Stardiver’s Promise

Stardiver’s Promise (Space Adventures Saga arc)

Toshi’s hands shook around the cold harness. The suit chafed. Out there, nebula thunder pressed hard against the little glass canopy. If he blinked, he kept seeing the Core looters tearing into his home town.

His reasons kept him up: he had to find his older sister, lost last cycle in the ghost sector. He couldn’t leave Jin, either, who hadn’t spoken for days except when triggered by circuits about their dad, gone with the last trade caravan two moons ago. There’s often grief hanging heavier than vacuum in Federation ships, isn’t there?

Toshi’s mentor, called Guin, spent each night at navigation. Half his face replaced by steel after the Cargo War. “Kid, if you want freedom, promise me you’ll trust nothing in this void—not faith, not scanners. Only what you see quiet in here.” Tapping his heart, he grinned. “Simple as that.”

Every sector had stories stuck to portals—star-jen in blue cloaks, old flags ignored, pirates who passed themselves off as lost scouts. Once out from dock, space fight was routine. You learn how quick your shield holds. They met their first drifting station there, entirely hollowed out. Not thrust, just luck. Toshi wanted data from its worn AI chip. Jin begged, “Don’t dig up ghosts.”

Toshi gripped her wrist. Rain softly beading on the console for some trickling reason inside the cracked hull. “If clues are ghosts, I need them, Jin. Or I’ll have no way to fix what happened back home.” You tell yourself some tasks are small, but they never are.

Together, they opened the star gutters. Toshi yanked a data rod loose. The lights flared red, shapes forming fast—bio alarms tipped off. Shadows, slightly too smooth, shimmered on the far wall:

Somewhere, the Federation ship code sounded: distress and cut off. Would you jump into trouble if there’s a chance someone is waiting on the other side? Guin wrapped both his allies tight in his battle coat. “Ready? Step easy—they aren’t living, but nothing like an empty ship likes company.”

Pirates cut in, voice ragged and thin. “Turn over your AI fuel, or we’ll leave your hull for the crows.” Toshi tried to lie. He said, “Navigation core’s dry.” Of course, they didn’t buy it. A twist—Jin’s little drone saved them with a faulty launch. It split by the hatch and gave off wild pulses. For that moment, pirates blinked, vents humming while the rest scattered for whatever old power-cell lay in junk piles.

The crew barely made it out. Engine heat stung Toshi’s skin. You ever felt that pin-prick flash, when resolve cuts into real fear and you think—my luck’s empty this time?

Right before airlock sealed, Jin emerged ghostly pale. “This signal’s hers. Sis was logged as engineer two cycles past—but see these records? She put a lock on maintenance.” They all froze. Was she alive? The logs cut off with an unknown signature, something half human, half scar. Guin’s breath stayed still awhile. He said, “Old stories whisper some keep floating even after their air cycles end.”

The next days, the Stardiver took each tough small gap between blinking stars, power drained. Arguments broke out. Toshi struck a fuse-box with his open glove. “Guin, if this core fails, we can’t chase anyone or find her!” Still, the old man just fixed dinner and said, “Some fights, you feed first. Hunger turns kids savage.”

An old space yard pulsed outside. Junkers circled like fish round driftwood; was it a safe-haven or a snare? Here, the broadcast: last logged heat signature from Toshi’s sister. Voice filtered, thin as old cloth. “Sorry. I had to lock the door before the others finished you.” Did you trust it, hearing a face you’d prayed for years?

The climax snapped bright—Stardiver wove through field hush. All signals cut dark, pirate fake-codes looming on wide-band. Guin’s mechanical palm blocked the blast vent. Jin steered with one shaking hand. White flash, two sentry shards tore portside aft. A tractor beam locked in ascend.

They braced in crew bunks, first time in memory none arguing, only the working clatter of hope. Toshi thumbed the cracked pendant. “She’s really close. I feel it here, now.” His voice small as dust in the night sweep.

Hostile ships dropped cloak, lights green. Beta Pirates dealt terms—crew, keep your side, only want the AI core. Yet Toshi weighed all risk against what he found in that log. Jin whispered, “She left us some road.” And Guin, grinning even through pain, muttered, “We’re Stardivers. All bets start fresh at dark.”

Episode closes on that hush. Jin shaking but brave, Toshi squeezing closed fist round family tags, the glow outside their only lamp. Signal lights flickers. Sister’s warning repeats through broken audio. Did she set the trap or lead them to hope’s box? The line crackles:

Do you believe the lost can guide the living from that deep? Stardiver arcs through black, purpose locked, small as it is. Curtain folds with space wide and loud as breath before fear.
