Black Chamber: The Fall of Verum Institute
Prologue: Shadows on the Outskirts
It’s always colder near the fence of Verum Institute. Ryo Tamaki knows this spot well, but today something’s wrong. His breath comes fast as he scans the abandoned play yard. Has anyone else ever heard laughter echo off that barbed wall this late at night?
His sister, Yui, stands behind him. She rubs her arms, watching that single tower window that stays lit after midnight. She whispers, “Why does Dr. Merrow leave the lab so late?”
Act One: A Dark Surprise
Inside the Institute, old stone halls twist between classrooms and labs. Staff try to smile, but most just shuffle by. Ryo’s a transfer, curious, shy, obsessed with hidden places. He befriends Mika, brilliant, cold, loyal. Together, they dig up Institute rumors.
Why do rats from the grounds disappear? Why is there a second fence—deep in the woods—that no one talks about?
Act Two: Sirens at Night
Ryo drifts away from Yui in class, collecting keys and listening through old vents. One Friday, alarm bells blast at 1 a.m. Every window flashes red. Faculty swarm, blocking doors. A moan cuts through the halls. Must mammals sound like that in pain?
Mika grabs Ryo’s arm: “There’s a stairway, in the southwest wing. You want answers? Let’s go.” They run, breath catching, shoes wet from flooded pipes. Questions bounce between them: will they regret this?

Act Three: The Test Subjects
Deep in the lower lab, glass tanks line the hall. Fog curls at their feet. Some tanks hold slumped shapes, half-furred, human hands twitching in sleep, some with thick glass gone spider-webbed with cracks. Yui appears down the passage. Her hair is wild, her lab coat torn. “Don’t look in the first tank,” she warns.
Her voice shakes. “They’re not awake yet, but when they are—keep quiet. If it moves, don’t speak its name.”
Act Four: Broken Promises
Shuffled records reveal secret trials—missing children, many files missing birth dates. Ryo rebels. He’s sure someone he remembers from childhood is hidden below, used as bait for failed projects.
Dr. Merrow corners them in his office. He’s pale, always smiling, still as air. “Experiment 9 hasn’t broken by chance. Some patterns only show in broken light. We do important work, Ryo. Don’t spoil that, or there’s nowhere you can go. People like us—you, me—no one wants us left running loose.”
Act Five: The Unwinding
There’s a storm now out beyond, wind howling, trees crashing. Ryo helps Yui smash the controls in the test foyer, opening all the tanks at once.
Mika covers their escape. All at once, the test subjects stagger out, howling or wailing. Are they lost? Do they blame Ryo and Mika, or Dr. Merrow alone?

Epilogue: To Live with Monsters
By dawn, Verum Institute is burning. Rescue teams circle the fence. Ryo finds himself staring at smashed glass and twisted beds, still clutching his sister’s hand.
Yui looks back at the clouds of dark smoke. Her voice is raw: “If they find us, it’s not over. Promise me, Ryo, next time we fight, you let them run free. All of them. Even if it means losing me.”
Can you trust anyone—even your own sister—once the experiments leave the lab and choose for themselves?

Cliffhanger: The Black Letter
A week after the fire, Ryo finds an envelope in his locker. The paper is natural, rough. One word: “Run.” All the missing children’s birthdays are scribbled on the back. And there’s a hospital sticker this time—will he jump in to help, or save himself?
What would you do if every secret you helped free never died… just changed shape?
