They hit a hamlet where the Mirror Drake strikes. Buildings shattered, survivors trembling, but one old woman pulls lace from the wreck. “I saw its eyes,” she gasps, “and I saw myself—the fights I lost!” Meerya’s whisper catches: “Do these beasts test us, or are we drawn to beasts to test ourselves?” Ever wondered the same?

The gathered friends stand shocked. Saxon links it, voice thin: “You calmed her fear. Perhaps ending her pain means ending some of your own.” Is recovery so easy? Could it be simple?

Yet not all trust the peace. The cult of Baelred, sensing weakness, attacks that night. Fires circle the hut. Suren rises, hair flared, drake’s scales pressed to his brow. Castor stumbles into the smoke, shouting “I told you! They’ve tricked us—” as arrows fly. A cold howl wakes the hills. The Mirror Drake pauses, wild eyes locked on the flames.

Skirmish lights brutal. Swords clash. Spells snap through shaking windows. Meerya flings a knife—spare and clean. Ikarin, wounded, drags Suren clear; the two drag their fading beast from the cult’s spite, through burning wheat. The edge is thin now between hope and grief.

In the dark they flee to the ruins, but here’s a last cruel snag—Suren counts not one, but two sets of dragon prints heading north. Whispers behind him: “Two dragons. Or two wounds still fresh?” Spattered blood, hope thinning. Is one of them Laeral, after all? Or something worse, shadow spun?

The arc closes on hard cliffhanger. Suren stands above the shattered old vault, voices below screaming his name. Around him the wild hills pulse with dragon heat and the memory of undone grief.
