Shards in the Skyline: The Kanetomi Files

Kaito Murase hated being late. Even now, his shoes smacked hard on midnight crosswalks, coat tails chasing him. Did it matter if sleep mocked him? He never found rest when murder hovered over Aogawa’s streets. Not when sharp-edged riddles called his name.

He wasn’t alone. Yui, smart and fast, kept step beside him. She’d spent the early hours scouring chat boards for whispers. “Got anything?” he huffed without looking up. She jerked her chin. “The Raven left a message.” Her voice dropped: “He means for us to see it tonight.” The air prickled with tension, each streetlight throwing long, honest shadows. Yui tipped her phone forward. Kaito saw it: a picture of glass scattered across alley bricks. Hint or warning?

Nobody moved when Kaito and Yui reached the taped alley. Inspector Suda scowled, his hands on hips. “We shouldn’t be doing this in public,” he growled. But his eyes sought their advice, not just his usual scorn. City’s best always quarreled. Three years in murder. Three years left without clear sleep. Odd how you get used to days this color—thin neon, tape-curled, silent for a breath.
Sharp lines everywhere—broken, glinting, threatening. At the alley’s edge: shards twisted in the shape of a kanji. ‘Blame,’ Yui whispered after one look. Suda grunted. “It fits the pattern.” He wasn’t sure if he meant the murder or the word.

Blood darkened half the cement near the glass. Another call sign from the one they dubbed The Raven. Always poetic. Always savage. Do you think you’d spot a pattern where he hid clues? Kaito crouched, light flashing across his lenses. Was this one of those nights where the city itself was the culprit? Most thought so—but not him. “Notice how the shards curve at the edges?” he said. Cold breeze, tension in every word. Because last week’s message bent the other way. The Raven had changed more than his tip-off routine; he got bolder.

Kaito fingered the smallest shard with a gloved hand. Behind him, Yui moved quieter than cold air. She bent low: “See that stain? It’s not just blood.” Kaito pointed. “Cleaner mixed in. Not a pro. They rushed the scene—or wanted us to think so.” Want me to go with my gut here? It’s bad when these things start getting staged.

Back at HQ, glow from the big screen hurt Kaito’s crusted eyes. Patterns screamed from strings of linked files: time, marks, phone chats, all of it. Tsukiko, polite but fire-willed, folded her arms as patterns blinked behind her: “Kaito, there was a call tonight—modulated. They meant for us to chase this.” Yui shook her head. “Cheap taunt or coded? Can we allow him to control our pace?” She spat out the words fast, trying to twist the mood away from defeat.

Breaks between scenes came tight now. In dim hallways, Kaito stared as texts scrolled by. He used to love crime shows as a kid. Lately, all drama vanished for real fatigue. Big crimes don’t bring closure—just new, ugly links each night. Has a case ever kept you up like that? Would you trust your mind if details started ringing own rhythms inside it?

Now a new call; phone hung open. Masked voice: “Numbers spell the night. Remember, glass never shows its mess at once. Let the skyline cut you clean.” Static drowned the rest. Suda, fed up, clocked the time: 2 a.m. That’s when most people should be safe in bed. But safe was rare here. aicg-7194-img-3-6a30d3a32a295.png

Morning splinters bled orange. Kaito, relentless, dug for who was missing, who the pattern touched most. Crack in week-old report. ‘Yoshida Rail’ cited again—and now with code numbers tied to the Raven’s own prank calls. He called the spot. His breath fogged in tight bursts. “Yui, think the next puzzle is the old station closet?” Surprise flickered. “Yes. There’s a lockout. They set it up to drop the next clue only during first light.”

The pair staked out the site, legs cramped, hope flicked dull as gum wrappers crushed underfoot. Someone hovered. Quick feet. Kaito and Yui pounced, grabbed. Then—a slip. Not The Raven. The wrong lead. “Expected us,” Yui snapped. But a single paper bird fell from their suspect’s coat. Another message: scavenger, not creator.

This led deep into digital junkyards. Tsukiko hacked stray cams. Some call it gray-area policing. Kaito didn’t care. They watched a pale shape slip in and out after midnight. Long coat, trash bag, face shadowed on video—flitting, wrong-footed. He moved like he’d grown up under passing trains instead of the open sun. Yui gripped the table; she could sense the chill.

Night bled to rain. Another body, freight yards. Yet this victim wore the same mirrored feather earring as victim one. Linked. Now they hunted not just Genius, but a network. Kaito let out a slow curse. Had they been missing a face in the room all along?

Mid-chase, thunder cracked; city gutters poured hard. Kaito got voicemail: “Skyline crashes next. Hide if you want, Detective, but looking up won’t change what’s coming.” Rain hammered his words. Could he warn Suda? Key files out, one step too slow. Victim three unlikely to survive another hour.

Yui’s eyes shone, defiant. “So, Kaito—going after him before sunrise?” His reply came clipped, harder than ever: “We go now. The Raven won’t get to rewrite these streets.”

Camera pans skyward, rain bouncing off tangled tram cables. Tape flickers in wind. Close credits fly over the outline of a shattered, rising glass blade. The truth? A single voice asks, “You still think sins hide in the dark, Detective?” Episode cuts.
