Shadow in the Alley: The Whisper Game
Episode Synopsis
There’s this rumor flying through Sazanami Town. They say if you walk down Nigai Alley alone after midnight, you’ll hear a voice whisper your deepest wish. Teen friends get drawn to this story for much different reasons. The rumor has stuck online, too — the town’s version of scary story threads have blown up about it. Is it just a trick to scare kids? Or could it be real for someone who dares listen?
Izumi Aoi wants to know. Quiet, sharp, not prone to scares, he hears whispers even in class. Those are about his dad, a well-known ghost hunter who vanished chasing some local myth. Izumi skips club — camera in his backpack. Who believes these stories anymore, anyway? His best friend Yuki thinks they’re dumb. Yuki wants a dare. That’s fine, because something’s rattling Izumi’s nerves this week. As usual, Shou shows up just to mock anyone’s fears while Minato tags along next. The four walk up to the alley, flashlights swinging. “Let’s get this over with,” Minato yawns.
It gets cold. Fast. Izumi’s phone dies as they step past the rusted street sign. That never happened before. Street cats scatter as steps echo in the empty alley. No wind tonight. No dogs barking.
So: where are those leaves rustling from?
Yuki’s phone captures flickering movement only their screens catch. Three calls cut out in a row. Shou rolls his eyes, coloring tough. Reckon you’d stand your ground here, reader?
They’re not even all inside the alley when Minato squeaks. There’s a low hum… and a broken streetlamp’s shadow shimmers and grows. Someone whispers, close but not close: “What’s your wish?” Story has it, you never tell. Or it comes true, but twisted. Izumi’s voice shakes. He whispers his wish. Only Yuki hears: “Bring him back.” Everyone freezes. Even Minato, making a face.
The shadow peels away from the lamp, crawling down the wall. Shou tries to shine his phone in its face. Nothing, just sharp cold and dark. Silence, except that strange breathing. Rumors grew out of tales kids made to explain things that didn’t make sense at home. Everyone in Sazanami has some story about who went down that alley and heard what they didn’t want.
That’s when a door slams three homes down. No one in sight — but Izumi’s phone ghosts on, displaying an odd text: ‘He waits behind the door.’ Mingled audio static filters through the group’s comms. Data point: static, shadows, alleys — did you ever catch your own town’s secret?
Izumi decides to open the forbidden gate at the alley’s end. Who wouldn’t try? Inside: a tight set of slick steps leading into strangely new brick. Whispers surround the crew. None match each other’s voices anymore. Who’s talking now?
The friends spot words scrawled on the wall. Izumi touches them; they smear odd, damp in the cold. Suggested ingredient: ash. The whispers build. Then everyone’s startled — Izumi sees a shape that wasn’t there, wearing his dad’s jacket. It doesn’t reach for him, it only holds up a note: ‘You’re late.’
Cliffhanger? Izumi’s heart cracks; the shadow moves silent. The screen cuts to black. Is the urban legend real, or did the crew make something worse?
