Satoru Hanabishi, third year and president, loves logic. His voice is clear, but soft. “Let’s start. If you block, you’ll lose the next round.” Across from him, Aika Maezawa, first year, steady hands, cool stare. She never has much to say. Some students want glory. Others—like them—play for another reason. Satoru wants to prove even patterns can break. Aika wants to see if trust trumps control.
Tonight’s match has drawn their friends: Atsushi, who jokes even under strain, and Suzu, who types notes throughout. The rule for the Labyrinth Game is simple, at first. Echo the moves of your opponent for ten turns, but—one false move will bring the game master’s twist. How do you bluff repeat intent, while hiding your tactics?
It’s been three days already. Each night longer, with sleep tossed aside. Now the tricks escalate. Satoru tips his glasses. “Will you follow my move again, Aika?” Aika dabs her lips with a sweet. Shuya leans from the shadowed hall. “These aren’t mind games anymore. This is war.”
Atsushi’s watching the crowd—not the board. “Who really started these mind games?” he prods. Plenty of whispers, and some doubt. But trust is fragile at Nakamori. Rumors ripple through club chats—maybe the seniors keep notes, or maybe the Council pushes them. Satoru shrugs it off. “Want to win on talk, not on skill?” Is that fair?
This week, matches start at dusk. Whoever can’t win by dawn can’t return. Suzu sets up a wall of sticky notes over a stack of games—diagrams everywhere, each sticky hiding some fact. Patterns form if you squint: last year’s president never lost when coffee was involved; Aika always eats a caramel before going for check. Did you notice that?
The rival schools join, looking for a crack. Renji Sada, a masked outcast, offers a deal. Trade solutions. Whispers again shuffle through minds—would you sell your hard-won logic to shield a friend?
All week, faces around the table mix—the mind, not muscle, rules here. Friend or enemy? Only the boldest plan stays hidden long. Darkness collects outside the glass doors. Arguments flare: who exposed the club’s master plans? Was it Renji, or someone closer?
Night five, runner-up Tomo’s shakes, desperate deal. “Pick a move for me, I’ll cover for you with the notes.” Aika turns, soft but piercing: “I’d rather lose with my own hand.” Satoru nods approval, glancing at his cracked watch.
The pieces move closer. Finally, one player slips—a misread note. Everyone pulls back, shocked. The game master appears in shadow, velvet voice. “One move left. But the penalty is trust collapsed.” The club must hold together, or scatter. Most gripping: Satoru and Aika are down to the final game. If one betrays, all names come out.
Satoru whispers: “If you fake left, I’ll call your bluff. But if you trust—us—you’ll find the last piece.” Aika sets her chin: “To win is easy if you live alone. But this room… means we’re not just pieces.” They lock eyes. One final move remains.
