Psychological Mysteries

Inside the Corners: The Black Opening Arc

The clock strikes three in the old city. Faint rain taps the college windows. In this rain-soaked room, Akira Tsukimi, a low-profile psychology student, comes face-to-face with his own shadow. He’s always had a way with puzzles— yet lately, even salt in tea tastes wrong, like his mind’s not stuck but… altered. Last night, his friend Sana came in scared. She whispered about dreams that bite back, ones that mark you after you wake.

Akira stares at the spidery cracks near his window. “Do you ever feel like you’re not the real you in your dreams?” he asks Sana without looking up. She fits in with bright hair, school medals, and quick chat, but he trusts her. “I sometimes think my hands move before I tell them,” Sana mumbles, stuffing her sleeve over a shaky wrist. Odd thing for her, right? Their chat ends with Sana refusing to walk home alone. Night waits outside like a trick question.

This rainswept mood creeps deep as students talk of sudden cold nights, forgotten hours, and ink-dark corners they never saw before. There’s always a string of coffee receipts, unfinished notebooks— or pieces left on Akira’s tidy desk that he swears he never touched.

Next class, Dr. Onoue grins like he owns the room. He starts a lesson on the ‘Puergilim Experiment’: a study claiming that a person’s memory can be rebuilt by slipping false pieces in, if you’re careful. Or if you know how dreams shape a mind when it’s weakest. “Are you sure you remember waking up today?” he asks. Who even knows, with eyes half-closed and dreams so sharp?

Akira tries to shrug it off. But after class, notes keep changing— answers swap with ones he never wrote. Sana drudges up a torn Polaroid of a boy neither recalls meeting. The photo’s odd: its angles bend strange if you look fast. Are you really good at checking things in your own life, or do you take most small facts on trust?

This gives Akira an itch he can’t name. Night brings fog that blurs maps, distracts clocks, leads you off-course— Akira gets lost by the train bridge and comes back long after he thinks he left. His phone log says 40 minutes missed. Sana, waiting by a bench, swears he only left for ten.

Secret codes appear on campus fences. Phrases like “Memory lies before it breaks,” in black pen nobody owns. Akira copies one down and puts it on the desk beside him. When he looks later, it reads: “Did you see what you remember, or remember what you see?” Has wanting an answer ever made you miss the truth right in front of you?

Next morning, Akira wakes cold and drained. His mind turns over a choice: chase these dark leads, or claim sleep and walk off the oddness. Of course, mystery wins. He needs to know if his own strikes of déjà vu are chance or warning. Behind his eyes, something new shapes up—a sharp fear that breaks his clear thoughts. aicg-7491-img-2-6a32045760ab0.png

So, he meets secret clock-mender Yuta in the library back hall. Yuta knows cycles, time, when wireless buzz and real moments fall out of sync. Yuta believes a ‘Black Opening’ forms where lots of people feel lost, and ripples run in the air. “Sometimes, they say, places remember you better than you do them,” he offers, voice flat, eyes tired.

Trial and error lead them to maps, odd news files, city plans— places marked missing every year by a stray cloud or disappeared tape. Sana shuffles in, tosses down her notebook, and flips to a page she claims she never wrote. “Play every day again. Remember what moves.”

Their hunt leads them around the rusted school park at night with only wind and feet in their ears. Yuta sparks up, “I saw my own grave here last year.” They all see shadows split in half under postal lamps. Which is worse: the dark playing tricks or knowing there’s a system made to make you forget?

By the tennis court, Akira feels a chill. Under a seat, his hand finds the slip with their class riddle written on it— in Akira’s writing, though he doesn’t recall. What’s the luck that makes you doubt your own hands work for you when you’re alone?

Morning breaks and Sana looks nervous. She gives Akira her medal. “Please. If I’m not myself again, call my mom,” she says, eyes huge and bright, “and I’ll do the same for you.” Akira feels the weight of the cheap silver stay cold in his pocket. Rain starts as soon as he steps outside.

Room lights stutter that evening. Computer blinks in a series of codes, somehow familiar. Yuta texts at one A.M. “Don’t sleep tonight. If you do— don’t open your eyes first.”

Akira sets his alarm, duffle by his feet, heart wild. Will anyone remember tomorrow if he disappears? Will you?

Staring into an open night, Akira senses the start just closes closer. He pulls open the notebook. Behind, a shadow not matching his form flickers, reaches. Fade to black.
