Dragonstorm: The Ember Pact (Arc 1-3)
Aric Endo can’t stand living as a nobody in his mountain home. Out here, people shun him just for being rash. One tiny act is the reason: his grandfather vanished with a red jewel, leaving shadow and pain. The town whispers. Aric grits his teeth every day, holding down his anger. But he wants answers. Why blame him?
He finds escape in old caves above Orin Valley. That’s where he meets Maiza, a reticent herbs-keeper, and Kall, their giant bronze mastiff, both scouring cracks for rare bellwort. Maiza only smiles with half her mouth, ticking on unseen clocks. Kall just snorts at new folk. Are these people running from stories too?
Sun turns and the caves grow cold. One night, red lamps flash from under the rocks. Shrill bell roars slice the wind. The party runs into derelict lizard bones — then torchlight glints across fresh scales. A dragon — living — blocks the way out. Not just any beast, either. It’s small, battered, but breathing radiance. Its name, choked out by smoke, is Caelian. Makes you wonder: how long’s it been hiding here?
“Stop!” Maiza yells as Aric darts forward. Kall lunges, tail smacking the cave roof. Above, rocks tremble.
“What are you hoping to find?” Maiza snaps.
“I need to— I have to ask it— about my grandfather,” Aric wheezes, facing the small dragon as it sizzles in low light.
Your heart would skip right now, right? What would you do in his shoes? Run, or reach out to the strange beast?
Caelian growls words in broken chants: Earth, Fire, Ash, Pact. The beast’s eyes latch on Aric — recognition. It seems the jewel, the one from Aric’s family, was key to a fading oath with the dragon’s kin, stolen one moonless night. Clues spill out, never in full: the jewel, “Emberkiss”, warms the link between two realms. Still, now the dragons decay. Tension deepens: other wings stalk the trees — enemies? Or maybe rivals?
Maiza tugs Aric back: ”We’re here for greens, not ghosts.” Kall presses between the humans and dragon, covering them with wide jaws. It nearly devolves into blows, before Caelian slumps from old wounds, scales flaked raw. Old loses to youth, sometimes.
“Help me,” Caelian gasps, “or spark ends. Dragon line— last thread.”
The group debates. Maiza’s gaze lingers on the broken scales. Should they risk everything to reforge that bond? Or should they leave the dragon to fate? Who else might bend the dragon’s will if they turn away now? The group pulls together a plan. First, they’ll sneak into the valley’s fallen watchpost—known for odd tracks. There, signs point to poachers channeling this lost power.
Not all in town are what they seem. Shopkeeper Ren towers with glittering coins; he’s watching them too close. He tells tales about a “Serpent King”, unseen under winter storms. Aric suspects Ren’s hiding a link. But not even Maiza trusts him fully.
Alla, a smith’s kid, comes into the tale. Bright eyed, short hair, tough hands. They admired Aric once, now break into fights with him for petty reasons. Conflict boils even within the group. Why do some people fear old magic, do you think? What makes townsfolk blame others so fast?
Inside the watchpost, tracks lead below stones. Aric gropes through long tunnels, Maiza taps soot and soil. In the light, Alla’s torch flickers across chains — with claw marks burned across iron links. Two shapes flit at the edge. Aric stifles a curse as the air thickens. Out of a broken grate, three goat-beasts spill with hooked shadows – not dragons, but hungry old crossbreeds, loose from someone’s pen.
Kall blocks a goat-beast’s charge; Maiza belts an herb dust, burning their eyes. Battle is sharp and close, iron versus horn. Every move is desperate. Yet in the muddle, they find scrawled on the wall, half scuffed, odd sigils. Aric feels the jewel’s pulse in his pocket — he’s been gripping it since Caelian’s plea.
“You took Emberkiss again,” Maiza murmurs, eyes sharp.
“It was always mine,” Aric mutters, voice rough. Is he turning into the problem, or is he righter than anyone thinks?
Pressed from both sides, the group chooses to trust Caelian. They drag him from the caves, avoiding the poacher trails by starlight. That night, at camp, Aric inspects the wound; Maiza treats it, whispering in old tongue. Kall stands sentry, yellow eyes trailing the dark like lights.
“You need family?” Aric asks.
“Only hope, pactboy,” Caelian pants. “With ember, rise. Without, ends.” There’s bitterness in the old dragon’s tone — regret over old betrayals, or simple fear?
The next step is a ritual on the peak where the dragons once circled each storm. If this works, maybe a line revives; if not, something much fiercer might wake.
Dawn. Wind rips the last clouds. The group limps to the rim. Maiza plants talismans, Alla hammers root bundles on each point, following ancient marks. Caelian’s chest heaves purple smoke.
The scene grows tense. Local poachers close in behind – arrows ready, faces masked. Someone blows a twisted horn. Does Ren’s tall shape flicker among them, or just blur behind the edge? Aric fumbles the jewel, doubting now. “Am I saving us, or putting it all in danger?”
“Trust old walls and bitter fire. Give or break, boy,” Caelian mutters.
Aric sighs, then presses the Emberkiss to the dragon’s chest. Light crawls up scales like dawn. The air crackles. Beyond the ring, a second beast calls in rage. Something that never wanted peace is on them now.
The episode jags to black before the clash: will Aric’s trust pay off? Will the betrayed bond revive the dragons—or doom them all?
