The Glass Butterfly Case

April. Rain pools by rusted iron drains on south side streets. In Kitamachi, sharp-eyed high school detective Ren Sato races his half-broken bike past a row of colorless houses. He should go straight home, but there’s a choking mystery on his mind. Why did the astronomy club’s kind vice president, Yuki Asano, leap from the school roof holding a glass butterfly?

Ren slips inside Seiryo High behind cleaning staff, beating police tape to the locked rooftop. The security guard, Oji-san, is chewing gum, calm unlike most. ‘Do what you need,’ he laughs. Ren shoots a look—did he know Yuki well enough to joke in this mess?

Class rep Mika stops him by the stairs. “You’re going to break in again, right Sato? This isn’t a joke.” Ren nods. “Wasn’t a joke last time. Something’s off about Yuki’s fall. Not with her.’ He holds the butterfly in his head. Why break a rule ‘for science’ and jump with a fragile glass trinket? Is there meaning in glass cut wings?

Wind howls up top. Rain-speckled concrete spreads in streaks, reaching the taped-off corner. Ren pulls out his sketchbook, tracing outlines: The shattered spot on the pavement below, the glass bits near the maroon scuff from her school shoes. No note, only clean tiles, and a whisper of rolling butterflies handmade from glass littered in the planters. Why leave them here?

He summons clubmate Jun—laidback, eyes barely open, but remembers anime lines for every moment. “Ren, you really think Asano would kill herself? Guy in J-Drama always leaves a clue.” Ren nods. “I’m banking on it.” They split the scene with care, searching corners, finding a single glove cuff snagged on the wire fence. Mud, not blood, marks on it.

But the glass butterfly haunts him most.

By next morning, the teacher nags Ren for snooping. “Let the school manage it!” he snaps. At lunch, word swirls: the third-floor art room window was left open during rain. Seniors whisper of rivalry, jealousies, the glass butterflies, and Yuki. Ren visits her empty seat. Letters spill out from underneath—friend notes from all grades, but no hint of pain or hate. He wonders, is the answer so clean?

‘Folks say Yuki met with transfer boy Ryusei after sunset,’ Jun mutters, slurping ramen. They chase him to the chemistry lab, where Ryusei twitches. He shies from Ren’s eye. “She asked me about break-ins. Said she thought someone slipped storage keys to people who shouldn’t have them. I said, don’t get involved, Yuki.” Long shadows linger as he speaks. Jun looks away. ‘It’s all club drama, Sato. Let it drop.’ But do they ever solve cases by dropping them?

The butterfly glass comes from a stained-glass art kit. Mika finds the receipt: one kit missing, one paid for by Yuki a week back, the other under anonymous club funds. Ren realizes there’s more in this web. He pockets the muddy glove. Prints are gone, rain soaked. Or did someone clean it?

After dark, Ren returns, finding Oji-san clutching the fence, gaze fixed where Yuki fell. Oji’s hand shakes. Ren sits beside him. ‘Knew her since first year. Helped her get club permissions. Pain seeing them act like she… like it was all a mood swing.’ The breeze hurts. Ren wonders if trauma makes every witness a suspect. What do you think, reader—could Oji be hiding regret or truth?

Ren grabs Jun and Mika, heading next to the science block. There, shards of glass line up like staged art in the sink. Jun mouths, ‘Most folks don’t make glass in clubs.’ Mika freezes. “What if the glass wasn’t just for butterflies? Can we trust the club’s claim about money?” Ren doubts it. They review receipts, as club leader Sayaka fumbles excuses. Digital logs show storage keys out at midnight three times—signed off under Yuki’s name, not hers.

But Yuki was home by then. Her phone data pinged from Gato sushi at midnight, not school. Too many eyes in too many places. Who frames a dead girl, and why risk snags in so public a place? Suspense cracks his tired resolve. ‘Someone in the club, not Yuki, snuck out?’ Ren wonders.

They interview art teacher Murasaki: benign, old, oddball ties. Over tea he tells them, ‘The butterflies are always about longing. Out of reach things we chase, eh?’ Is that what Yuki was reaching for? Jun breaks the mood by quoting his favorite detective, and Mika pushes Murasaki. The teacher squirms. “Don’t ask kids awkward things. Some happiness looks sad from outside.” That’s not an answer either.

Something’s off about those club receipts. Where’s the rest of club’s money? Is it building up—a bribe, hush fund, cruel prank?
Jun and Ren tail Sayaka to the rooftop next day. She shoves a note behind the breaker, whispering as if to a ghost. It’s a confession. She stole funds to cover her sick sister’s supplies and planned to blame Yuki. She wails alone. Did Yuki fall, or was she pushed by guilt not her own?

Second thought: Going by Yuki’s texts from the night before, she planned to meet someone with initials ‘O.K.’ at the stairs, between midnight and one. No one with those initials in school, but a look through old rosters finds club graduate Ohto Kiga—is he watching from afar?

Ren stares at the glass again. Could pieces be planted to point away? Or maybe left as a hint? His own memories flash—years ago his sister also made glass dragons. Left him a puzzle when she vanished. He’s chased truth since. This isn’t just school stuff; he needs to win, for Yuki, and for himself.

The group interviews each club member. Ryusei now shadows Sayaka, jumping at jokes. Mika tracks budget logs, hacking into old audit files, her hands shaking when she pieces the credits together. Jun, silent, solves parallel club grill mysteries—where did last year’s president steal leftovers to? Relief comes late at night when Ren posts his map.

Key detail drops from a call: the night custodian mixes up ‘Asano’ and ‘Asano’s ghost’. Oji-san stares, recounting a blurry figure leaving through a side gate near two.

Rain returns. The butterflies are recast by Mika’s lens—the colors are off, tiny silk thread marked ‘forgive me’. It’s genuine, grief caught in glass and melted hope. At dawn, under half-built clouds, Ren leads police to where the last anonymous butterfly pouch lies, behind the garden tools. Soon they’ll all know, but Ren wonders if you can solve sorrow, or only reveal the seams and stitch new windows.

The club’s glass display has a spot left blank—guilt can’t fill gaps. Mika comes into class, eyes wet, saying quietly: “Done chasing. Just wish we could’ve asked her herself.” Ren answers, ‘Maybe she answered with glass.’ Kids stare from windows as the investigation closes, but Oji-san whispers—a new clue, a letter left under the doormat addressed to Ohto Kiga. Ren barely breathes. What could it say?

Lights flash on the radio, news that old records went missing last night. No one sees the cracked frame in Yuki’s photo portrait, or the butterfly wing pressed there. The arc ends with Ren staring at that case, hand closed around glass that doesn’t draw blood, not yet. Would you chase the deeper truth, or step away now?
