Labyrinths of Reminiscence

Yuta Shinohara used to hate his sleep, but now it’s starting to fill him with dread. Since moving into the old dorm in Ishiyama, strange spots in his mind have begun to cast long shadows. Every night, he wakes with a sharp gasp and a joke half on his tongue. Most mornings, his only friend Emi finds him standing at the window or talking to the frayed remains of sleep.

“Does it hurt you?” Emi asks him as they pour water over dry instant noodles. Soft tap of a spoon. It’s seven. You can almost feel the sunrise trying to poke holes through Yuta’s thick drapes.

They say memories don’t leave. What do you think? Can your mind lie to you? Can you trust your own head to be on your side?

Emi brings up the oddest thing: a news clip found buried in the library’s computer cache. Crian’s Disappearance—One Year Unsolved. She slides a tattered photo across the table, where a fading smile meets Yuta’s eyes. The face means nothing, right? But here’s the thing: Yuta dreams of a voice saying, “I’ll still be waiting over the bridge.” He can’t stop shaking, and he hasn’t crossed any bridges in years.

After lectures they all meet—Emi, Keigo, monk-calm Fuyu, scrappy Nao. The more Yuta dodges, the thirstier they grow for what haunts him at night. Fuyu always talks about mind palaces, about how people make wrong turns inside themselves. But nobody laughs now, not when the electric bell in the lost wing of the dorm keeps ringing at 3:19 a.m., then shorting out Yuta’s alarm.

There’s fog every morning on the quad. Campus staff tape yellow lines across a hall in B wing. They say mold, not to worry. But a stack of student complaints—yelling through the pipes, old nicks on the backs of the house mirrors—go missing from midnight records. Why weren’t these in the welcome pack, he jokes. People whisper about a listless girl who stayed in room 210, until one day only her shoes were left on the windowsill.

Dreams bleed further into day. Most people would run, or call the landlord, or sleep in someone else’s bed for luck. But Yuta goes the other way. He locks the latch to see if it sounds like claws scratching. One time Emi catches him tracing the shape of a mouth on the wall paint, then swearing he’d seen a tear slip down. aicg-2270-img-2-6a1b46b0ba398.png

Night after night—the echoing tune from some child’s toy, water pooling at the power sockets, Yuta stepping out then flinching, sure he wasn’t alone. Nao tries to joke, “It’s your retro TV, not a ghost.” Funny, except later Fuyu finds all the power knobs stuck turned to the right. Electrics that shouldn’t work do. Lives that should be gone linger.

One afternoon, their room is freezing, though sun’s streaming straight in. Emi looks for her phone but can’t find it—she forces Yuta, hands over his ears, to remember him and Crian ever meeting. There’s a half-missing year Yuta just can’t look at, yet pockets of memory pull at him. A party, but he’s got wounds on his palm; faces contorted, sharp as angles. People count seconds. He hears counting in that long gray corridor every time he walks it in his head. Has he left himself a clue?

Out in the back gardens, Keigo snaps close-up photos of the trees beside the path—they hold rope marks, the rope’s long gone. He catches shadows. Nao finds a paperbird stuck in the gutter, numbered wings, torn with sunlight, when opened is a riddle: “YOUR EYES ARE CLOSED, BUT YOUR EARS ALWAYS LISTEN.” Inches from it, the wind picks up. Doesn’t that sound less like wind and more like breathing?

The group holds a vigil, hunting short circuits and following cables back to a switch panel coded with old initials. No answers. Instead, someone pipes in laughter through a dot of their phones: turned up loud, it shakes loose a fragment in Yuta’s mind—rain, the hiss of his heels on the tiled roof, a promise to never let go. His stomach flips. Before dawn, Emi and Yuta sneak into that taped-off hall, holding old audio tapes from the student club. More than one set of crying is caught—his? Crian’s? Or someone who liked to drag their fingernails down glass?

An hour after, something cracks in the dorm—it sounds a lot like a chair tipping, or maybe a heavy sigh followed by small feet shuffling to the steps. Is it good to press on when your insides tell you to run? Yuta asks, but mostly to himself.

This is as close as they ever come to learning the price of memory: half-truths left to rot, voices pressed like hands on bedroom windows. Sometimes you look in a mirror, and someone else blinks slowly. Sometimes, as the freezer light flares and the bulb breaks, there’s a picture from an old yearbook taped under the top bunk, notes in the sleeve you don’t recall writing: “WAKE UP. WAKE UP. 3:19.”

Cliffhanger: Yuta wakes, not really in bed, and finds the lost dorm room’s door wide open. The cold air drifts out. On his hand—a fresh bandage. He wonders who dressed it.

Crian’s voice, or maybe his own, trails down the marble steps: “You kept your eyes closed too long, Yuta. Are you awake now?”
