Episode 1: ‘Ashes Beneath Neon Skies’
The city sleeps beneath choking clouds, its neon veins pulsing with a dull blue glow. Ryn stands alone on a shattered roof, eyes fixed on blinking lights from thousands of drone sentries. It’s fourteen summers since The Static Divide split society into ‘Inners’ and ‘Outs’. Ryn is seventeen now, hungry for more than grey mush served through metal doors. Do you ever wonder what the world would look like with hope breathing inside it? There’s none here, not that Ryn’s seen.
By day, she sorts dead scrap for barter credits. At night, she hears broadcasted promises that Inners are making things safer for Outs like her — but the safe zone walls only grow taller. Kaza, one-armed veteran, sneaks her a synth apple and a half-smile, whispers, “You’ve got your mother’s eyes. Use them.” Someone on the salvage line mutters, ‘Nothing changes.’ Their work grates on the soul.
There’s a hum, then pounding footsteps. News spreads: Lights on the East Road, unusual troop movement. Rumor sticks. Mek, Ryn’s childhood friend, finds her on the edge of the old overpass. “You go any closer and they’ll print your face on a warning poster.” His voice shakes. Ryn throws windburned hair back. “Someone has to look out for us. They haven’t seen what you have.” Do you know how to trust when betrayal feels like air you have to breathe every day?
The children of Outs’ slums cling to dream-echoed memories: clean water, safe green fields that never really existed in their lives. Nothing in the ration vaults but seeds that won’t sprout.
A relay comes in. A fissure has split one wall of the Lockdown Belt — far east. The guards ignore it, too busy running down trade runners to patch the breach. Mek shakes his head. “It could be a trap. Or it could be a door…” All night, Ryn can’t sleep. There’s static in her mind, not from the comms, but from inside her.
Kaza asks, “Why try now? System has gotten good at crushing little sparks.” Ryn won’t ignore the chance. “Because people are tired of living like cattle.” Kaza gives her a faint nod. Danger is life for them, after all.
When dawn dulls the sky, Ryn and Mek slip out with scrap sacks to cover their backs, cram their heels into battered hover-shoes. Passing through the market-outskirts, Ryn sees one of the child info traders. The girl tugs her sleeve and hisses the prop numbers: “Four drones moved north. One radio tower flickering. Door might be real.” Mek draws a gear-knife.
Corridors through burned city veins are mapped only by kids who play in dust all day. They ease carefully through glass. Ryn leads. Mek watches like it matters. Sweat tracks her cheek. Once clear of patrol scans, Ryn spots the split fence and the sweep of neon further on. It looks like freedom, but fickle. Whisper-faint.
Just before the break, shadow shapes block the dim path. Two Inner patrols, faceless with visored masks. They scan, looking bored until Mek slips, his hover-shoe clicks stone. One guardswoman aims a stickgun. Mek steps back. Ryn’s rage lances bright:
“Why fence us in while your masters fill their vaults?”
The woman briefs her grip, monotone: “Stay down. Orders keep us safe — all.” Ryn laughs hollow. “Who’s safe here? I’m not. You aren’t either.” The tension rises.
Voices buzz from the guard’s comm. Some system spike. Confusion flickers in her armor’s blue bar. Ryn grabs Mek and dives into shadow. They tumble through rusted debris, scraping elbows, breathing in chemical sharpness. Ron, an aug-man, grabs them as sirens wail. Mek shrieks. Ryn chokes out. He whispers: “Off the road. Now.” They scamper, wound up with fear.
This night, hidden, they see more than they should. On the far end, ‘Blue Court Kids’, teen gangs once allied with the Inners actually mark the breach. There’s talk of mass crossovers planned, a deal with something called The Underlink. Cross the line, you’re erased — chip, history, soul. Some change is coming. There’s electric hope and deep fear mixed like battery acid. Do you run toward it?
Later inside a stinking culvert, Ryn confronts Mek, spitting bits of dust. “You still with me? You ever going to stop doubting?” Mek leans in close, small light stuck on his sleeve blinking. “You think we can make it?” Ryn stares into next-to-nothing. “We have to.” The choice is the only thing they have.
Outside, the city floods in new sirens. Not one wall but two are breached, multiple sectors going dark, crackling in static. Lost children scatter. Hungry crowds press forward. Ryn, Mek, and others look to patch a team — Outlanders and blue-court rebels teamed up, odd as wild dogs and kittens. Kaza’s arm tensing, Ron thumping his steel hand on concrete. Is hope dangerous now? Or, must you dream or simply break apart inside your skin?
On the edge of that shattered city, above a dropoff into lands no Outs’ child remembers, Ryn steps forward. Winds rattle tin-plated signs. Do you move forward when the sky could eat you whole? A draw in her chest strains to peal free. Mek touches her shoulder.
Suddenly the sky splits — not with rain but with neon and gunfire slicing the early morning gloom. Screams echo from the Belt proper. The Inners’ broadcast flickers a single, trembling line: “Control requires sacrifice.” Kaza turns. “Changes everything.” Ron rumbles, “Or destroys all.”
Ryn fixes eyes ahead. For the first time, she isn’t sure her anger will protect her. The city is being torn apart — and this time, maybe she and Mek have a way to punch back. But at what cost?
Before they leap down, Ryn whispers, “What’s the worst thing we might face?” Mek grinds out, “Nothing left to lose.” Their silhouettes vanish into smoke as an inner fire blooms. That smoke carries hope, grit, and something sharper still.
