Arc of Fallen Sparks: The Element Bound
Keiji once lived a plain life on the edge of Euros city, hidden where morning clouds dripped mist over the roof. Since the accident last year, nothing in his home felt safe. Not the kitchen, not his own hands. Water came when he was sad, slipped up walls, soaked sheets or burst mugs if he startled. His sister, Mana, warned, “We’re running out of towels because of you,” but it was her clumsy grin that hurt most. Has your family looked at you like you were the room and not the welcome?
Classes started with Ranking Day—where unused gifts spark on command or split accidental, all while cold uniforms press skin. Second years watch from bleachers, calling scores like, “Bet Keiji shorts the fuses!” Kyosuke stands a foot apart. “Just stay calm for once,” he whispered before Keiji’s test. Twenty pairs of eyes waited. No one spoke when the air started. Steam turned silver at Keiji’s wrist—right above the angry line that used to be just a scar. His power split for the first time, biting ground and ceiling both, making an older girl clap from the back row. “Does lightning taste like that to you?” she called to him alone.
The faculty split students by what glimmered next: stoneborns off to the field, wind twins pulled up high. Keiji found himself stuck with the ones deemed, “unbound.” No control, no place—half advanced, half almost safe. Mana stuck her neck in during his lunch. “There’s a Sun-Fall coming. Big test at the Ueno lake for the best three elemental sowers,” she warned. Keiji drummed a thumb on his tray. “I can’t decide if I’d drown or burn out there.” She blinked. “Do both?” Even threat didn’t erase that option for her. Supporting cast: Mana (his wit-bright little sister), Kyosuke (courteous, a dry temper but never avoids Keiji); Sora, a tempest girl, immune to wind’s pain; Koji, shadow glass, anxious and smarter than he will say out loud.
During drills, Kyosuke pushed Keiji too far. Tempers rip, wind lifts steel plates. Water curls like rope; electricity in Keiji’s hands tries for air then roots. Kyosuke gritted his teeth. “Why can’t you tie them down? I trust you to ground, not break!” Keiji took a swing. Instead of fire, there was sound—a buzzing snap that left furniture scattered and Kyosuke even farther away. Have your best efforts ever gone wrong in public? 
Sora approaches that night. She likes practice—with wind she can’t make stop. “Do you think it’s better that it hurts us more?” Keiji asks, looking at her hand—dry, no marks. “No. We feel it all. That’s the trick,” she replies. The two watch the stars, two kinds of mistakes between them. Koji says nothing for weeks, only follows.
The Sun-Fall trial tests gifts at dawn, when mists weigh most on the eaves. The field is white, grass wet and crackling. Arc-faculty cities see this as contest and as purge—the last culling for school chosen final team. Mana sits under a big striped umbrella, fist around a phone. Keiji walks slow, chanting quiet things. In the arc-ring Kajin flickers ice: “You won’t beat me this time, drip-boy,” to which Kyosuke mouths a bored curse. Mother used to say, “Water and thunder breed the world’s finest forest,” but Keiji notes his boots are muddy and unsure.
First clash—water ropes fail, snapping up into a spray when Keiji gets tense mid-fight. Kyosuke sweeps with ground churn and pressure wind, spitting his breath. Teachers whisper in corners: “Split affinities, unstable. Without control, is he threat or asset?” Sora steps up, gifts breaking the tide; for a second all formless, rolling fire and damp stare back at Keiji. He tries once more. This time, lightning never asks. It burns so fast the crowd recoils. On the edge—Mana cries. The lake boils at the rim.
“I did this, Sis? I’m sorry. It’s not—” Mana hugs him before the smoke fades. “One day, you’ll control it—not fear it.” Have you hoped someone’s belief would make a thing true?
Nothing is resolved; the teachers collect data, some shrug at talent. Koji leaves a simple diagram for Keiji: a field, thunder dashed, water dropped at edges. Hand-script underneath reads, “Overlay, not mix.” Next assignment: pair rounds, but the winner must show one thing no one’s seen before. What’s hidden waits just past this trial. Trailing nerves wrap the ending in static.
The future team to protect the city—winner not named yet, only hinted. Sora speaks low to Kyosuke after the sun sets, “He’s going shock the whole school soon, won’t he?” Kyosuke frowns, staring where Keiji disappeared. Everyone waits as rain falls, rough and hot on iron eaves. Fade to black—Keiji on the rooftops, open palms filling with twin arcs. Will he master both, or break apart?
