Drifting Hearts: Stardust Sonata

Mio always wondered what’s out there. She’s spent her years at the Vega Academy for Space Pilots just staring at the sky, dreams brighter than the station’s lumen-charts. She wants to see something no one else has seen. In the nights, she lines up pebbles on her desk in the shape of constellations. ‘One day I’ll go that far,’ Mio whispers to her patchwork Hermès bear, left by her older sister, Ren.

It’s training day in the ring—delicate drones weaving between crescent asteroids. Each pilot must dock with a dust-walker: a tiny comet. Mio rushes to her ship, Firefly, knees jangling, heart way up in her throat. Kael slides past her, helmet underarm, grin easy and sure. ‘Try to keep up, slowpoke.’ Her face goes warm, but her eyes burn. She straps in, humming old earth lullabies.

Then, all communications cut out. Control’s screens flicker and fade to black, voices hush, save static and whispers on the cracked comm-line. Firefly careens near Kael’s ship—the Veil—when a pulse. Not from the Academy. Nobody knows where it came from. Colors paint the shattered ring. Tiny, fizzing wormholes pop in the training zone, swallowing chunks from the asteroids and a drone or two. There’s an eerie rhythm. Mio’s screen displays words: ‘Midcape Signal—Search who calls.’

Kael is the first to speak. ‘Is that coming from you, rookie?’ But Mio shakes her head, unable to answer, darting hands through the air trying to redirect. Then silence again. Only the music from Mio’s old lullaby player, which she forgot in a side port, drifts into the mic. The nebula pulses with living color. A voice—calm, low—echoes over the comm system, though the input is dead:

‘All drift. Not all drifted are lost.’

Panic snaps inside the pilots. Emi, their friend but also eternal skeptic, takes control back. ‘This isn’t some test! Did Engineering ever finish refitting the wormhole dampers?’ Her look darkens. Later, in her own ship, Emi keeps asking, as if talking would keep reality at bay. ‘If that’s a prank, it’s not cool.’ Kael sends a joke—he won’t admit he’s scared. You ever want to look tough? Act like you’re not crumbling inside? How would you have acted here?

The Firefly slips into one rift, pulled by something besides mass or math, her hull kissed by star frost. The wormhole tunnel flashes up star-maps from dead human colonies, birthdays and burn marks shimmer over the glass, porthole-sized scenes spinning so fast her brain aches. Mio sees Ren in a cold, dead suit in one panel, arms waving for help, then gone. aicg-8057-img-2-6a34e2d01f0d5.png

Emerging, she floats above a gas giant, Firefly sputtering—the controls respond, but odd. Her bear, limp beside the throttle, glows gently along the seams. ‘Why would Ren be there?’ Mio mutters, voice thick. Kael pings over a band: he’s near, traded the Reyno Asteroids for lost sky nobody mapped. Emi now is on emergency signals, reading engine stress charts off an old slate board. They can’t get back. The fleet manager’s last check-in scrolls on the backup nav screens. Their home is two wormholes out—if the system cycles right.

Mio brings up her sister’s old voice messages, trying to work hints from static and delay. Kael doesn’t read maps well, but likes stories. Sitting side by side in a nebular mist, Mio retells tales from Earth’s rivers and northern lights—stars flick—yet there’s longing behind his jokes. ‘Wonder what it would take to go back?’ Kael admits in a low tone. He doesn’t just mean to the academy. aicg-8057-img-3-6a34e33012b07.png

Gently drifting, their ships link. They trade backup batteries. Kael hums her lullaby back to her, slightly off-key. Mio starts piecing together the meanings—auroras and comm loops flag the Midcape pattern, something that once crewed her home ship where Ren vanished. She speaks to the system, as if it might answer: ‘Is Ren in there? Or just a memory?’

A whale-shaped shadow slips past the hulls—a cybernetic ghost seeder, old as the Rings. Its broadcast triggers an info tap: coordinates coded in sleep-song beats. Emi pieces this out first—she’s half-genius, half-pessimist after all. Her call launches across all comms: ‘Those numbers match the distress pulse from three years ago! Ren’s final message!’ Mio shakes inside, hopes gnawing away; Kael grabs her hand from his side-ship over the maglink. Isn’t hope hard, wild? Can you picture what you’d do?

The friends point ships in. Each groove in the nav-panel lines up as that old cloud-lullaby pours into the silence again. They drop through a field of silver embers. The gas giant below spins, clouds lit gold by soft flame. Then—Echo! A life flare, someone alive spotted by Emi’s scopes—signal almost human, growing stronger. aicg-8057-img-4-6a34e392914c9.png

Kael: ‘You ready?’ Mio doesn’t speak. Her hand shakes but she smiles. Her sister’s name crackles from deep static.

The next wormhole gate within sight opens like an eye.

The ships slip toward it, engines trembling, eager—fire in the blood, fuel sharp, hope higher than the ring lights. The scene ends as Ren’s suit beacon flashes in the abyss, slow but steady. Nothing else in the void. Does anyone actually know the line between memory and real? Another ship’s shadow flickers—engine bright and blue—right at the final frame. Will they reach her? Do you hear Ren’s song in the stars?
