Fragments of Yesterday
Fragments of Yesterday
The late bell rings across Sendai High. Yuuji Hoshino has his old camera strung round his neck. He’s fifteen, a second-year, and has a strange goal – he wants to photograph memories before they fade. Let’s be real, you ever lost a memory and wished you could get it back?
This story arc begins with Yuuji watching the rest of the photography club packing up. Sakura, the club leader, hands him an old, dusty photo album.
“You’re chasing ghosts again, Hoshino.” She’s always like that, teasing but she cares. “No one remembers that festival. The alumni say it was special. How special?”
Yuuji gives her a side glance. “That’s what I want to see for myself.” Pretty simple desire, right?
Outside, his closest friend, Kei Nakamura, waits under a lone vending machine light. Kei is blunt, crushes energy drinks like candy, and swears there’s nothing odd about the club room. Have you ever felt stuck, dragged back by some feeling you can’t name?
Kei claps Yuuji’s shoulder. “Man, this obsession… Think you’ll see that girl yourself?” Yuuji scoffs, half-amused, half-thoughtful. In the stories, a girl in red appeared every year, never changing, haunting photos and flickering at the edge of crowds.
Night falls. Only Mr. Satou, their teacher, remains at school. He sweeps the hall, muttering. “Every picture is a curse. That’s all.”
Yuuji and Kei scan old pictures near the archway. A memory festival, fireworks, a shadow at the corner. It’s always the girl, blurred and alone. Kei clicks her tongue. “What’s she want? Why’s she still here?”
Rain hits. Sakura texts Yuuji, Come to the roof. Sunset’s wild today.
On the roof, the sky glows orange-red. The trio lines up. Yuuji takes three shots – but the first is different. In the picture, the girl in red shows between them, light passing through.
Everything flips fast. Sakura gasps, and her hand trembles. Kei shakes her head, trying hard not to panic. Why did that happen? Are ghosts real or just memories with teeth?
The plot thickens that week. Each day, Yuuji photographs hidden corners. Each night, the pictures whisper names, small half-sounds rising from paper. Kei grows distant. Sakura researches missing records before 2002 – the year with no festival files left. Ever find yourself tracking clues you didn’t even want to know?
Soon, Sakura stumbles on a rumor. A list of names from the lost festival year, one girl circled: Akari Shimizu. It’s as if part of the truth wants to stay out of reach.
Yuuji presses on. His photos now blur until, late at night, he shots a mirror in the science hall. The picture shows a hand, trying to push through. Kei texts him, worried: “Just stop.” Yuuji won’t.
The final night of the arc. A sudden power outage floods the school in blue moonlight. The club members move through the halls, their photos reacting to darkness with shining outlines.
They reach the auditorium, floor covered with flower petals. It smells like rain and old stories. Sakura holds up a candle. Light flickers. In one last shot, Akari appears at the end of the room, still, watching them with sad eyes.
“Do you want to remember or forget?” Her voice sounded old yet the words carried clear. Sakura fumbles for an answer. Kei shivers. Yuuji stands his ground, camera ready.
He goes, “Could you show us why you stay?” Akari smiles just a bit, and gives them something. Is it hope or regret? The answer isn’t easy.
Then, all of it fades – light, girl, noises. The club sits alone in the dark. No one can speak. Strings snap inside each of them.
Cliffhanger time: the photos in Yuuji’s hands now show a new memory each time he looks. He can’t tell if they’re real or not. One picture shows their own faces old, thirty years ahead. Where did these come from?
What would you do if a photo held your future? Would you accept that tomorrow already happened?
Each episode of the arc pulls apart memories, digging at what’s left hidden, and never really tells if Akari was a ghost or just a bad memory grown strong. In chasing what’s lost, Yuuji finds a piece of himself he wasn’t hoping for. You ever get that strange feeling when the past won’t let go?
