Neon Shadows: Memory Crack

Prologue: Ashes on Chrome

Night smog curls around the neon skyline. Zero Kuno stands on a rooftop. His eyes strip away the layers of glass and steel — this city hides too many secrets for him to sleep easy.

His earpiece crackles. “Is the ghost here yet?” It’s Ilka’s voice — sharp and tired. She’s plugged in downtown. Zero smirks, palm folding over the old, red memory chip in his hand. “This old thing says there’s more truths on the datalines than we like.”

Introducing the Arc: Shifted Identities

Have you ever wondered: if your memories change, are you still the same? In Tek-Shima Night City, legends and lies flow together. Zero hunts for answers about his missing sister, Hana. She’s more shadow than ghost, lost to the city after something wiped every lead from its feeds.

Zero’s allies are few. Ilka — ace slicer, quick with a digital blade, lost her own memories three years ago. Rowe — ex-cop, fired for seeing truths, now trailing Zero like half a mentor, half a guard.

The conflict lands quick, sharp: a new viral hack in the slums is wiping slum kids’ minds blank.

Why? Who profits here?

Episode 1: Deviant Pulse

Deep in a side-pulse club, strobing lights reflect off rain-wet steel. Ilka jams her cracked deck into a hidden access port behind the stage. Zero watches her collect traces, mind spinning. “Three blanked kids last night,” she whispers, showing him each file — names with nothing left behind them but empty doc-tags.

“It’s the ghost again — people call her MaryDream.”

Rowe grunts, sliding an old handgun across the chipped counter. “That myth kills people, Zero. Weigh your moves, kid.”

Zero looks at the memory chip. He knows Hana left these trails. “My sister’s mixed up here — dead or not. I won’t stop.” It’s rain outside. His hand’s shaking. It’s not just the cold.

Case Study: Street Level

Akane, age nine, found last week in Myogi Alley, can’t remember her own name. Her eyes stay hollow. Medical records come up scrubbed — this is not just random street disease. Records and memory links crowdfeeds, yet vanish within hours. Ilka pulls up threads on dev chatlines: wild claims that ghost-code’s zipped into kids only when specific events go wrong. Others talk about unusual flickers in public MEMnet around the same time. Why strike there?

Rowe runs data against police blackout times. Results line up fast. “It’s pro work,” Rowe mutters. Zero’s teeth grit. “This started the week Hana disappeared.”

Zero dials up Hana’s vox mail but gets nothing but static, bin-code roars, and a single digit: 7.

Expert Insight: Rakkon’s Memory Slate

Hard-bit yak leader Rakkon floats info to the team — maybe to mess with them, maybe to help. He’s loud, scary, and always chewing thorn-caps for show.
“Memory hacks, you know?” he says one night in a faded bar. “Tek mnemonics don’t wipe for fun. Someone wants to patch the past. Kids? Pattern breakin’ is old as sand — tests, crashes, or payback.”

Ilka scans basecode left after a wipe — same glitch she saw near her lost day. Rakkon grins, teeth like coin. “Who do you trust with your mind, streetrat?” he laughs. “Yourself? Don’t kid yourself, Zero.” Is trust even worth it here?

They zero in on floor four of the HiveStack. Issa Tek weapons lab sits there, records say. Hana ran jobs for them once.

Development: Thread and Chase

Zero and Ilka break in during rain, skipping slow, blinking beasts on sentry patrol. The HiveStack lifts up like a pillar — fifty levels of waste and glow, drones and grey jackets everywhere. Zero almost gets trapped in a ripple-jammer field. A soft voice comes over wide comms: “Another worm in the wire…” It’s MaryDream. Is it an AI? A real hacker? Ilka glances at Zero. “She’s tracking us.”

They reach the lab. Die-marks across the walls show last night’s fight. The memory extractor, marked LUNA-PROCESS/713,’s dripping old stock napth-gel down the tables. Hana’s data — some of it — sits on a backup. Ilka snags a core and shoves out an alarm. They run.

“Did you hear brother?” a choked whisper drips through the intercom. “The city forgets.”

Zero’s hand goes limp holding the old chip. Ilka yells, “We’re not alone!”

Do you wonder who’s behind your own locked memories? How much have you chosen not to see?

Scene Impact: Memory Locked, Futures Fractured

The group cracks the drive in a damp hideout pipe, muffled by six levels of echoing sprawl. The crackling logs playback Hana’s voice — frantic, scared. She stutters coordinates, safe keys, a warning: “Don’t patch to MaryDream. It infects systems!

Ilka drifts. “She knew. She tried to fix it.” Rowe runs the number 7 again. Access gets flagged. The room dims as IF lights cut out.

An obsidian drone slides, lasers aimed. A slow, painful siren trickles through the wall chips. Comm goes dead. Zero’s pulse spikes. This isn’t just a digital war now.

They may not see the sunrise if they mess up here.

Cliffhanger: The Five Gates Protocol

The files pull up a phrase: Five Gates Protocol — never signed, never published. Linked, somehow, to every blanked kid. All of them but one spotted underground at the edge of the Shiro Aoi tunnels.

MaryDream’s signal bursts through Zero’s mind. “Choose. Give back what was taken, and keep forgetting. Or take everything and lose who you are.”

The floor splits as night runs heavy above, memory and shadow folding over the team. Zero grips Hana’s memory chip. Dawn leaks through vents in purple neon thread.

Will Zero give up his last clue about Hana? Will Ilka risk lost pieces? Is forgetting safer than the truth you find there?
