Post-Apocalyptic Survival

Ashes of Tomorrow: Seeds for the Lost

Hot wind sweeps over black earth. Charred buildings scrape the sky. It’s been nine years since the world fell. The lucky talk as if the days before all burned away like a dream. Our story follows Riku, a boy with sharp green eyes and a dark, jagged streak in his hair. He walks what was once a road, brown boots made from old tire lines slapping flat concrete.

Riku isn’t alone. Near the shell-black bridge stands Mai, her curly hair tied with red ribbon. She kisses a cracked compass, voice shaking. ‘If this points home, maybe my brother’s ghost will rest.’ Riku looks at her and shrugs. He’s planned his run for months—food, water, routes, reasons. Haunted faces, missed friends, words he’s lucky to forget. That compass is junk, he wants to say. Still, he keeps it in his note: Find lost things, keep Mai safe.

Ever meet someone who changes your mind without asking? It’s this way for him. Still, hunger stabs any romance before it sparks. Have you ever eaten moss because it’s green, just to see if you’ll get sick?

The ashes carry old bones. This day, Riku and Mai head for Old City Center. Ruins, traps, trespassers—none seem as bad as waiting for decay. They pass rotted swing-sets and rusted cars powdered in pale ash. Near the steps to the metro, Kari and Goto stand guard, battered plates stitched inside coat sleeves. Friends for three years, their help has always come with food. Now trust costs comfort, and there are more take-against than give.

Mai breaks the tense start. ‘Riku. Will you really do it this time? Will you find food, or…’ She lets the word die. ‘Run again?’

‘We’ll do both,’ he says. ‘We have no choice.’

Call that hope. If it stings, maybe it’s still real. The metro is a coat of shadows. Dark, but not silent. A buzz hums deeper inside: voices or something much worse?

Led by Riku, they descend. Light stabs through grates. Kari glances over her shoulder always. Goto taps on pipes, checking—twice beaten by thieves, he won’t take a third hit. They spot old cans. Riku touches them, hearing a soft clink. He mouths a dry joke about beans older than the heat outside. No one laughs.

Their breath clouds, it’s that cold under the city skin. Do ruined tunnels hide wolves or men? Loud footfalls echo. Suddenly, someone drops onto the tracks from above—a stranger, white body paint and rag scarf, wielding what might’ve once been a rod. ‘Who goes further dies,’ says the mask. Not a threat—it’s more of a tired promise.

Mai holds her broken compass tight. ‘My brother’s dog tag is past here,’ she whispers. Riku shifts. Does he lead on, risk the group’s necks again for May’s fading hope?

Goto spits beside old rail spikes. ‘We’re running out of time, boss. If we cross and those bandits smell us, they’ll chase long past dusk.’

A fight or a retreat. Do the others know he’s nearly gone inside—warm food, familiar eyes left behind for the sake of search? Isn’t it risk or regret, anyway?

Flashback hits: Riku alone at the school steps during the Collapse, hearing his dad’s voice, faint—’Find something worth breathing for.’ There’s that word again: worth.

‘We move,’ he says finally. ‘No ghosts will feed us. But maybe a memory can steer our feet.’ The group follows, close enough to touch. Kari holds a rusty revolver, careful as she steps between cracks. Shadows twitch. A chorus of noises grows stronger now. Footsteps? No, whispers—seven, maybe more men hiding past the curve, maybe all starving, too.

In the next world, kindness gets traded first for safety, then for a crust of bread. Riku doesn’t close his eyes. There’s a thin cord left, stretched already by wins and loss both big and small.

They wait just out of sight. Mai slides her compass through the dark, guided by hope thin as glass. Does hope sag under weight or does it shatter outright? Don’t you wonder which hurts more?

Sneaking closer, they catch snatches of song. The tune belongs to Old Japan— bittersweet, meant for mothers and children, lost now to fallen pillars. Riku feels it wind around old pain. Another reminder of what hunger takes first—a reason to sing.

They freeze as a tall silhouette steps into dusty sun-scraps near the platform. He’s cut rough but his coat is clean, and alone. He sets a crate and seats himself. One by one, shadows ease forward—seven, each younger than Goto, some almost kids. Survivors, barely threaded together. But in that crate? Tins, loaves, even water sealed and safe-looking.

Riku glances at Kari, almost grins for the first time in days. ‘Guess who just found next week’s meal.’ ‘Or a noose.’ Goto scoffs, never hopeful. Still, Riku runs a thumb over the steel of his handmade knife.

So whose rules shape tomorrow, reader? Is it fight-and-take, or feed those broken by war? Will Riku’s band make their play, or strike some sly bargain?

As Mai leans near, compass catching slant light, there’s a shout from the far track—a warning, or a call for help? Riku vaults down, gravel scratching his palms, breath sharp in his chest. The group fumbles down behind, old hunger burning all doubt away. Black smoke hot and thick spurts up behind a bunker, then gunshots ring—not far—echoing like old church bells for the broken and the bold. The last thing we see is Riku’s eyes wide under slashing, pale sun, blood on his cheek, fist closed around something new that glints bright as hope.

What would you do in that hush after, right before you choose: fight, flee, or reach out?
