Festival Flicker: The Secret Lights of Sanegawa High
Synopsis
Sanegawa High lines its hallways with streamers and bright banners. It’s that one time in autumn when everyone’s spirits stand tall: festival week. Takumi Arai, known for his quiet nature and his love for tinkering, isn’t excited. Each year, his class picks flashy ideas that leave introverts like him out.
His best friend, Mari Sonoda, nudges him at his desk. ‘Hey, Takumi, are you going to vote, or daydream through this again?’ she whispers, half smiling. Across the room, Sota grins and pushes for a haunted maze. Rinko waves her sketchbook, suggesting a live art corner.
This year, Takumi wants to speak up. He’s got an idea: a light show better than what’s been done before. Will anyone listen to a boy who barely joins club chores?
Main Characters
- Takumi Arai: Knows machines. Never got credit for work done behind scenes. Wishes for friends to notice him, just once.
- Mari Sonoda: Loyal, often bold when Takumi fades out. She hates unfair votes and split crowds.
- Sota Kashiwagi: Class spirit, quick to plan. Doesn’t get why quiet kids like Takumi act so small.
- Rinko Ayana: Her joy is arts, sketches sly smiles, never speaks badly about anyone.
Conflict
Votes pit haunted maze against neon karaoke against Takumi’s plan. Festival board is split. Some think Takumi’s ‘Glow in the Dark Wonderland’ is too hard to set up. Others wonder, ‘Why trust him? Is he up for it?’ Even Mari can’t promise full support from her side. Just days left. What would you do?
At this point, Takumi nearly gives in. His blueprints sit hidden in his pack. But, late one afternoon, Mari spots sketches with softly drawn notes. ‘Dream bigger than white chalk on blackboards,’ reads one tag. It’s clear Takumi’s count on every part, from wires to safety checks.
Development
Inspired, Mari breaks the logjam in class. ‘Why should each year blend together? Aren’t any of you bored with the same ideas?’ The class listens.
Day after day, Takumi leads a small team, testing lanterns and timing little LED circuits with soft tunes. Mari sets up schedules and tracks battery swaps. Rinko crafts painted lantern covers with shy volunteers. Sota, shocked, shows up with snacks and, slowly, comes to admire the way their unused gym fills with soft glows each night—they’re building something real.
Festival Eve. All parts are ready. But early morning brings news: part of their gym leaks from rain. Half the lanterns short out. It’s a heart dropper. Someone has to start over with what little gear remains. Takumi grabs wire and says, ‘We’ll make do.’ Three hours later, all volunteers try hard rewiring as staff panic about safety checks. Even Sota, never a tech whiz, takes part.
Cliffhanger
Sunset, time for the show. The crowd packs in. Takumi’s thumb is on the switch, though nerves knot his gut. Rain drips down windows. Light team signals: ready to go? He’s not sure every circuit will even work—one spark, and every hour spent may fade in the dark as fast as dreams. Heads turn toward the stage, breath still. High above, one dim light blinks—a signal. Is it steady, or is Takumi’s festival a spark away from failing? Want to see how this ends?
