Fragments in the Mirror: The Spirals of Akane

From the hour a slanted sun stains the morning, Akane Tsuzuri wakes uneasy. Mirrors line her walls. Every surface shows her face but something’s off each time. The left cheek rises a touch lower or eyes that don’t blink quite right. She presses her palm to glass. Her reflection stares back almost real—except it grins when she frowns.

Have you ever watched yourself smile when you felt nothing at all? Akane, shy at school, sharp-tongued at home, holds secrets wound tight. She doesn’t speak to her friends about the Archive, a midnight web forum filled with strangers asking about lost memories and hidden rooms. Tonight, a new message flashes bright:

“DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE MORNING?”

Akane’s eyes flick to her clock. 2:03 AM. The shadows bunch under her desk. She blinks; all is still. The message, signed by Lupin#44, haunts her. Why?

This thread loops for days. Each user tied to missing stretches in their past, sharing dreams where thick fog crawls through old city tunnels, threading lives together that shouldn’t touch.

Her brother Koji swears it’s game only sickos play. He brags, “Don’t go near it, sister. Fake names. Bots stirring up cowards with wild tales.” Yet he looks right, looks her in the eye longer than he used to, and asks, “Do you hear voices at night now?”

One lunch break, Akane finds classmate Ryuu by the window, staring at nothing. He dyes his hair green odd days, flirts for attention, but today he sags. “I lost four hours. Only I remember Thursday. The water tasted burnt. Akane, do we still live in the same world?”

The two start recording voices they hear waking from sleep. Static, threaded with faint words, filtered through an app Ryuu wrote. They listen, braced. “…turn…replace…echoes…don’t look…” Koji sneaks up, mouth set in a long, flat line, and gathers the tapes in the dead of night. By dawn, the tapes are gone. Akane finds only a silver coin and a scrap of wax-wrapped glass.

At the edge of reason, she starts seeing herself—her own body, caught reflected in dark screens and pools, stepping out of place with her soul. Once, slipping down the wood stairs, she pauses in half-lit fear. The TV off, yet her face peers bright on the glass. It lifts a finger she hasn’t moved. One mirror fragment shifts away on its own, showing not her—but Koji’s wound cheek, when a bad fall broke it soft and strange at age eight. Only he should remember. Did they swap places? Who else lost track of the line between past and now?

A rumor from Satsuki, a soft girl said to sleepwalk, brings a clue. She begs Akane, “Beneath the brass bridge, lights walk at three in the morning. My lost puppy—he lives down there in the work tunnels.”

After a week of odd dreams, the trio returns to the bridge after midnight. Chill fog streaks the night. The city feels brittle. Mirrors in old store fronts are dusted but some flash clean when Ryuu passes, although each gives the wrong time. Satsuki leads, clutching one thick black notebook and a tarnished locket. Inside the old train access, lost stairs reach down. Murky water slaps footing. “It’s warm here,” Satsuki says. Is she right?

Knees trembling—Ryuu almost bails, but Akane grabs him. “What’s the worst that bites? A slug? Mice? Or our own half-dreaming faces?” It isn’t dark as expected. Thin bulbs line parts of the ceiling under glass domes.

They find other things: scribbles on tunnel bricks, words bleeding into colors, clay jars muttering with a tape playing backwards inside, high on a gap in the wall with drips collecting below. Satsuki hisses, “They know we’re real.”

What urges ease or dread in memory holes? She fingers her locket, grabs Akane, whispers low: “Wake up when you see your tooth under water.” Ryuu lags, taping each odd spark, though what later shows is half his face merged with Satsuki’s. The mural behind them doesn’t fit any city wall they know.

Let’s shift quicker—pulse drums. Something hit glass. Light in the jar winks blue then folds on itself. The mirror on the tunnel floor glitches—reliving scenes they all had shrugged off: Akane sends Koji to look for their lost ball but never found him; Satsuki’s lost puppy curled up in a bed she never owned; Ryuu watches a sunset that turns right back to noon when he closes his eyes.

Fast steps further. Voices cluster. The reflection in the puddle stacks odd—three, four faces; none match. Akane steps closer, whispering, “Did you ever wish you could start yesterday again?” The slippery truth breaks across their pooled feet.

Clatter behind—it’s Koji. Out of breath, eyes twitching at any edge, a silver coin in his fist, glass shards in tinged fingers. “I found the start,” he says, voice two tones too deep. “We swap at dawn. No one leaves with their own skin.” Lupin#44’s voice emerges through his lips: “For every secret fed to the mirror, one memory must die.” Is this body still Koji? Who’s behind the grin now facing Akane?

The group realizes there may be more trapped with them or worse—more versions about to take hold above. Ryuu touches a reflection and his twin laughs back in a different voice. Someone outside breaks the world with a loud clang, as if signaling a wake-up call that’s too late to heed. The jar shatters, ink spreads on the floor, and Akane’s own shadow moves as if to grasp her hand.

It ends as Akane reaches for her lost tooth in the puddle. Her reflection opens its mouth, but the voice echoed inside isn’t hers—it’s a warning, the sound of daytime upside down. Is it better to know truth or to forget and be happy?

The “Fragments in the Mirror” arc keeps twisting. What’s the price for regaining lost time? Who in the group holds their same soul by the end? Would you want to trade a painful past for a missing shard of yourself, if it meant someone else revival in your place?
