A chill wind rises over sleepy Nakanai. Atop a run-down antique shop sits a cracked glass doll, paper tag tied around a small wrist. One word in faded ink: Matsuri. Some call that room a grave, but do you think a simple room can bind evil?
Kaito Hoshino hates dolls. Can’t explain why. Shadows seem to pool beneath glass eyes, and he always looks twice. But it’s senior year—and anyone who knows Kaito, besides his sister Nanako, would bet good money that he couldn’t tell a haunted relic from a teacup. Since his mother left last fall, only Nanako pulls him to leave his room. Not much else gets through.
“You’re always hiding,” Nanako sighs, breezing in with her usual force. “Come with me this time. Folk fair’s back. Tonight some kids will try the dare—stay past ten inside Baba Kana’s store. People say things move when they’re alone.” Kaito groans, but she beams at him. “Don’t be a wimp.” Truth is, he can’t say no. What would you do?
Crows gather near dark as seven teens, flashlights clutched, slip onto the rotting floorboards of Baba Kana’s. Whispering each other’s names proves they’re still here. Shadows warp, shaping odd patterns over broken shelves. All that’s left unsold lies bundled in one spot—brittle scrolls, loose drawer handles, faded dolls.
Yuto Kotake dares Kaito: “Take something for proof.” Some wild push from inside drives Kaito’s hand to Matsuri. He tries not to look in the doll’s fogged eyes. He won’t admit it, but it feels wrong. A chill seeps into his palm—his heart jams like a stuck shutter, but everyone is watching so he tucks it in his bag. He tells himself it’s old air. Have you ever touched something and felt it wasn’t right?
Back home, the doll seems lifeless by the windowsill. Nanako’s sneer fades. That night, heavy footsteps pace inside the wall. Kaito dreams the room is cold and far older than it is. He sees string-bound wrists, glass chipped by small teeth, lips whispering a name.
“Help me… let me come home.”
In weeks, Nanako shifts—wider eyes, fits of rage at small things. She wakes screaming, saying a girl at her window won’t leave. Kaito snaps. He puts Matsuri in his locker at school, but the next night it sits on Nanako’s bed. Friends ask why he can’t show up on time or meet their eyes. His grades slip.
Real dread creeps in when Yuto turns up silent, fingerbones bruised, sketching the doll’s face over and over in black ink. Neighboring families whisper. Rumors swirl: a cold girl seen near the Hoshino place, always out the corner of your eye. Kaito’s own dreams eat at him.
Kaito begs for help from Reiko Shimizu, third-year, known for odd jobs others won’t touch. “Objects bond to people,” she mutters, peering through talisman-tinted glasses. “That doll chose you now. Its owner’s hurt is stuck to it. The person who freed it becomes a thread. Sever all three—a curse, a regret, a witness—or it grabs you.” Kaito’s voice cracks: “What if I don’t?” She stares. “Then you take her place.” 
To break the link, they hunt legend. The last owner, Baba Kana, vanished after burning her stock in ‘79. Only the doll remained. Nanako, now fearful yet unable to be away from Matsuri, sets up candles for a midnight séance. As flame flickers, windowglass weeps. Matsuri reeks of grave wax, and a child’s shadow dances on the far wall. Whispers, near and soft, echo: “You promised. Don’t let go.”
None dare breathe. Nanako lifts Matsuri, fingers shaking. Words inked on the string change: “Another”. Something in the air presses against their lungs. Kaito lunges, but he can’t break the thread tying sister to doll. Even fire won’t catch on Matsuri. Why is that?
At dawn, Nanako sits frozen, the doll clenched in her hands, bleeding from small cuts at the wrist. Kaito sees etched into fake porcelain—his own name joining the list before hers fades. Is it ever fair to trade yourself for family? He looks at Nanako and knows what’s coming—if it’s not stopped, one will vanish by morning. 
Last shot: White daylight lances through the old shop. Kaito, Reiko, Nanako and the doll stand beneath toppled shelves, old glass swirling dust. Kaito asks the reader, “If you had to free one soul but bind another, could you choose?”
