Festival Blueprints: Starlit Promises
This is Minato’s story. He’s a second year who spends more time in the shadows than on stage. He dreams of telling stories, but his art club’s booth is lost behind bake sales. No big deal, right?
As May comes, the student council starts planning Mizumori High’s spring festival. Booths, games, a big play – everything rests on clubs showing up. Nagisa, the new class rep, bursts into Minato’s room one lunch break, her hair still wet from gym.
“You, art boy! We need help for the main event. No costumes, no drama!” Then she adds, “Or do you always eat lunch with the janitor?”
Minato’s ears burn. He shrugs. “I guess I can help. But … can you read my stage script first?”
Nagisa frowns. “Stage? Our class picked a haunted forest theme.”
“It’s got a forest. And a ghost.”
The script gets passed once, then caught in upperclassman vice-grip. Ren from the drama club reads aloud at snack time. Question for a second: ever had your short story torn apart by three girls in panda pajamas?
The class debates all week. Some say use the art club’s creepy sets. Others, just do cosplay and set up a boba stand. The mood is tense. Data: At past festivals, 70% of first-year booths flopped. Second years don’t want the same.
On Friday, Erika, the quiet keyboard player, sends a message: “Minato’s a stage ninja. Let him run it.” She barely talks in real life. Even teachers are shocked.
Minato now leads a rough squad – painter, sound tech, three reluctant actors. He must merge haunted forest with bittersweet Ghibli-style peace. His support: TXT chains with Erika, motivator messages from Nagisa, even a few random doodles from Ren.
The festival’s two weeks off. Practices run late. Props break; half the pine cones vanish. Drama unfolds when Yukio forgets his one, short line (“The fireflies dance … ”). The rest poke fun, but Minato pulls Yukio aside.
“Let’s walk through it, just you and me?”
Yukio nods, quiet but sure. His practice line stays short. “The fireflies dance … when I’m not watching,” he says. Not exactly the script, but Minato just shakes his head and smiles. Eight more scenes left.
During the height of prep, their budget gets slashed after a festival paint spill. Half the clubs fight over tables. Minato improvises. Erika steals someone’s garden solar lights for mood lighting. Ren, never flustered, rewrites half the jokes overnight.
One afternoon, Nagisa finds the art team slumped beside empty soda bottles and a heap of fallen branches: “Is this art? Or war crimes?” she grins. Everyone cracks up. Deadlines trail behind, but no one is quitting.
Festival day arrives fast. Students run wild with flyers and festival caps. Will anyone wander to a mismatched haunted forest behind the food row? Minato squints at flawed pine-tree panels as curtains rise. Nerves, even for a kid who never aimed for main stage, hit hard.
Here’s something real. As soon as the show starts, little kids giggle from the shadows, parents line up near the curtain. Ren bumps a fake bush and forgets a page, but Nagisa (who stepped in for a cold-stricken second actor) ad-libs her lines, grinning wider than she has all spring.
Cameras flash. The “twist ending” yanked from Minato’s ghostly story gets rare attention. There’s quiet during Erika’s piano bit, pale sunlight spilling on her hair while Yukio mouths his one, weird line for the last time. Did Minato’s haunted grove confuse everyone or leave folks wanting more? Would you have worked the scene different?
The applause is soft but lasts. That night, after they lose second place in the “Wildest Stall” vote, Minato, Erika and Nagisa stand under hanging stars strung across iron gates. “You slammed it,” Nagisa says.
Minato looks up. Maybe? There’s a voice through the crowd. Student council calls for a meeting. The festival has a closing parade … but one club’s set has gone missing, and a masked kid runs past with their banners held high. Was it theft or a prank? Anyone can end a night soft, but what if the twist is still coming?
