Year 2052. Like each spring, the grand Serpent Coil Tournament calls up the best young fighters. Ren Amamiya, a lean, street-sharp brawler, slips through the gate, eyes set on the crystal dragon trophy. Can raw grit beat rich schools and big names? Have you rooted for an underdog like this?
Ren trains in high-rise slums, ducked punches since he could walk. Wins come cheap—until this round. His drive? Not glory; he fights so he can buy out his sister’s debt to a trashy syndicate boss. Kana, tall and younger, waits off-stage with hope in both fists. Each kick he throws holds a family promise. “Win. Pay all bills. Free her,” he mutters while taping up before match one.
Ren’s coach, Seven-Fist Ogawa (famous during the ‘32 riots, tooth chipped by a wooden stick), reminds him, “Punch short. Move long. Never answer a crowd with eyebrow jazz.” Ren nods; confidence alone won’t crack cobblestone warriors.
The opening bracket is no stroll. Shoji Hana hurls double feint leaping kicks with shiny school gear almost meant for show, not pain. Ren grins, crouches, trips Hana with grip, nails his palm into Hana’s gut with a muffled grunt. Sound from the crowd? Maybe—he hears only his quick breath.
Yet wins get harder: next, Misako Doi, called “Sleepless Firefly.” Quick hands, and even longer stare. Three rounds go in a daze, but Ren finds the rhythm, faking low and wincing as he blocks her crazy elbow. After it, Doi’s blood on his sleeve. Soma, fashion kids teasing him, quips, “Who styles their hair before a death match?” Instead, another soft cough from the coach: “This is either knife or cut-chop. Did you sleep last night at all?” Ren laughs and peels tape for match three. Left ankle, still sore, 
feels tighter. These doubts get loudest twelve hours in—has he passed his limit?
Mid-bracket, it rains. Opening matches turn gritty. The screen soaks out—viewers now only get harsh-blue event lights. In round nine, Ren faces Kenshiro Myogi. The only undefeated sophomore from Storm Ridge, Myogi bends knees in loose crab form, grabbing for ground. The crowd leans silent.
Grip. Breathe. Trust old lessons: snap out, fold in, don’t let greed fog timing. “My coach thinks you’ve got no snap left,” Myogi whispers at break. “Is he right?”
Ren doesn’t toss back words. With steps that slide instead of stomp, he sets a trap, ankle plants with sharp pain. Counters Myogi’s left with a stuttering high blow. There’s a flash from the win marker. Kana shrieks, mixed with cheers. Some say it looks staged; Ogawa hands Ren an ice pack but covers a smirk.
News hits feeds quick. No fancy schools want Ren in knockouts, but he has one more fight—winner takes all, loser falls to myth. At dinner between days, Kana grabs Ren’s shoulder tight. “We ever eat chicken curry again, or just cup noodles from winners?” Ren grins, fakes cocky: “You ever gonna finish your algebra book?”
The night before finals drags on. Sleek dorm blocks echo sneaker slap as fighters’ trainers drop advice like chatbots stuck on high volume. Ogawa sharpens Ren’s focus over plain rice balls: “Eyes up, chin tucked, dream after.”
The main rival is Aki Konoe. Seven martial arts titles; face turns blank when focused, fast ankles but plays too safe late in match. At opening bell, Konoe bows sharper than anyone that day.

Both brawl, round after round. Konoe’s crane stance holds ground until Ren slips an inside hook, gets a cut over his right brow. Blood trickles, slows sight. Still, he doesn’t wobble, so throws wild jabs while Konoe frowns in focus. The crowd leans forward; the arena air is chilly, pulse jumps. Score even near the last round. Timeout called, Ren on one knee, coach looking grave: “One more, just one.” A torn wrap drops by his shoe. All sweat and breath.
On restart, Konoe tries to fake left. Ren gambles pain against luck, dares a low spin. Feet collide. Time freezes for a breath. Did the underdog fall, or has Konoe missed the beat? Arena camera shifts fast, jury box frozen. We hang right there. 
Just before the verdict, cameras shift to the watching syndicate boss, hidden in an LLC’s VIP booth—nodding, smirking. Kana clenches tiny fists as the count picks up, numbers drawn out. Did the slap echo too much or just enough?
