Act 1: Meet Kris, Child of Fallen Wings
Kris always looked up, past bright clouds, searching for the edges of the sky. Is there an end above even the floating isles his people call home? That longing drives every morning for Kris, age sixteen, a boy of battered wings and small hopes. This is no gentle place. Above the world, kingdoms hover on spirit breezes; warriors in feathered armor guard sky-mines of silver windstone, keeping all but the kingdom’s own within fostered borders. Still, there’s a gap in the clouds, and Kris can’t help himself.
His best friend, Lira, spies from the old market roof, sparrow-like, as he launches again, wings flicking. “You’re gonna break your nose again. Or fall all the way down next time.”
“Worth a try. Thought maybe, today, I’d hit level eight at least. Who knows what’s up top?”
She laughs. “I’ll ask again: do you want me to try too or just shout when a captain shows?”
Kris grins at her. Sometimes it’s enough knowing he doesn’t climb alone.
Act 2: Birth of Conflict, The Eidolon’s Echo
One night, a strange shadow streaks across the twin moons. It splits the ancient peace that makes even hard-scrabble teens like Kris safe. Next day, at the gear depot, old masters argue: “Did you see that? Something old broke loose up there. Neither wind nor bird.” News rides with each whisper, faster in the bright sky than by courier.
Later, when Kris tries the old catapult trick with Lira—timing wing bursts and wind swells—he almost collides with burning light. The thing knocks him sideways, feathers half singed; visions echo in his mind: a voice, neither male nor female, whispering his real name, long-buried. Arms shaking, he winces.
“Did you… feel that?” Lira gasps.
Kris nods. “Yeah. It was calling me. There was a ring… below the isles?”
Act 3: Downfall and the Ancient Gate
That night, guards storm the home row. No one expected such risk—someone blasted the supply silos using strange flickering energy. Kris overhears a guard, voice muffled, growl: “Only those who fly higher than their place would draw that on us. Somebody climbed past the ward-lights without permission.” On sleep’s edge, Kris wonders: was it him? Or just the price paid for chasing light after dusk?
Lira draws a map on old bark. “If we slip gate-seven near midnight, we go down. Not up. Maybe that’s what the light wants. Kris, are you still in?” His hands shake, but he gives a shaky thumbs-up. “We need to see for ourselves. Not just what our prince claims.”
Act 4: Into the Gray—A Rival Appears
Their plan would be tough enough if they were alone. Enter Damos, son of the royal councilor. Damos sneers at Kris in flight school; he’s got perfect feathers, smug eyebrows, tight boots. By daylight, he challenges Kris to a race—with bets stacked on who dares lowest. Secret: Damos heard about the loose energy too. He wants whatever lies beneath, but masked behind greater pride and family pressure.
Race clock ticking, townsfolk gather at ledges. A flutter starts: tinny songs, mothers swapping stews, even bored soldiers edge closer. Kris steals a look at Lira, nods once—off they leap, diving toward the dusk-pillars, wind burning every sense raw. For seven heartbeats, he’s free, won’t think of bruised arms. At the bottom, a swirl—energy shaping into a doorway etched with spirals, alive with colors unseen. Damos hovers over him, already clutching a strange windstone. “Beat you here, fallen crow! But which key unlocks this?” Kris replies, chest tight: “Maybe not the one you grabbed.”
Act 5: The Gate Opens
Close behind come wailing sky horns. Kris, Lira, Damos: now fugitives with half the city on their tail. The gateway throbs. Unbidden, it draws them in with a shudder, the world outside fading, the sky stretching into wild spectrum. Threshold crossed, everything changes—gravity flips, memory stabs clear. Shadows hunch in corners; voices call, not hateful but mournful. Kris grabs Lira’s hand, mouth dry. “It’s not what I thought. Do we keep going?” Lira breathes out, eyes wide. “We’ve seen too much not to.”
Cliffhanger: The Crowns Below—they’re Awake
Wind lifts hair, colors flash anew. At the arc’s end, a great throne looms—cold, shaped of ice and smoky aura, heart pounding in sync with the crossing ones. Out steps a figure: neither spirit nor person, more echo than flesh. “All who descend must face what’s forgotten to climb again.” Kris, Lira, Damos share a look. Are you ready for the cost? Did you predict who might find you beneath, rather than aloft?
