Veil of Ashes: The Whispering Abyss
Some days, Ashitsu wonders what drove his father away. That dull ache never leaves him. Even in the loudest moments, that question is there.
He doesn’t look anything like the rows of demon boys at his academy in Yama-no-Kuni. His horns are patchy; his magic can’t start a match. He’s laughed at by Rakka, who sits first in every class. Ashitsu doesn’t mind. At least not most days.
He has one thing they don’t: the dim bell, half-buried in red dirt. People whisper it’s cursed. Could it be the answer to his father’s fate, or just a pile of relic junk?
Lona, with her shock of silver hair, joins him at lunch. “You’re staring at the bell again,” she says, flicking her braid. Ashitsu turns it around in his palm.
“Something in it moves, Lona. I heard it last night.”
“Have you ever tried ringing it?” she asks, eyes full of dare.
Ashitsu shrugs. “Don’t want ghosts showing up at my window. Or worse, my mom getting sad.”
A loud bang thuds through the halls. The teachers can’t hide their worry—there’s been more Maw breaches. Old temple seals are coming loose.
Principal Naruk takes Ashitsu aside. “Give it up. Legacy bells turned this town inside out once before. Don’t risk it.” His hand shakes as he fixes his lapel. He leaves before Ashitsu finds a reply.
The bell hums on Ashitsu’s desk. That night, Blue-fire shadows slither in the corners. Weak magic tugs him from sleep. For a moment, a voice, hungry and alone: “Ashitsu, open the second door.”
The story spreads fast the next day. Some say the cracks under Old Wall Street moved again. Ashitsu isn’t scared, exactly, but he thinks he saw his father’s scars glowing blue in his own dream face.
He asks Lona to meet him behind the Academy gate that evening. Fireflies flit between ruined brick and trees with clawed bark.
She arrives holding a string of prayer beads. “I’ve got yours if things go bad.”
He nods. “Let’s pull back the veil, Lona. Just peek.”
They set the bell between moss stones. Ashitsu lifts it. His breath shakes as the first chime falls, weaker than he hoped.
They hear — what? It pulses. For half a second, his hands blur, not skin, not shadow. Patterns shudder in the stone floor. The veil tears. They see teeth—old, slumbering gods below. None have eyes tailored for sunlight.
Lona grabs his sleeve. “We need to stop!”
He chokes her name, then drops the bell. The breach seals a hair-width before leaking light stops. But one blue moth, marked like his father’s rune, slips through before the gap is gone.
Next week’s temple fires turn every mask outward, never letting eyes dip inward. Ashitsu isn’t sure what got through—or why it looked right at him.
Lona doesn’t text back. Each step he takes near midnight, the moth circles closer.
Now, every beast in Devil Lane is howling before sunrise. His mom shouts to fasten shutters tight.
He looks at the bell’s dull rim, hoping for answers instead of regret.
Was his father ever afraid of what he might bring? As the episode ends, Ashitsu opens his window. The moth lands on his palm. It speaks—using his father’s gentle voice. “You rang the bell, Ashitsu. Are you ready for the second door?”
