Ripples of Resolve: The Eight Lane Promise
The summer heat fills the air at Hanasaki High. Classes finish early, birds break into lazy song, and the pool seems more blue than ever. Yuuta Kamihira stands at the edge, goggles loose in his hand, mind far from clear. He’s the ace of the swim team, yet every morning for a month he’s jolted by doubt.
Every year, Hanasaki hosts the regional showdown. Winning here lets you reach town finals. His older brother set the eight-lane record five years back. Pictures hang in the foyer—Yuuta can’t walk in without seeing his rival’s shadow. “A record never fades,” his coach always says with a grin that presses heavy on Yuuta’s narrow shoulders.
His teammates carry their hope like banners. Sanae, with her brash pep, never skips a lap nor a chant. Teko, new and wobbly in the lane, masks nerves with forced glee and tells wild tales about sharks in every sea. On a muggy afternoon, after drills, Teko looks Yuuta in the eyes: “You really think you can?” His own laugh trembles. Yuuta gives the only answer he can: “I have to. If not, who am I?”

The week before regionals, the team’s resolve runs ragged. Sanae twists her ankle just before final drill, wincing away tears but insisting she’ll show up anyway. Teko misses turns, eyes darting between pace and Yuuta’s stiff figure. Small dramas pile. At night, Yuuta listens to footsteps on the tile roof, his brother’s old shoes, or maybe imagined ghosts.
On race day, bleachers fill with cheers that pulse with nerves. Swimmers dress in faded blue suits, lane numbers taped across lean backs. Yuuta warms up, the chaos around him just a blur of splashes and faces. Sanae grips his hand and says nothing.

At the turn, street noise echoes. Someone yells his name. Yuuta finds a new rhythm. He surges ahead—then rivals creep up beside him in lane four. You ever push so hard your limbs stop being yours? That’s how it feels halfway to the finish. But in the blur, Sanae’s laugh is sharper than the pain.
One hand on the final touchpad. Digital times flicker. Jaw clenched, Yuuta waits for the light that means a new winner. His heart skips when he realizes the pool is silent, every cheer snuffed.
The PA crackles: “Kamihira has…tied the record! 49.12 seconds!”
Loud shouts break out, half in disbelief, half pure joy. Sanae bowls into him, already safe tape on her ankle. Teko sobs out main event relief nearby. The moment should feel heavy. But suddenly, losing weight, Yuuta laughs—he laughs like she did, just then, for no one but himself. 
And that night, the rain comes fast. Yuuta stands behind the gym, back pressed to the glass, cheeks warm with both pride and loss. He pulls out his phone, lets his fingers hover over his brother’s number. All day, friends text, teammates pour emojis into group chat. But Yuuta just stares at the glass, dark except for his own face.
Tied, not broken. The PA man made sure to say it slow.
