Veil Over Velonia: The Tractor Heist Files

Fog hugs the quiet city of Velonia. High towers punch into gray, like pens drawn by a bored god. Morning buzz finds Arata Kaiso, junior detective, asleep on his file-strewn couch, half a slipper missing. A power cut, lost keys. Another Friday, right? Or is it time for something more?

Grab your drink and pull up a seat. Do you think cities ever keep real secrets?

His alarm, a battered phone, goes loud at six. Kaiso groans. “Chief’ll bark again—” he says, kneading his temple, late for the third day. Still dreaming, the dream with derailed trains and headless mannequins in the city’s market, before another job call jars him awake. The caller is Mari Inoue: “Kaiso. You’ll want to see this. Out at Kitano Street. Bring coffee?”

A crime—the city blinks awake but not as usual. Velonia’s wonky icon—a ten-meter vintage red tractor, winner of the 1962 world’s slowest race, gone during the lunch hour in broad daylight. Only a carton of warm dumplings and a bright yellow glove left in its place. How’s that even possible?

Was the thief a pro, a ghost, or an amateur with a big car? Kaiso steps onto cracked cobble. Feathering mist drips on his shoes. He squints as birds take off. Mari bounces, tapping her pen to her pad. Nearby, uniformed officers gamely try to look useful.

Mari grins, eyes sharp. “Think our thief’s got style. Blunt cut—see the curb mark? Took skill, or strong nerves. Their entry’s clean. Lock picked; no glass. Left the dumplings. Year-old red paint on the glove.”

“This gets weirder every time,” Kaiso says, running numbers in his head. “Fan club doing a stunt? Or does this mean something?” In the background, a child tugs on his mom’s hand, asking about missing tractors and secret cars. Someone’s dog sniffs the curb.

Saeki Ryo, their super, slides in behind them. Heavy tan coat, navy scarf, and the vibe of a guy who pays double for bad coffee. “This is political, right? Farmers’ week, out of all weeks. Eggheads upstairs flagged data from nearby cams.” He blinks, rubbing his nose with two knuckles. “City PR’s breathing down our necks.”

The city puts on its armor at night, but problems break in even in daylight. Kaiso does his rounds at the scene—flat strip of red on curb, tarp scrap, battery acid spill a meter away. Deer-shaped grooves cut into the soft wet ground in the lot up back. The air holds garlic and spilled oil.

While police look at camera clips, Kaiso scans, head down. He’s looking for footsteps. But a veiled figure, light on their toes, points to another strange mark behind a truck—an “X” in white chalk.

Through crowds, word flits fast. Insta fans begin retelling it already: “Did the Great Red Monster just leave? Dim-witted guards, perfect getaway!” Sounds like you’ve heard these stories too. Have you?

Mari elbows him. “This reminds me of Emiko the Fox-masked Carjacker. She left on samba night in ’21. Signature: warm food left for luck.” Kaiso jots, drawn in. His face hardens.

“Checking hospitals. If it’s Emiko, she tips off old docs. That mark looks like a mob sign. Turf war, maybe? Gangs moved some brown market gear last March,” he says, low.

They circle the scene. Locals talk but say little. Mamoru Kubo, food seller, tells them his camera saw nothing weird: “Tractor wobbled, then silence. Silver van drove past. No fuss.” Another suggests the city itself wanted to get rid of the odd eyesore.

The Chief bursts onto the block mid-question, hollering: “Got anything yet? The mayor is at my throat!” Mari mutters, “You look tired, Chief.” Kaiso scribbles details, quiet. His anger fuels him, but is there purpose here?

At HQ, video reports finally matter. “See this?” Mari says, showing the frame where the silver van parks five meters from the tractor. Out step two people: both in overalls, faces shadowed by old straw hats. In the reflection on the van’s side window, the tip of a fox mask glints. Emiko? Or copycats playing games?

The youngest analyst at the station, Yuzu, pipes up. She runs image match on the masks and links them to a stack of cases all over the region—urban thefts where odd clues painted a route north. Red tractor missing. Now white vans drive out of town each time, sometimes south, sometimes east. Do you wonder why all the big hits come when crowds are busy?

Kaiso starts building a chart. Wall plastered with pins and cutouts, printouts old and new, and red thread cross-hatching a spiral. Someone is mapping something much bigger. Data from license plates gives nothing—seven fakes, one match leads to the river wasteland.

Late, they all eat cold sushi at their desks, eyes sore. “Two suspects, same masks, tasty food left—echoes,” Yuzu yawns. “All while hundreds walked right by them. They like to be noticed, but don’t want to talk.”

Midnight. Someone attempts a call from a public device. Words distort in static: “Stop the show before it ends.”

Next day, tips rage in from markets and local fans. Mari and Kaiso cross the city twice. Finally, in a quiet courtyard overlooked by old fire escapes—they find red paint flakes, an old bike basket, and dropped car keys. Hear that off-tone bell? Mari is certain. “Close…”

They stake out as fog drips in and day falls. Down the alley, an engine whines. The missing tractor roars to life, lights like bulbs, the paint zero-red. A fox mask looms out of steam. Then Emiko–or their lookalike—locks eyes with Kaiso over the rim of the mask. Silence. Is she a myth or a joke? She tosses the key in a white bag and speeds off, leaving downtown dizzied as ever.

Was Emiko caught on purpose? Mari wants to hunt. Kaiso rules in quiet: “She wants us to chase. Can we afford it, or will the trick get stale and eat our pride?”

On his late ride home, Kaiso stares down at the chalked “X” again. There’s a hole in the middle. Letters curl out: “Veil lifts at the Square.”

He turns back to the city. “Are you watching us back? What’re you fighting for?”

Who do you think Emiko really is—a thief, a joker, or just bait for a bigger game?

The next episode waits in the wings, shadow growing under cobbled stones. Bags packed, boots on, city blinking. Kaiso gets his coat. But outside, in the cold, another “X” unfolds at the heart of Central Square.

This time, it glows neon. Showdown, ready—or are Kaiso and Mari just galloping into another ghost story’s front gate?

Fog, foot-chase, secret cities, fox mask, threads to cut.

Lights flick and voices dance in the fog—who’s the hunter, who’s the fox? The camera zooms tight on Kaiso’s eyes: hope, fear, or something neither.

Cliffhanger. Credits flare up, echoing across rooftops.
