The Call to Green
A thick fog flows over the kingdom at dawn. In a cramped house sits Kai Igarashi, sixteen, slouched over his battered sketchbook. Deep in thought, the lines of the old shipwreck he draws match the gnaw in his chest for answers buried deep. His older sister, Aoi, sets rice on the table. “Found your dream last night?” she asks, eyelids heavy. He just grins, flashes his battered map. She flicks his forehead. He yawns. “It’s not a dream, it’s where I belong. The jungle makers are calling.” Do you remember the feeling you get when adventure calls?
Tune of Lost Ages
Kai shows the map at the market square. Three faces join him. Lara Ampai, just moved from the border, eyes always reading more than expected. Jin, loud, quick fists, but soft when music plays. His dog, Raku, wags his tail—no words, but loyal always. “If the jungle sings,” Jin says, “let’s hear it ourselves.” Lara checks her compass, nods at the sun high above.
Into the Hushed Jungle
The path cuts quick from steam to drip. A green hush. Every footfall drowns in loam. Birds cackle, vanishing into leaf-thick gloom. Up ahead, half-sunk stones show tilting words. Raku sniffs. Lara pushes vines. “Old clan runes, see here?” she asks, crouching close. A symbol, an ouroboros. Jin bumps Kai. “Looks like your picture yesterday.” Kai rubs his neck. He feels it too. Did you ever follow a symbol you only half-understood? 
Tales in the Dark
Midway in, roots tangle tight, scraping boots raw. Night falls faster than they guessed. They camp by choked streams, trade tales. Jin pokes fire. “You hear of Serpent Folk?” he asks, voice low. Jason says the snakes talk, guard ancient halls. Lara frowns—she’s heard it as a warning. “Some girls ventured in, vanished after. Nobody pokes the heart and gets answers back.” Kai’s not sure what’s scarier: monsters, or not knowing at all.
Chasm and Song
Dawn shows trees twisted around a bottomless gap. Notes echo up—soft, unforgiving, knots in air. Jin cocks his head. “Music—hear that?” Lara glances back, but Kai’s already crossing a mossy bridge with Raku. Vines stretch. Boards creak. Down below in the burn of shadows, a shimmer moves. Voices twist—some calling, others begging to stay away. Something’s not natural. Who do you trust when the jungle itself speaks?
Clash of Myths
Across the chasm, lights flicker from tunneled stone. Shields line the wall. Faces, snake-coiled, carved in old wood. Jin steps near and a trap snaps—an arrow buried in a cedar beam. He laughs once, but stops fast as scales flicker at the edge. A shadow slides out. Lara drops to cover, Jai shakes. Kai whispers: “We came to ask—what do we owe you?”
Serpent Voices
The Serpent elders emerge, voices echo. “Humans always dig. Always lost.” They hiss, yet the oldest offers a riddle. If they solve it, truth and safe passage both; fail, the price is their memories. It’s ancient. Lara bites her lip; her father used to tell her riddles just like it. Raku looks ready to bark. Jin aims to fight or run. Kai motions for them to hold. It’s his moment—what would you gamble for old truth?
The Choice-Root
At last, a root splits the ground—a test, the elders judge worth by stories offered in trade. Aoi’s voice haunts Kai. “Bring your own truth or bring nothing home.” He speaks from the heart, rough and rushed. It’s family. It’s duty. Jin says music. Lara lists names she lost to the wilds. The elders weigh each word as if steel. 
Legacy of the Elder
One serpent chooses to help. He leads them to the heart: singers, coiled around runes, humming—preserving dead tongues. Secrets, old gods, promise and curse. Inside, masks hang; one looks like Kai’s sketch, before he drew it. Why? The serpent points: “The first pack always returns, though in new faces.” Their story is part of the jungle whether they win or withdraw.
Cliffhanger: Down in Shadows
A chime from the deep caves rolls up, all the old notes merged, clear and too bright. Raku barks as a deep tremor shakes the floor. Cracks spider. Stones fall. Kai, staring at the marked mask, feels something sharp: he’s being watched—not just by elders, but by something older still. Behind him, a hand (not human, not serpent) reaches for the same mask. The tune builds to a new key—but snap, the light dies—
Their voices echo in the black. “Are you still there?”
