Hushed Sessions: The Lost Choir

Summary: Setting the Tone

It starts slow. Thick fog weaves between the tombstones of Yorikawa’s lost quarter. The clock tolls two, but you’re not sure it’s really night. Leaves rot underfoot. A sweet and sour air
chews at the edge of your senses. When was this place last alive?

Main Protagonist: Ren Odagiri dreams about her older sister, gone seven years. If she could speak to the dead, she’d beg for forgiveness. She studies sound at Seiro High. Wants reason for the silence that forgot her family. Ren’s grown thin from lost sleep, and won’t sleep—not until she uncovers the truth.

Key Supporting Characters:

  • Kaito Kondo – older boy, infamous for not fearing what should be feared. Secretly records ghost-voices. Lost his own words after a shrine visit, uses tapes to ‘talk.’
  • Jun Saita – looks weak but keeps logic when others lose it. Skeptic, yet shakes at churchbells. Hopes horror is the echo of physics, not souls.

Premise: There’s an urban legend in their part of town. Songs drift from homes emptied by plague. They say if you record the sound, you join the choir. Ren came for closure.

Opening Scene (1): It’s dusk. Ren and Jun carry simple gear—a battered voice recorder, lint-specked flashlights, windbreakers. Kaito waves them to a vacant stone house near Track 3 (Yorikawa is a maze of faded rails). Someone left red ribbons hanging from the old gate. She almost asks—Are we here, or is this dusk a dream?

Setup: Horror Awakens

Records spin, cool air rushes their feet, doors mutter. Ren dares the first floor, whispering, ‘Satomi… if you’re there.’ Jun counters, too loud: ‘We’re testing room noise propagation. That’s all.’ Everyone feels what they’re not naming.

Just then, something plays back over the speakers—a few plain notes, like a lullaby whistled from inside brick. Scraped, garbled, not quite voice, not quite wind. Kaito scribbles a note: ‘Did you sing this?’ Ren doesn’t answer.

Kaito sprints to the mold-crusted parlor. Floorboards creak in rhythm. The recorder’s tape fizzles and jumps, as though under someone’s finger. Static snaps. Waves get thick. Jun says, ‘Let’s get out until the air is right.’ But Ren shivers: ‘Stay longer. Please.’ Kaito just hums, echoing the broken tune.

Building Tension: Songs that Hurt

Suddenly, the air compresses. Curtains flick, lamps rattle. Grandfather’s clock spits sparks that light faces below for a blink. Those sounds pour in—children singing “Don’t Listen,” adult voices cross, all looping with a near pain.

Ren drops to her knees beneath the loft window. ‘Satomi?’ she murmurs again, so small she could slip through the cracks herself. Instead, she stays. Kaito records every note, labeling as ‘August Lament.’ Jun reviews his spectrum: there’s a shape at 8kHz—likely human, maybe not.

Kaito lifts the recorder and gasps, finger to lips. They all hear now—words from the device, played backwards: ‘Don’t Choir—Don’t Join—.’ It repeats, gaining speed with their heartbeats. Would you choke if an old voice tried making you depend on it?

Curtains lash and a pale hand—missing two fingers—glides free of the ruined piano. Who dares stand? Jun grabs Ren but Kaito peels off alone, tracking a music phrase leaking up the stairs, source unknown.

Descent and Revelation

Should they go? Would you follow Kaito if you’d known what lay up there? Ren doesn’t stop herself. Each step up snaps under her, splinters in bare feet. Jun sticks to her side, maglight bright, jaw tight.

The hall reflects their steps with mirror force. As they near, distant doors to dead children’s rooms yawn wide. From bedroom three, a song floats—a child’s lullaby, layered with what could be Satomi’s voice.

Kaito’s shadow twists, long and stretched. He stands inside the doorframe, head cocked, listening as dozens of unseen mouths chant, ‘Hush-shhhh hush-shhhh, she sleeps now, weave—hush-shhhh’. Beneath, a trapdoor creaks open, smell of iron, rot, dust filling the narrow hall. The song bleeds louder.

The Choir Offers

A chorus hums: ‘Forgive, forget, join.’ Vertical lines cross the floor—old salt, old blood? Ren’s legs put her by the trapdoor though her mind steps away, far. In the dark below: shifting figures, faces eaten by holes where sound pours in and spills out.

Her own voice blurs—the device is now echoing her calls as choral sound, warping her memories. Kaito leans low, saying nothing, eyes shining blue-black with cords of static. Jun, hands shaking, spills: ‘Not physics. We should go.’

The chorus begs, low and real: ‘Ren can heal. Only sing, only listen.’ Confused, Ren takes one step closer.

Questions jab your head now. Would you listen if someone sang your name? Who do you call when that song comes from below the floorboards—someone you miss, lost by your own hand?

Personal Stakes Snap

Bodies convulse at the sound as the music presses hard against their sense of self. Ren screams for her sister, pressing ‘stop’ on the recorder—but it clicks ‘play’ all on its own, sound rolling like water against concrete. Jun covers his ears and sinks HARD to the floor.

The trapdoor starts to shut by itself; muffled voices cry out, demanding fresh blood and song. Kaito fights to drag Ren clear. Lines flicker on his skin—as though he’s becoming music himself. In that instant, Ren faces the hole and hears her lost sister’s laugh ride over the noise.

‘Ren, please… forgive me… ‘Did Satomi cause all this?’ The realization burns through, as shadows drag Jun toward the black.

Cliffhanger

Ren reaches into the dark as her skin starts to hum—the ghosts jostle at her edges. She grabs Jun, pulls until blood wets her hands. The choral line breaks: ‘Let her replace you—let her remember.’

The house shakes apart, wood splitting, a void twisting behind the music. Kaito howls with half-his-voice, half-tape static, reaching for a knob just beyond easy view.

And from below, a slow song climbs, wistful and ruined. Ren can’t tell whose mouth sings now, but tears pour free. She can’t leave. Not yet. Black letters rise behind her, each spelling the same command: HUSH.
