Ace of the Unknown Court: The Summer Unseeded

Ren Yamada never had the look of a hero. He stood short compared to some rivals, neck always hidden by a threadbare scarf. Yet at Hikawa High, the tennis club knew he was fast, always first on the courts each morning, knocking balls as the sunrise touched the net. No one called him a prodigy—in truth, barely anyone paid him mind since he’d washed out of regional last year.

But things never stay still, do they? This week, Regionals loomed again, and the coach taped a sign-up list to the poster wall by the canteen. Ren swaggered up, grinning at Natsuki—his lifelong friend and bronze medallist from before. “Your name’s going under mine!” he laughed, only half-joking, chest puffed up like a proud tomcat.

Natsuki shot him one eyebrow. “Serious this time, Ren? Gonna make it past the second round, or you just here for those match cupcakes again?” The others—Taiki, irreverent and wild; Ayumi, tactical, phone always up for notes—laughed. But Ren held her gaze longer than usual. “I’ll show you something new. Promise,” he said. That stuck with her.

Practice changed. Ren’s game was wild on the surface: fast footwork, sudden spins, baseline charges. But shielded by a bandaged wrist, slow-motion footage caught him grimacing at tough angles. Night fell as they drilled, autumn cicadas overhead. Whole teams in the Kanto block chattered online—only the club sponsors noticed Ren’s stats humming steadily better, all unseeded. What does it really mean to be overlooked? Can getting ignored help you win, or drags you down?

On the way home, Ren sat in a soba shop. He texted someone mysterious on an old flip phone: [Don’t wait for me. I’d rather fail on my own feet.] That person’s credentials flashed: Hisui Akahane, ex-national player retired at 18, club’s odd “advisor.” When Ren came back late next day to the gym, Hisui met his eyes through the glass. “Nice of you to stop hiding your injury, kid. People want raw power, but you—ever seen a fox outrun a dog?”

That stuck. Hisui ran triple sessions with him, showing grip and feint changes. Ayumi recorded splits; Taiki badgered him with fresh serves. But there was more, always unsaid—press clippings on Hisui’s national collapse, the lingering legacy Sams teach quiet learners. Champions can fail. What does it cost to wanna stand up again?

Regionals lit the gym neon-bright two days later. Bands, flags, flocks of texting students took videos at every failed drop shot. Ren checked brackets and found Natsuki on the far side, guaranteed to only meet…in finals.

You feel something here? The matchup no one bets on—the hurt friend, old coach, school pride on shaky ground.

Every round, Ren shocked each new seed. The commentator raised her script—who is this kid sliding for junk balls and landing right at tough angles? aicg-2413-img-2-6a1bf511be9ad.png

Matches burned fast. Crowd murmured as seeds toppled. Ren wove past a bulky lefty, scampered under lobs against a local pride player whose father’s banner draped two rows of seats. Hikawa High started singing Ren’s name after lunch. Natsuki, warming up on court ten, scowled. Taiki banged on the alcove “YOU’D BETTER WIN IF I’VE BEEN LOSING MY VOICE HLAF A DAY!”

Between sets, Ayumi slid up. “Nice playing chicken with everyone, but you keep letting that wristguard slacken. One more fast landing…”

But Ren shook her off after taping up. Told her, “Not the wrist, Ayumi— I’m after something else.” In the zone, he could see a path ahead. Serve, drop, lob, repeat. Trouble is, the body buckles when pride runs this high all day.

Finals started after dusk. School lights bathed the green hardcourt in orange. Natsuki squared up under banners from two whole blocks away, drawing gasps with every warm-up ball. Ren inhaled and stretched; Hisui gave him the smallest nod. Was this really just a club match?

Natsuki broke early, taking two games fast—a line call: “Outside!” Ren barely argued, shook it off. Their rallies grew longer. At 6-5, match point loomed, but heavy chills slid down Ren’s left arm. Bleachers held their breath. Natsuki shot her famous backhanded return. Ren lunged without checking his tape… aicg-2413-img-3-6a1bf54ac3270.png

WHAM—the ball dropped in, fast net brush. Husk. Natsuki called time, inspecting his bandage herself. “Stubborn fox. Match or no match, that arm craps out and you miss summer run.” Her voice trembled, soft.

Coaches debated. Spectators chattered. Quote later spread online: [Do you fight for self-worth, or bow out to try again?] Cuts and ad-breaks vanished. Cloud shadows raced over the courts. In the last rallies, Natsuki loosened—her returns grew wild, deep spin to force mistakes. Ren, tired but running on nerves, landed cross-courts he’d only ever dreamed of. She overreached—smash out. “AD IN—YAMADA!” the official cry. aicg-2413-img-4-6a1bf5878355d.png

Ren checked Hisui, then Ayumi by the gate. Everyone from rival schools—even the back row—leaned forward. Would you root for him, too, right now?

As they switched for the final point, Natsuki steadied: “Show me what you’re playing for, if not just another trophy.” Ren glanced at the stands—a parent in a faded jacket clenched a hand on the rail. He fixated on a simple idea: Move. Try. Exist.

Natsuki served; game jolted, hearts sync like they always have. Cut to faces: Hisui tears streaming, old rivals with pens poised, principal wide-eyed. Sweat fell off Ren’s chin. The ball came up and–cut to black. Score unknown. aicg-2413-img-5-6a1bf5c2bf4d7.png

End of episode. Do you think he took the final shot, or kept his promise to his friend? What does winning mean if you risk it all to get there?
