Shu Asakura lived for quiet evenings under the shadow of Endorm, the Fortress Mountain. Most call him a runaway from the lowlands. He hates that word. For him, this wild valley is the only place left to call home. Rainn, the paper-chewing wyvern cub, trails him everywhere. Rainn acts like a guard but is afraid of crows. Makes you laugh, doesn’t it?
It’s been two years since the last Ashfall. People forgot what that really means. Shu hasn’t. Once, he ran for days to escape the flames, his leg still scars. Goro, the mountain smith, grumbles about old times but sharpens Shu’s axe anyway. “Tomorrow, dry thunder,” Goro says, wrapping a burned hand. “Smells a beast trail.” Do you trust old men’s noses over your own? Maybe you do. I used to.
That morning brings iron smells. Fires eat far peaks, smoke stakes sky, blocking the hunter path. Shu wakes Rainn. They watch together as light creeps over lichen bells. Rainn rumbles, ears flat. Then a shrill screech—something new. Shu worries there’s trouble. What would you do?
Soon there are broken trees, smashed watchposts. Char-black earth. Goro limps up, War-Hammer on shoulder. He says, “Another one’s come. Dragon, big as houses, ivory scales. You’ll never outclimb it.” Shu shakes, lost between awe and fear. They’re scared, both of them, but Rainn sits straighter, old blood waking. She knows that dragon, once lord of the sky. Dragons don’t come alone: always, someone chases.
Shu, Rainn, and Goro circle what should have been a burned farmhouse. Saffron, Goro’s daughter, finds a feather. It stinks of copper, not bird but beast. Saffron has wit and anger sharp as pine. Shu grins, chews some dry bota root. “Let’s track. Could be hurt. Giant or no, lone dragons fall hard.” Saffron shoots back, “Or it leads us into a trap, Asakura! If you die, don’t haunt us.” Goro: “No one dies if we hang loose. Dragons respect hunters—if they know we don’t fear.” How do you show a creature your courage without words? You walk ahead. Simple.
They find the beast by old cliffs. Even broken, it glows. Its wings sweep from red to clear pearl. Shu believes it breathes rain, not fire. It does neither. At Shu’s step, the dragon’s eye fixes him. Shu drops his blade, heart roaring. Saffron, still trailing behind, stares at the shapes moving inside the beast’s wounds. Ants? Or tiny beasts? Goro catches Rainn as she tries to stand between Shu and the wild dragon, shield-bearer without knowing why. Fear is worse at the edge of fighting or knowing peace could crack in one moment. 
The standoff hangs till dusk. Clouds roll pink. The mountain wind dries blood. Finally, the dragon speaks—cracked voice, old words: “Why chase pain? Let the mountain bury what bleeds.” Now it’s Shu’s turn. “Mountain remembers. If you rest, dragon, we all fall. Let me help you. I’m still your kin—although that bond’s faint now.” Do you buy that blood knows blood? Shu does, but Saffron scoffs.
Tension spikes with hungry growls rising up the wind. Down below: the Crimson Prowlers—bear-like beasts with fur aflame and soot-black teeth. Rainn bristles, hackles up. Goro signals all down. The dragon lifts itself, wings like shields, and hisses in warning. The bears don’t care. They close fast, burning, outnumbering even the great beast. They want her ivory scales for their own cave luck, or devil games.
Swords flash, iron bites fur, Rainn leaps—a streak of blue fire cuts across a prowler’s mouth. For a second you might think the small aren’t fierce. Truth? Shu lives in that angry hope. Saffron swings chain hooks, catches a beast’s leg and sends it tumbling into thorns, while Goro’s warhammer booms over rock. One prowler latches its jaws onto the ivory dragon’s wing. Its wounds open wide. More of the ants, or are they little blind mice, pour out.
It’s Shu’s nightmare all again, flames licking just out of reach, feet stuck. He hears the dragon call to him: “Break—the bones. Free the blood.” But what does that mean? Half-blind, he sprints into battle, slamming his axe into glowing scales at the beast’s leg-joint. Scale splits. There’s a rush as air inverts cold and, for a moment, no one moves. Thunder rolls. One bold question keeps ringing: will the dragon die, or live anew? Have you ever gambled lives on trust alone? 
The growing wind peels away burned fur, shows bones, shows answers. As the ivory dragon’s blood hits stone, mountain moss flares up and out, wild green. From wounds, forest animals crawl. Otters, fox kits, birds swarm, filling broken patches. Are these the dragon’s true soul? Shu can’t look away. The Crimson Prowlers scatter, singing some old rune, fear pushing them off cliff edges. Rainn drags Saffron to safety as rock shakes below their feet.
The battle ends, but nothing is the same. The old ivory dragon stands, taller, patched with living wild. Its body—half bone, half fresh root and leaf. Shu’s arm shakes. “You can rest, now.” He stares at the dragon, Rainn, Saffron cut and sweating, Goro’s voice lost in prayer. Dragon bends low. “Flesh made, debt paid.” Storms fill the valley that night. Shu wonders: did he bring back the mountain spirit, or something new and unbound?
The next episode promise is clear: ivory wings disappear into the storm. Night comes quick, too quick, and there’s only one word written atop the hawthorn tree: Ashfall. What’s the cost of hope, after so much death? Will Rainn grow into power, or vanish? I’d wager you want to see where this leads. Don’t you?
