It’s late May at Asagiri High. Summer feels close. A steady drumbeat rolls from the gym, colored banners hang on almost every wall, and talk of stalls is everywhere. The annual school festival arrives in three days, and with it comes panic, hope, and something like magic for many students. The bell rings, hallways fill, everything feels alive. There’s laughter. Then groans. But nobody bails from the café, not even as phones buzz with messages that another, glitzier event’s about to open in the gym.
While mop buckets slosh, Kaho finds herself telling stories to a visiting grade-schooler about watering radishes too much. “They withered anyway,” she jokes, “but then I tried again and two months later, pop! Giant leaves.” The small crowd warms up, now drawn as much by stubborn cheer as food. Is it luck, grit, or something deeper that brings people when you least expect?
Voices rise as dusk looms. Sunlight slips long from the window on the polished floor, streaking gold through jars of homemade jam. The postage-stamp kitchen is wild. Jars pop open, pies reloaded as fast as trays reach empty. None of their batch scripts, each one thrown out and rewritten in the rush. Kaho forgets to count coins, finds herself instead fixing everyone’s apron, joking, mopping strawberry from the counter. Soon the judges come—also teachers, but in festival mode—and chat hangs on what flavor of plum makes the jam special. Kaho watches one judge’s eyebrows arch up, a second whisper something, then they pencil two ticks on a card she can just make out. Has her gamble shaken up the right people? Miya grins, finally. But the crowd isn’t thinning. Late comers squeeze inside, and delivery from the farm arrives a bit late: box after box of extra apples.
