Astro Drifters: Keepers of the Forgotten Moon

The plasma storms never stop near Saturn Station Ten. That’s daily life for Kazuo, junior mechanic and forever dreamer. He wants more than the slow drift on the old cargo ship Umida. Yet, every time the storm howls outside or sparks rise from the engines below deck, it calls to him.

Naho, his childhood friend and wily data-slipper, nudges him with her boot. ‘Staring at empty space again? You see treasure in the void.’ Kazuo laughs. It hits different today. He shows her a decrypt he snagged off the relay last night: hiding inside, an old chart pointing to a lost moon called Ashika. The route looks carved from old miner scrawl. It’s not a fake. ‘This place—it’s real,’ Kazuo insists, hope blooming in his chest.

Naho grins. ‘If it’s treasure, we split it.’ Easy words—she would follow Kazuo anywhere. Keito, Umida’s half-jovian, half-cybernetic cat, whips its tail twice with interest. Even their uptight captain, Mara Vex, pauses the sim-yarn to look. But Mara’s rules are iron. In her clipped voice, ‘Anything strange means risk for all. I don’t touch faded maps.’ So Mara bans all talk of Ashika. She doesn’t know Kazuo’s stubbornness.

The Forbidden Map

Kazuo can’t toss the idea. He sees Ashika every time he closes his eyes. He spends the next few days snatching moments: piecing old chunks of code, mapping back-routes through asteroid debris. Naho’s better with locks—when she offers to hack the main nav computer, he doesn’t fight far. Have you ever chased something so hard nobody could stop you? This starts like that.

Very early, with Naho riding backup and Keito stowed as silent as ever, Kazuo slips Umida onto the Ashika course during waste delivery. The ship drops off-grid. Engine muffled, stealth systems dark—the trio hold tension like breath in lungs. It gets hotter across their hidden track, but that could be nerves as much as failing coolers.

‘Not scared?’ Naho chirps. There’s real fear mixed in, though. ‘You should at least worry once, fool.’ Kazuo shrugs her off. Nearing the moon, signals grow nuts. Hissing—old relays, defunct droids, strange patterns flash over the navscreen, like coded warnings from the void. Even Keito scratches the glass, senses flaring like sudden lightning.

Ghosts of Ashika

The approach window opens. The lost moon drifts half-in shadow, tunnels across its ice. There isn’t a reverie here—just quiet and a feeling something else is watching. Did you ever step in a place meant for other people, people who never left?

Touchdown shakes the Umida, loose gear popping free. The landing bay shows signs of storm, but no other ships. As their boots echo down the first hallway, Kazuo admits exactly how dangerous this feels. Naho snaps photos, Keito’s synth-fur spikes up hong like snapped wires.

They track the map: first to a control room with alien writing they can’t read, next down steps crawling with memory node flowers—plants that only grow in dead ship air. The deeper they go, the more the walls talk. No voices, but light pulses—urgent maps, silence codes. Why does the ship start to twitch and creak, cold shudders like it recalls pain from before?

The Heart of the Moon

They find it six decks below navigational. A room locked by a pattern-puzzle old as sequencer code. After enough tries from Naho and random luck from Keito’s paw, the hatch groans open. Gold fog bursts into their faces, heavy with filtered starlight, and inside are floating orbs—a hidden Seed Vault scoured by ancient scientists.

Kazuo approaches, palm to glass. The Vault projects holo-memories: tapes of old miners, and flashes of a storm that ruined half the outpost before it could seed any new planets. There’s a small survival pod, its reads blinking faint green.

‘Is this it?’ Naho’s voice cracks, eyes shining. Suddenly lights blacken. An alert howls from ceiling mounts—live feed connecting. That’s when shadows fill the corridor behind them. The map, it never said anything about live sentries or active droids.

The Defense Line

‘Get behind me.’ Kazuo squares himself, holding a rusted miner spanner like it was a sword. Keito drops low, ears flat.

Creeping in—antique drones every shape, insect-ish, sparkling with ancient ice. There’s an old king at their center, all armor and hate. They talk in fixed, glitchy bursts. ‘STATE MOTIVE. VACATE. ARK PROTOCOL.’ Mara’s face shows, patched through on fiddletrap, demanding what madness seized them.

Naho races through console hacks. Keito slips to the controls, nerves calm. Kazuo shouts that they come in peace—which nobody seems to trust. Battle edges close, old droid-arms arcing. Did the moon expect people? Is any treasure worth spilling old blood?

Echoes and Awakenings

Louder alarms split the stale hall. Mara’s background hacks spark a breach upstream; she’s bringing Umida in hot. Turrets loose smoke—they have seconds. Kazuo drums buttons, voice rough, ‘Open the Seed Vault! Don’t let all this go for nothing!’

Keito leaps onto control. For once, perfect. The Vault’s memory-door opens. Everything lights around them as the orbs spill into Kazuo’s stunned grip.

The last view before burst exit: the entire lower corridor glowing—awake at last. Memory and present clashing, Ashika opening future words right into their faces, puzzling as any secret ever mapped. Is this what winning feels like?

Days later, Naho grins over synth-noodles, tossing Kazuo the now-decoded seed map. ‘So, where next, Captain?’ Kazuo just stares at the unknown. Sometimes you don’t know who you are till space changes you. ‘Ready to drift again … are you?’

Cliffhanger

The ship slips away carrying new orbs. Ashika’s shadow splits wide—a giant craft stirs beneath the moon’s crust. All that was buried now starts to wake. Are the drifters the spark of something long sleeping? Next call in space comes quick.
