The cold wind slipped under dim street lights as Kazuto Minami pedaled hard through Higashiyama. His friends told him not to check out abandoned Rakuza mall, but that didn’t stop him. Kazuto wasn’t afraid of rumors—and he longed to see the truth behind the famous “Blue Tape Mystery.” That night his story began.
Kazuto’s older sister Nami waited at home, headphones on, lost in the old tales people let slip late at night: about a curious cassette dropped in the darkest, dustiest parts of the city. People said it played strange voices when the clock struck midnight. Some listeners disappeared for good. Is this legend just a wild story, or do you think there’s a kernel of truth to it?
The next day, Kazuto and his best friend Sota meet up after class. Both of them are restless. Sota’s bored, Kazuto itches for answers. Emiko, quick on her feet and sharp-tongued, catches up with the boys at the empty arcade. She’s always been a skeptic, but stories pull even strong minds. “You really think the tape exists?” she scoffs. “On the off-chance I’m wrong, better to know it myself, right?” Sota answers, grinning. They set off for Rakuza as night falls, hiding the worry behind easy jokes.
The mall is shuttered, but a smashed window invites them inside. Their shoes echo along cracked, empty halls. Dust motes dance in the faint light from broken glass. In an old record store, Kazuto finds it—a half-melted blue cassette on a display shelf. He holds it to the light, heart pounding. As midnight draws near, the air grows thick with something his skin can’t shake.
Is it only nerves? Sota plugs in an old player. For a few heartbeats: only static. Then a low, grainy voice sings—a song none can recall. Images creep into their heads that aren’t their own. Someone running in shadows. A child calling for help behind broken doors. The vision shakes them. Emiko yanks the tape, but now Sota insists he needs to know the truth. “If someone is really stuck wondering, we have to help,” he says. The others argue. Who’s being smart here—fight the lure or answer the legends?
What would you do in that moment, faced with the sound twisting your own memories? They split: Emiko storms off out the side exit, but Sota and Kazuto can’t tear themselves from the vision. Sota disappears down a tunnel behind an old storage door. Kazuto follows, desperate. The air grows cooler still. Time frays around them.
Meanwhile at home, Nami waits. She senses something wrong through fuzzy cassette static that plays on the family radio, nobody having pressed play. Old family pictures start to shift on her phone’s screen; background faces blink, mouths moving tiny, searching soundless words. She throws the device and sets out. How long before her tracks are lost too?
Kazuto races deeper and sees Sota frozen, watching a parade of ghostly people. Their mouths keep moving, lips forming fragments of the song, but no eyes meet his own. Kazuto grabs Sota’s wrist and hauls him back—and suddenly they tumble into bright dawn on the street outside the mall. But something is wrong. Emiko’s face stares from missing person flyers across the lot—posted everywhere, her name hand-written, dated years ago. 
Kazuto’s heart refuses to believe. Sota shakes, mumbling the hidden lyrics under his breath—they don’t make sense, and might never really end. Did Emiko slip into the tape’s tune forever, or can Nami pull her back? The legend isn’t over. Did the myth claim a new victim, or leave a clue behind?
The arc ends with the cousins facing the mall entrance at daylight, frightened but determined. Does a single urge—solve or save—risk drawing them closer to whatever made that tape?
