Synopsis
Midsummer air always carried secrets through the old halls of Aozora Academy. But last Friday, just after dusk, something different happened. Kaito Hoshino, a transfer he hated being called mysterious, found he’d lost an hour he could not recall. The clock on his phone skipped right over it. Monday came, but whispers hadn’t faded. Some say six students vanished in that lost hour. Kaito’s friends, Haru and Misaki, scoffed when he confessed. Yet their eyes avoided him in class, betraying worry as rumors spread that time itself warped within school walls.
Objects found in strange places, full blackouts, whispers drifting the halls. Plot holes lined up, but for Kaito, doubting mean denying himself. “Someone reset their phone for a trick,” said Haru in the music room, picking at his guitar but never striking the string. But when Misaki spoke, her words tumbled: “Kaito…show us.”
So, at midnight under shooting stars, the trio tried returning to the class from which ‘time was stolen.’ The bell tolled. Kaito reached for the old door handle—deeper shadows curled about his hand, prickling ice down his skin.
With the clock hands whirring backwards, Kaito sensed others moving in that space, too. Lost voices sang a jumbled song, old words looping back, never reaching meaning. From the chalkboard, dim lights spilled symbols he’d never willed his eyes to see. Before he could study them, a pale woman—her hair sodden with rain—crossed his path.
Misaki stepped back, gripping Kaito’s coat. “Don’t let go,” she told him. “My feet… they’re cold—like inside water. Don’t you feel it?”
Haru swatted at thin air. Chill wind circled, lights blinked, once-familiar faces warped into visages lit by fear.
Most nights, people would run. Why didn’t anyone fret that they’d sleep through school, or get locked out before dawn? Are you the sort who’d trace ghostly echoes, given one silent hour to track where missing students drift? Misaki began sketching marks she claimed showed on the old desks—the very marks rumored from missing personnel records stored deep within the school archives. If true, why hide staff lists? Wouldn’t that backfire?
Next blood-washed hour, as time wound tighter, a pocket clock blared in wild reply—a warning. Doors slammed shut. Kaito dragged his friends farther into faded halls, past an unraveling map, their own steps trailing back on themselves. Ahead, an unknown classmate stood—one from those abandoned lists—waiting with a cruel little smile, holding a list…with their names.
An old PA crackled: “Remain in place. Hour Zero commences.” But unseen hands pressed the group forward. The pale woman—her hair pooled like rain—held her finger to pursed lips, warning silence. Who cast this spell? For what reward? Their hands grew numb from old, damp chill. Haru’s flashlight danced across spray painted warnings. Each word pointed…not out, but deeper within. Behind a classroom wall, lab doors shifted, creaked, like someone breathing.
The clock on Kaito’s phone struck the very minute he’d blacked out that Friday. A bolt shot down—was this their chance, or the hour to say goodbye? With one last glance at names on a page, breath fogging, the trio stepped into the heart of Hour Zero. What, or who, would be left when time lurched again?
