Scorched Shadows: The Tramonte Survival Arc
Would you risk it all if it’s the only way home?
Yuma Ikeda, quiet yet sharp, is seventeen. His dream? To climb every marked peak near Tramonte Ridge by graduation. He sets off that morning with his best friend, Shiki, and scout club rival, Akiko. They all act tough, but everyone feels a pinch of nerves. The dry season is at its peak, and Tramonte Forest is burned out, brittle, easy to upset.
An hour up the path, the world goes strange. There’s a dull boom. Ash falls onto the map, courtesy of a small, fast wildfire down the slope. Akiko spits, “This wasn’t in any of the warnings.” Shiki’s clutching his camera. All three are on the wrong side, flames in-between, wind fierce on their backs.
No mobile signal. Some water, one flare, and two weak radios. Not a lot for a real mess. They throw their packs together. Should they backtrack, or push up towards Whitecliff Peak? Each way is a gamble.
Yuma checks what little is left in their med kit. “Whitecliff’s further, but the wind’s moving west,” he points out. Akiko argues, says cresting the north saddle is downwind—smart but steep. Have you ever watched friends lose hope in their own plans?
Shiki tries the radio: empty crackle. Smoke thickens. Their punches at old codes don’t snag anyone. Morning light fades to red-grey glare. Yuma wonders aloud, “Are folks even looking for us?”
Development comes with strange luck. They stumble on boot tracks far older than theirs—a pair going the other way. Akiko leans to inspect. Shiki grins, our first big break, even if it means trusting unknown steps in a burning maze.
Anxiety thickens. By dusk they’re on ridgeline basalt. Breath raw, Yuma covers his face—the smoke starts to sting. Shiki mutters, “No stories in the world books could paint this right.” There was once an old lookout on this ridge. Its bones don’t show yet—just hints, snapped cables in the dust.
“Is it all luck, or skill when it’s life and death?” Akiko blurts, voice flat. Silence answers her. Each has a different kind of courage here.
When the moon rises, cold and bright, despite the smoke, Shiki almost slips carving a “help” signal in the scree field. Akiko steadies him. They face grim odds, but won’t quit. Isn’t it harder to pause than to act when there’s nothing left to do?
A brief rain douses the path, slick mud mixed with soot. Yuma pushes them into an overhang for cover. Water slips into his left boot, soaking his foot. Night brings out odd noises, snapping timbers, and far-off alarm calls—search teams, or more danger?
They share rations, split into small crumbles. Tired and dirty, Akiko stands guard. The stars fade a bit in smoke, but every bright fleck looks like a promise. A deer’s shape edges by at midnight—it flees the fire too. Who are the hunted, really?
“Do you think our families guess how close we are right now?” Shiki whispers. The others don’t reply.
Thunder rumbles late. Yuma wakes from near sleep, nudged by an odd crackling, closer than before. A small red glow is erupting on the far swale. They have minutes, maybe less, to choose another escape or climb straight through black spines above them. Akiko’s hand tightens on her club badge—a keepsake from older, safer hikes.
Dawn teases from distant breaks in the smoke, but the way out isn’t clear. As they rush toward where the old lookout should be, Yuma slips, catching himself just as flame leaps at last year’s grass shoulder. Akiko drags him up. All three lock eyes. “No speeches. We move.” How would you handle that fear, if it caught you by the throat?
Roots and stone cut everyone’s palms. A battered wooden tower, half-collapsed, crests through fog. Its old solar beacon glints under soot—still working, barely. The last words spoken are shout-whispered, “Make every second count!” Everyone runs for it.
Right as Yuma jumps for the hatch, the floor sags in. Ash billows. An old radio lies stuck to the wall rack, humming static—could it be a last hope? Akiko digs for the flare, hands shaking. Shiki catches outside radio signals—one, two bands. Could someone be coming or is it a glitch of wind and luck?
You might hear the beacon’s buzz echo as the episode ends. The tower, the fire, and hope—each trembling on the edge. A rescue tries to break through smokey walls. But will daylight mean safety, or another run for their lives?
