Echoes of the Fog: The Unsolved Disappearance at Hoshikawa Station

Mizuki Tazawa only likes walking back home late if there’s fog. The mist makes her feel safe—hidden from the world for a little. That night, as the station clock blinks 11:58 and the final train rushes past, the glass doors at Hoshikawa Station seem to shine with more secrets than ever.

Mizuki keeps thinking about her brother Yuto’s disappearance nine years back at this very spot. He’s a thick file in the police station but a thudding sound in her chest that won’t stop. She clutches her old flip phone, whispers, “What’s the truth here, Yuto?” and steps through the automatic doors.

Since starting high school, she’s collected little clues, tall tales, and station staff rumors. Her closest friend Daichi is waiting on a red bench near gate three, eating seaweed chips and feeding some to his pet crow, Sora. Daichi glances up, soft-eyed and serious: “You sure you want to do this again, Mizuki? The tracks are still closed, y’know.” Sora caws, restless.

Mizuki only nods. Her mind’s sharp, her drive unnatural some days, maybe all days. “It’s the only way. That camera near the stairs—the one I found with new scratches. We check tonight.” They plan, quick and quiet, splitting their paths. Mizuki will sneak under the inner platform’s edge, where she saw boot marks two months ago. Daichi, crouched and silent, will loop through the staff lounge to peek at the power breaker. He gets nervous there, and sometimes acts tough, but tonight he’s as pale as the wet tile. He snaps, “Send your stream as soon as you see anything.” Worry knots his voice. Does that sound like someone you know?

Flashlights off, nerves taut: Each has phone, backup charger, Sora’s gps tag around his leg. Mizuki edges to the shadow behind the pillar, just where fog pours slow and thick. Sirens are distant. She feels like everyone’s holding their breath, even the floor. aicg-3086-img-2-6a1ea87936b6a.png

From above, she sees weird lines in the dust. Three long scrapes curve wildly on the yellow safety strip. Daichi’s signal flickers but her heart hammers, “This wasn’t here at 9.” A gust sweeps through. She mouths, “Are you seeing this, Yuto? Did you do this?”

Minutes pass in high-wired quiet. Then: a low hum, soft and old as the tracks. Daichi calls through the line, “Did you move—Wait. There!” Something darker than shadow slips down stairway six, out of camera’s reach. His words come fast: “You see? That coat. That’s Yuto’s coat!” Mizuki dashes forward, heat in her breath, not worried now—just needing answers. Her grip tightens, knuckles white, as she raises her phone lamp.

The signal shudders, dies. “Daichi! Daichi, are you there?” A metallic clang. Boots—so close. Too close. Mizuki spins but no face shows, only movement, always at the corner. She runs, boots loud in the hollow darkness, cursing the night shift for their bad lights and her quick tears.

Sora circles above, squawking. Up on the screen flashes the stored video Mizuki set to record. A slim figure pulls at the old rust locker just past the fuse box, opening it with a badge. Sora, more agitated now, drops something—a thin chain with the club badge Yuto wore. What could the badge mean? aicg-3086-img-3-6a1ea8b319527.png

She grabs the chain in shaking hands just as static fills her audio. The screen glitches; she sees the boy’s head turn, but the frame warps. Has the station always felt like a throat about to swallow her?

Power fades and flips, flickering her lamp on/off. Daichi’s feet pound back, out of breath. “Mizuki—grab Sora—we have to go!”
“Wait! Was that—did you see? Bleached on that locker is Yuto’s name!” She looks right at him, pain and fierce hope crossing her words. He reaches, covers her hand with his.
She stares into the mist outside. “If we found this, why leave? We have proof—almost.”

Daichi shakes. “They shut the station system when it goes like this. They said: anybody here after midnight vanishes too.” He drops this truth in her lap like it’s nothing. Her heart skips around, confusion spreading. “You believe that? That’s kid talk.” Yet she can’t ignore the bruising truth—the air feels thick, heavy—alive.

They step back outside, chains in hand, racing pulse matching city hush. The camera angle, in-store, swings wide as the digital clock rolls to 00:00. A final soft footstep echoes, metal on stone. Somewhere a locker door creaks—a replay of some old horror, maybe a hint of something new.

Mizuki glances at the stream on her busted phone: the figure—her brother or a copy—pauses, almost waves at her, then fades in the flickering fog. Seven missing, now maybe eight. Mizuki vows, broken and bold, “I’m not letting you hide anymore.”

But Sora lets out a last wild yell as the mist rolls in harder. Everything goes white—save one red badge on the ground. The scene pauses here, a tale hung in the wet dark, as the unseen mystery inside Hoshikawa Station deepens into the heavy silence. Where does the missing truth lead them next? Will you think about it next time you catch the last train? aicg-3086-img-4-6a1ea8ef42253.png

Tune in for the next chapter. The station doors never close—not really.
