in each other is now ironbound. Yet Seito, notebook open, writes a new idea for the next round—a sensor system nobody’s tried, inspired by every mistake and oddity they lived through this month.
Was it luck, skill, or both? Or was it all just chance, stacked by human hands fighting the system… and each other? The next morning, someone knocks on the club’s door. The head teacher has a note and there’s something serious in her smile. Cliffhanger? Seito’s hand hovers over the switch, eyes wide, and the door creaks open as the episode snaps to black.
