Whisper in the Alley: The Sakamoto Shadow
Episode 1: Sakamoto’s Shadow
Nineteen-year-old Chihiro Arai never paid much attention to urban legends. Her world is data, work, and playlists. When a new rumor stirs among her classmates—whispered chills about ‘Sakamoto’s Shadow’ lurking in a city alley—Chihiro only shrugs. Would you have believed it? She wouldn’t. She’d sooner fear her next midterms.
Supporting cast: There’s Ren Shirai, an earnest friend with more worries than spare time. Ayane Minato, quick-witted and streetwise. Both want Chihiro to quit her late-night walks. They warn her the legend has roots—not just last year’s chain letters, but older lips, older ruins beneath Tokyo streets.
Setup: The Shadow is said to follow those who cut through Sakamoto Alley after the last train passes. If you look back and catch the ‘red eyes,’ trouble finds you for weeks. Missed subways, cracked phones, ruined dates—some say worse. Chihiro jokes about streaming herself in the alley. Ren looks sour.
At night, the city is still a river of lights and trucks. Chihiro heads out for home after her shift, shoes clicking past shuttered shops. Bad WiFi crackles her latest track. There’s a side street ahead—Sakamoto Alley. She glances at her window reflection, takes a deep breath, and steps in with a smirk.
At first, there’s only wind and distant traffic. Cold seeps between dumpsters. Her phone drops signal. Suddenly, a red flash gleams in the dark like tail lights far off. Chihiro halts. Is her mind playing games, or does someone whisper close behind her? She turns—to empty air, broken glass, a dog behind a fence. But her heart still stutters as she nearly stumbles on a glass bottle.
At home, she texts Ayane: “Might’ve seen those ‘red eyes.’ Should I buy holy salt or a security guard?” Ayane doesn’t reply. Should she have texted out of worry, or left well enough alone?
Development: Next morning, Ren finds her at the cafe. “Heard you went through the alley,” he says, eyes narrowed. Chihiro teases him, but she’s groggy. The train ride had odd static, her work files vanished overnight, and now, her keychain turns up bent. Is it that easy for superstitions to claw in? She rubs her arm when no one’s looking.
During class, rumors spark. Hiroki, an upperclassman, refuses to speak after a run-in with Sakamoto’s Shadow. His friends cower. When Ayane finally calls, her voice is raw: “Don’t go out tonight, please. Stay with us until it stops.” Every few hours, Chihiro swears she spots red reflecting in glass, monitors, or subway windows—never for long, but too frequent. Even the campus cats avoid her.
Mid-episode twist: Chihiro seeks out the source, returning to Sakamoto Alley before dusk. Shuttered stalls and faded gates guard the place. As she listens, she hears a distorted voice repeat her phone’s lock code. Her phone’s screen glitches, then dies.
With Ayane and Ren in tow, she faces what comes down the alley. Laughter, echoing from drains. Garbage shudders. There, the red ‘eyes’ flare again—but this time, for too many seconds. Her name echoes with the sound of old train brakes. She freezes, fighting to keep reason above fear.
They run. Ren nearly trips. Back at the exit, Sakamoto Alley is a patch of shadows, blank once more. Settled breath, trembling laughter, but nobody feels safe. Chihiro’s hands are cold yet strangely steady. Has curiosity gone too far tonight?
Cliffhanger: That night, every screen in Chihiro’s room flickers red. Her reflection in the window watches her with steady, empty eyes. Is it over, or is it just getting worse? Would you keep searching, or would you run?
