The Academy That Doesn’t Sleep
Every generation at Amateri Hero Academy, the top five students face the Night Trial. Most kids spend months dreading it. Crow Ishima hears about it one week before the first true challenge starts. He doesn’t sleep well after that. Would you?
Crow always keeps close to the shadows. He hates his name. Hero leagues love flash, but he doesn’t care. What he loves is cleverness—and luck. That’s what he needs most tonight.
The Five Chosen
Crow’s only true friend, Mika Ren, jokes, “Either we win, or they’re gonna stick us in remedial Kirby class again.” Crow laughs, but he’s thinking: Is this a test of hero skills—or of fear?
They won’t know. At 11:37 pm, silent bells echo all over the campus. Crow, Mika, and three others—sumo-arm Tak, posh Iri, and Shrike, who likes to fly up high where teachers can’t see—hurry to the Gold Door. One ranking board lists them “Alpha Team” as the year’s leaders. That’s a heavy load.
The task: Find the teacher’s lost Prism Key, somewhere in the Shrouded Gym, before dawn. “Watch out for mannequins.”
Setup and Unseen Threat
Crow hates breaking rules, but stepping through the Gold Door bends them anyway. Even Iri, who acts brave, shivers in the long hallway. The air is cold and heavy. “Those things in there better be dumber than Tak,” Shrike jokes. Nobody laughs loudly.
They meet two teachers. Night-ward Mage Osoro winks, vanishes into blue dust. Coach Tanaka hands Crow a Slip Map and says, “Not every mannequin you avoid is fake.”
If you got a Slip Map that marks moving shapes but never stays still, how would you feel?
Inside, it’s darker than it should be. Mika keeps close to Crow, whispering a ghost story. They find mannequins blocking stairs, standing like odd guards. Tak suggests he just runs through them all.
All fake, or not? Crow nudges Mika. “Some will grab, or worse. I’ll take caution. I’m not dying for a dumb hero badge tonight.”
Puzzle Room and Split Decisions
The Slip Map shows shapes. Some shift and vanish. Iri reads an odd plaque: “Match hope and fear to pass.” Simple? Not with bloody red paint and one mannequin winking.
Mika stares hard at the figure. “Those teeth… they’re too real.” Crow tests by tossing the Slip Map. A mannequin yanks it up fast. Shock. It’s alive—or someone inside?
Here, Crow uses cleverness. He taunts the mannequin, bouncing voices between gym mirrors. Mika distracts from the side, Tak charges (with a battle yell that’s two pitches too high). Shrike swoops in, ties its arms, and laughs as mannequin dust flies.
After chaos, they find a key, but it’s glass, not silver. Wrong one. Iri stomps. “Classic mislead.” Now, they need to trace mannequin footprints in flour left spilled on the floor—a real teacher detail. Mika giggles, “It looks almost like cake, if you tilt your head.”
Trouble Heats Up
Far end—alarm rings. Teachers’ trick? Over the microphone: “Found your biggest fear yet? Room 12 hides the Prism, if you get past the fear. Use the map if you dare.”
They race to Room 12, but the floors go tilt, hazardous and clever. Mika falls—Crow catches her arm, hard, but bites his lip. Her thanks is a thumbs up.
Inside, shadow mannequins wake. They leap out, blinking red in the pitch black. These aren’t random. They taunt: “Coward there’s the leader…” A chase starts. Iri turns to fight, but panic wins.
Quick decisions. Shrike wants to bolt. Tak wants a fight. Crow backs into the wall. He remembers Coach’s words. “Trust the fakes,” he whispers. “The dangerous ones act real.” He yanks down a glowing sign.
Beneath the Mask, a Choice
Time slows in the panic. Crow dives through a side door, drags Mika too. They land face down on deep velvet. A voice calls out—almost gentle: “Give up? Or risk one more test?” Mika shouts, “We risk it!” without pause.
The Velvet Room shines gold, sprinkled with tiny lights. In the center stands one mannequin, child-sized, holding nothing but a single white key. No threats, just worn eyes.
Crow approaches. “If you’re real, hurt me. If not, show hope.” The mannequin doesn’t move. Crow grabs the white key, turns it. Light bursts.
Cliffhanger: The Dawn Falls Silent
All the shadows freeze. The Slip Map glows, but then cracks. Crow unhooks an envelope from the mannequin’s base. Iri, Tak, and Shrike run up, panting and wild-eyed.
Inside the envelope: a note, “There’s another key. Trust only what couldn’t touch you.” The lights snap off. Something rustles above—from the darkness, eyes blink.
Outside, in the gray dawn, Coaches look up, eyebrows raised. Are they watching true hero growth? Or did they make things much, much worse?
