Crimson Chalk: The Pencil Duel Saga
Episode Arc: Crimson Chalk – The Pencil Duel Saga
Are you ready for a story that starts with a simple note but sparks a war that turns the whole class upside down? If not, now’s the time to buckle up. Yuto Mizukawa is always early, counts the number of tiles from the gate to class, almost never tardy. He’s not the only one with perfect scores: Sora Hanabira sits two rows behind him and keeps breaking his classroom records. Long silent glares have passed between them, though the bell sets their rivalry in motion day after day.
It was a peaceable Thursday until their math teacher decided to try something new. “Pair up for the big Calculus Showdown! Top pair gets front row at the school festival, and two movie tickets. Second runners eat lunch duty for a month!” Chaos, right? Nope. It was Yuto and Sora who looked around and, realizing each other’s skill, decided: no matter what, they can’t end up partners.
It never crossed Yuto’s mind that dip below one of them wasn’t the only odd thing in the class this year. Enter Izumi Kawashima. Far too eager, manga magazines spread under her desk, sharp tongue, and ambition to make school more fun. She wrangled herself between Yuto and Sora while their friends lined up beside other partners.
Sora dropped her pencil—on purpose—and sighed, so the teacher would notice it was dropped. Did Sora do that for sympathy? Or to bait Yuto further? “Thinks he has every answer, doesn’t he?” Izumi teased above a whisper.
Maybe you know a person like Yuto: needs to win, just so everyone else won’t. The room feels stiff even as friends around him crack jokes. Kazuki, his laid-back friend, whispered, “Don’t let her get in your head.” Sora’s pal Ayane cut her eyes at Yuto and smirked. Here’s an anime scene you’ve seen set up before—but is your school rival really the motivator, or is there deep pride begging to be dealt with?
The first round shoots by: numbers, logic, all snappy. Sora slides her answer paper under her hand, locks her eyes with Yuto. The math teacher walks their row and mutters, “Who’ll fumble first?” Even the teacher wants the show. Will you root for the one who’s too eager, or the one who won’t stop even for a break?
Lunch rolls in. There’s no sense of ease. Yuto eats alone with notes spread wide. On the balcony, Sora lays back, grins as her classmates joke about the ‘undeclared cold war.’ Izumi runs between, hinting she swapped answer keys in the teacher’s office. Yuto chokes, “Did you just say what I think?” Kazuki catches this: “Do you two want to lose to a comic reader?”
The drama ramps up after lunch. Second round. A real, tricky set. Problem twelve: no quick tricks, no simple solution. Yuto steals a glance and finds Sora working fast. Under the seats, Izumi quietly drops a pencil, hard. Both Sora and Yuto go silent—watchful, as if waiting for a cheat move. Would you have focused on your answers, or tried to edge into the fray outside the test?
A showdown at the board now. The teacher draws two points: tie scores. “Solve this for us live. Winner takes all!” It’s theater. It’s every episode ending with a cracked smile or quipped threat. Yuto and Sora step up, chalk in hand. You hear only squeaks and scribbles. Do you ever get that shaking hand when the grade matters to more than just you?
Izumi leans into Kazuki, whispers, “Placed my bet on her this time.” Red chalk dust coats the black board. Fractions line up, marks fly. Sora hardly breathes. Yuto closes his eyes before each bold step in his long formula. In a pause, Sora says under her breath, “My turn for the front row, isn’t it?” Yuto lifts his chalk. All eyes lock in.
The slowdown happens. Kozue-sensei, usually so mild, stares with an almost gleeful glint in her eye. The clock ticks louder. Friends hold their breath—today’s winner sets the social order for autumn. Rhythms skip, erasers drop. Did you ever fumble, just as the prize was in reach?
Numbers cover the board’s width. A gasp: Sora finds a mistake—not hers, but Yuto’s. It hangs until Sensei reads the line aloud: wrong sign, small but fatal. Will Yuto force his way back? Can Sora really topple the old ranks, or is there one last twist?
The room’s hush breaks only as Sora quietly writes her final answer—and seals the round. Izumi springs up with a wild cheer, Kazuki actually smiles for once. Through the windows, the sun slants sideways. But in the back corner, there’s a look on Sora’s face that says this is only round one. Yuto balls his paper up, but says nothing. You’ve seen moments like these yourself, haven’t you? The early rivalry is just prologue.
The episode ends not with everyone leaving happy, but Sensei lifting another stack: “Teams, new rivals next week. Prize doubled.” All stare. Who’ll be the next challenger? Credits slide over Sora slipping a crimson chalk into her bag—and Yuto walking out, quietly grinning. To be continued.
