Starlit Fugue: The Nebula Gambit

Episode 14-20 Arc: Starlit Fugue — The Nebula Gambit

Jiro Ren stares out the tiny porthole above his bunk. He ships food, not weapons, yet he drags trouble toward every starport where he docks. It’s not by choice, though that would be easy to say. Do you ever feel watched among a thousand lights? Or sense that your story’s being guided elsewhere, thread by invisible thread?

Jenny clips him behind the ear with a pouch of dried seaweed. “Hey, dreamyhead. Nada and that punk Reek rebuilt half the drive. That nebula’s here ahead of schedule. You coming, or sipping air?” Jiro grins. Jenny could rebuild the whole ship on her own, duct tape and stubbornness holding Sunskimmer together for the next job—or the next fight with Unisec Pirates. Luna struts in behind her, jaw set. They’re magnets for blame but keep flying. Would you trust someone because they punch when words don’t work?

Next day, a red-scarred world looms past Bridge. Signs of barricades, scars from last winter’s piracy. The hush before landing is basic: crackling keys and Nada muttering, “If Customs ask, those crates tick because it’s weather tags.” Luna again, “I cannot fight armed drones with language.”

Onboard Sunkimmer, decks creak as Reek fiddles with his amp array. They’ve got two hours before nebula storms close trade, so they pack quick. Jiro glides over his pilot chair. Jenny leans in, voice low. “That nebula—it glows on audio scans. Nada thinks it carries more spikes, magnetic things. Might shield us from tracking, maybe hide a tail.” You ever want to run into trouble on purpose?

A strange ship tracks Sunskimmer through field echoes, keeping silent. Luna raps on bulkhead, hard. “Did anyone ask for escort?” Nada’s tool-blunted hands clench in reply. Jenny checks the scopes: nothing big, just a ring of charged signals spiraling near. Jiro sees delta-logs flash—a new pattern, like anyone can feel it’s calculated, drop-for-drop through the fold. They decide together: use the nebula for cover, even if the hull cracks from the stress. Too late to run wide. Jenny puts comms on private to shut away the guesses. Thick clouds swallow Sunskimmer’s red wings.

The nebula is hungry. Mag fields twist, showing memory-echoes on the bridge screens. Reek, biting at a new blip: “If something’s close, these sensors lie, but I can make sonar see their wake.” Luna braces at his side. Then a pulse—a reel of coded ping stabs their node. Engines stall. It’s language not meant for this place. Nada says soft, “It’s not an enemy, it’s a call.” They draw together, crowding sensors and guess at answers. Jenny, shrill: “What asks question with ten signatures, in our voice, not theirs?” Reek keys his homebrew wavemod and stares as scrap signals bloom into the unknown.

Alien spectra paint the deck. Jiro’s breath is short, but his hands move. He smooths comm static into a pattern—kindness or trap, he can’t care now. The voices behind the ping spiral with Sunskimmer until cresting quiet washes over everything. Suddenly, Luna’s wristcom speaks a string of place-numbers. She decodes a station, old registry marks, hidden. Jenny figures that’s beacon talk. What might a broken ship in cursed clouds be carrying that even pirates avoid?

They slip closer, edge on to shield their vital boards. Odd peace here—not hunting-collapse, but slow, almost welcome calm. Luna takes helm and bursts, voice stunning each of her crewmates, “We copy. Come through, whoever you are.” The answer is layers, an old captain half-eaten by code echo, asking for help in drift when no sun shines. A trapped ghost, maybe. The nebula guts their instruments, but Jenny guides Sunskimmer. Sweat soaks them all; if the hold stays cold much longer, everything edible will freeze chain.

Time cuts thin. The pirate echoes ring outside, still patient in nebula swells. Crew debates every turn. Jiro admits, “I’d rather eat raw alg paste than see Reek poking through haunted metal, but we can’t leave even ledger-men to vapor.” Jenny scowls but nods. “Solo ships draw out answers. This time? We’re the answer.” They kit up, masks and magboots ready, flashlights grouchy on sparks. The last hull hatch groans; Luna leads, Reek humming bad theme music behind her.

The ghost ship, fractured, interior deck walls patched by hands or tendrils. Jenny halts, pulls the comms wide. At center coil lies a figure, the old captain but waking, voice as lost as old tape: “You heard, you found, now we must cross together.” Luna replies, crisp: “What’s in tow?” A beat. In a flicker, the captain points weakly at deep, shielded crates, a simple wry grin on what’s left of his face. “Not treasure. Seeds — blue, like old Ganymede springs. Plant them or lose home to static.”

It’s old myth in real space: blue seeds for oxygen and food back on battered rocks. Crew glances at one another, nodding slow. Thesis of hope twisted into a game of scarce luck. You ever brought cargo too heavy for just your ship, yet too vital to risk alone?

Reek hums while tracing hull lines, disengaging locks. Jenny fidgets, planning: split rescue or cut loss? Pirates still circle silent, waiting.

Nada cues a timed fuse—blinding the drifting field with solar foam, gives the Sunskimmer a quick route out. They transfer the crates with tiny tethers. In the storm, voices start to cut away again. Jiro locks eyes with the ghost captain. “Ever see light rise twice in same year?” No answer, just a slow, knowing wink. Luna signals ready, and all bolt through a brief window, ghost ship lost in swirling clouds.

The Sunskimmer burns out to blue dark. Pirates pull at weak sensor beams, slowed by energy bursts left behind. Crew checks the seeds. Inside, nothing but slightly glowing blue pods, still faintly pulsing in time with Sunskimmer’s drive.

As storm-creases clear, a warning lights up bridge glass, words in half-forgotten glyphs. “Trade, or seed-turning ends. Watch for echoes.” Jiro stares. Are they tools, or just the next page of a war scrawled by old travelers and forgotten in each nebula?

Jenny breaks span with a wild jab at the comm. “Anyone listening, plot us to home. Next round’s on Reek.” Crew only grins, drained. Yet looming in harsh star gaze, fresh echo reeds want fixing. What pond will those blue seeds turn green—or are hungry ghosts following too?

You’ve watched a group clutch at hope in mute gasways and prank warlords for time to flee. But what would you risk, if every patch of ground ahead promised both growth and tracking? When it’s more than scavenger luck, will Jiro’s kindness doom him, or raise the crew to lead lost out of dark, one old map at a time?
