It starts before dawn. There’s wet mist on the old stones outside Kuren Village. Something’s coming. Not just a shift in weather—it’s the kind that chases a heart quick. Hakai, a young ninja with short, dark hair and a white scarf, waits on the rooftop. He’s sixteen, sharp-eyed, still hoping to prove he’s more than the trouble of his past. Kuren told him, “Strength isn’t in how silent you run. It’s why you run.” He remembers those words right now.
The main goal? Find out who is stealing small children from their homes. Every week, right at dusk, a new name vanishes. Parents pray. The old shrine gets new paper wishes. People blame enemies from the north. Hakai doesn’t believe in ghosts—but tonight, fear is thick in the wind. Close to the cliff.” Aya stares. “Why?” she asks. “There’s too many soldiers guarding the rows.” Hakai shakes his head. “The thief thinks of new roads, just like we do. That’s how escape works.” Aya is silent for once.
They split, but not for long. An hour passes, tense as wire. Hakai nearly gives up, knees wet in spring leaves. Sora whips a dart near his head on mistake, and they nearly fight right on the pine roots. It doesn’t come to blows, but laughing later soaks the worry for a short time. This stranger drops a bundle: kids’ shoes, a rice ball bag. “Who are you?” Hakai calls, stake in hand now.
“Are those yours?”
“Ain’t right—my little brother was taken yesterday,” Aya shows teeth, glaring.
But the stranger, Kohane, isn’t shaken. “I’m helping them. You don’t know these woods like I do.” Sora takes a step, glances back. “Help us, then.” But first, the code of trust—Kohane must show something she keeps hidden. It’s an old clan blade missing half a hilt, a sign from a line believed lost. Aya is first to understand. “That symbol’s from Black Mist,” she mutters. “Did your clan survive the purge?”
“I’m the last. And I don’t like spies in my home.” 
The new plan: search the lower cave system. The group—now four—sets off, nerves pulled tight. Aya’s stubborn, but trusts Kohane quicker than she means to. Sora, sharp to signs, spots trails in earth nearing the violet roosting nest, lantern glow revealing boot prints, scratch marks—tiny but fast, as if made by children moving against their will.
“Who would take children but not hurt them?” Hakai asks. None answer; strange as silence can be.
Aya pokes her blade into earth. “There’s too much soft moss for a fight. They came on their own.” Sora wants to signal adults, but Hakai blocks him. “Not yet. Too loud. Let’s be small.”
Far from the peony gate, twilight moves toward rain. The team crawls through bramble arch, entering a shaft below a tree designed to appear rooted but loose. Inside—a dim tunnel, stale with mud and loss. Tiny laughter bounces stone to stone. The group stops, every skin itch alive.
Within the cave, the truth breaks: no cruel enemy at work. The lost children appear. They look fine, their clothes clean, eyes wide in giggles. Kohane kneels. “I told them stories here. That’s why.” A boy explains, “Up there’s fighting, hunger, grown-ups shouting. We’d rather wait in the cool.”
The group is split—should they force the children home or try to heal an old wound first? Some things wounds don’t show on skin. Aya looks aside but her hand shakes. Sora starts to speak, stops, then sighs.
At this moment, night thickens. Sound above the tunnel. Clanking blades—and lantern light from above.
Soldiers have caught their trail at last. Now their secret is at risk of becoming an accusation. Hakai glances to the others. “You trust me tonight?”
Kohane nods. Aya’s lips thin out. Sora already raising a wire snare in the earth.
That’s when a shadow covers the door.
A figure in steel mask, blue fire in one eye, points a blade. “You’ve left the safe path. Consequences.”
