Episode 7: Cinders on the Forgotten Peak
Tatsuya Okamoto is restless again. That feeling in his chest won’t let up, like a key in the wrong lock. He sits at grandpa Gin’s old table, his notes spread out, looking for clues in old expedition maps and crumbling folklore pages. “You still chasing shadows up there, Tats?” Yui calls from across the kitchen, a half-grin on her lips. He ignores her, tracing the pencil line toward the map’s torn east side. Is the Serpent’s trail still lost up on Ashen Peak, or is it hiding in plain sight?
Last year’s expedition nearly claimed his leg to the frost. This time he plans to bring smarter tools. He puts together a weird little group: Subaru can read runes faster than he can blink, and is obsessed with survival trivia. Yui may not seem like she’d care, but she’s the only one who’s fought off a dire wolf north of Junju Village. And Rintaro? Well, someone has to document whatever mess they find.
They set off at dawn. Each mile, Tatsuya feels that old weight – what if they’re not explorers here? What if they’re the invaded? Halfway up the Peak, frost bites at their skin but they push through—with Tatsuya feeling drawn towards the highest ledge.
The legend goes—the beast sleeps during the gray moon’s week, the only safe time. But it’s only a tail the elders tell, right? Have you heard a story that no one trusts but can’t escape?
Secrets slip out in the snow up there. Yui shares, in a whisper: “My father vanished on this path last year. We have to find more than a legend.” What would you do if the thing you’re chasing was the thing that haunts your best friend?
As fog closes in, Subaru uncovers an old stone slab. A glyph, faded but clear in the cold light—the mark of Kuzen the Serpent. The mountain rumbles faintly. Below, the weak morning sun shines off scales just barely hidden by the frost crust. Did you ever wonder whether myths wake hungrier when you search for them? 
Tatsuya places his palm on the slab. Blood thrums under his skin. Rintaro sketches, his pencil silent in the hush. They all sense something behind them. From the mist, coils of indigo and white shift. Yui draws her dagger. Subaru stumbles, pointing, his voice breaking: “It’s not a monument – it’s a riddle only living hearts can solve!”
And then the mountain shakes hard. Above, eyes as broad as torches open and fix on their group from the clouds. Tatsuya locks eyes with the sky serpent. The next moment, wind explodes, hurling snow and screams. His glove slips from the slab, heat crawling into his wrist. Where does pain stop and memory start?
In that chaos, Tatsuya flashes back—the old story Gin told him, a curse and a plea for mercy. But he’s snapped back by Yui yelling, “Tatsuya, it’s your choice—run, or finish the calling!” He’s trembling as strange symbols scratch across his bare skin, like ancient runes alive.
Just then, Subaru is thrown off his feet, clutching an amulet. Rintaro grabs the camera, snatching a single blurred shot. The giant serpent coils around the peak, closing the party off from the lower trail. There’s no way home now. Will Tatsuya answer the serpent’s riddle? Or perish with the truth? 
He feels the plea stir in his chest again, aching like frostbite. What would you give up to free someone you love?
The camera cuts out on his hand—blood and blue light trembling across his palm. The glyph glows at last, and all fades to white.
The episode closes as Grandpa Gin, far below, looks up and whispers: “The price is set. The mountain never forgets.”
