Prologue: A Trip to Remember
Aku Harada always wanted to prove himself outside school. Seventeen, skinny, black hair too wild to ever stay neat. Not the outdoors sort, but he’d followed his childhood friend Mina Ikari on this summer class trip. She liked to drag him everywhere.

Mistake in the Mountains
They should’ve picked an easy path near the campsite. Aku and Mina decided to sneak off for nicer photos along the old Kawaoka trail, since teachers never cared where they went as long as they came back in time for roll call. Jun, their quiet transfer student, and Kenzo Nomura, loud and brave (sometimes too much), followed with their sleeping bags and snacks.
All it took was the wrong turn at a mossy bend. Five minutes later, a freak downpour hit. Now lost, wet, foggy, they couldn’t find their way back. Phone signals: gone. Shoes full of mud. Aku thought, well, at least Fumio didn’t come—he was scared of dragonflies.
Nerves Settle: “We Can Do This!”
Lightning echoed in the ravine, spooking everyone. Mina was the first to forget about panicking. She helped Aku wrap Kenzo’s scraped shin, since he wouldn’t stop trying to climb for signal. Trees looked ready to fall, and the small wooden bridge over the creek had vanished into the flood.
“We stay here until it stops,” Jun said, wiping rain off her glasses. For once, no one argued. They set up a tarp. Thunder hit hard and close.
Long Night, Tight Crew
Did you ever wake up outside to the weird world of forest sounds? Aku couldn’t sleep. Mina snored and their heads poked each other under the one blanket. Kenzo cracked dumb jokes. Jun said nothing, staring at the map and trying not to let the group notice how scared she felt.
“Nobody’s coming for us tonight,” Mina whispered when Aku asked, “Do you think Mom’s worried yet?” Blankets damp, stomachs loud, feet cold, they tended each other the best they could.
Dawn’s Offers and Dangers
The rain eased. Early light gave foggy views, and insects got bolder, demanding slaps now and then. Jun spotted mushrooms and roots—“Safe, if you don’t want your tongue to swell,” she said precisely. Kenzo ranted about crawling things, actual survival, and where he’d rather be (his bed).
Mina hit back, “Eat or starve,” trying to sound brave. They laughed for a minute. Thoughts of home never left, but they ate what Jun cooked. Gathered new wood. Debate flared: Move out now, or play it safe and wait to see if anyone looked for them?
Trouble Finds Them
Aku’s foot slipped on wet rock next to the river before breakfast. He cut his palm. Mina fell more upset than he did; you should’ve seen her put on her first ‘bandaid’ splint out of a plastic straw and sticky leaves.
Mid-morning, they watched from the bluff as a search chopper panned miles away but never saw their stuck smoke signals dissipate into nothing. Hope faded. True survival mode set in.
Arguments at the Water’s Edge
Kenzo lost his patience. Crawled over rough cliffs, griped, “We can’t just hope!” Mina snapped at him when he slapped the lost phone. Aku took Jun aside. Asked, “Think we have more than today’s food left?”
Jun answered, practicing smiles: “You have to eat something green. Anything. The cold makes you burn fat. Trust me, this ends soon if we don’t get smart.”
Hunger and Decisions
Mina’s pain over missing home led her to tell a story about when her cat got stuck, refusing food for days until rescued. Broken talk became quiet. The crew took in each other’s faces. Tears now, but small. New plan built shimmer of hope: Track the river. Hide noisy tin wrappers. Leave cotton string bits behind as marker, even as rain threatened.
“Are You Stubborn Enough?”
The nicked-up crew followed the carved path down the gully. Aku’s voice said, “We watch for roots.” Sometimes they all chanted that, side by side, naming tall trees, passing roots, sharing pointless pop quiz facts about rivers from Jun. If this all sounds tense, it should—sun cut through grey, urging them to move faster. Hours passed with only twisted hunger keeping them pushy.
Lost, but Not Broken
Late that day, a leaf drone — an odd scuffling in the undergrowth — sent everyone to a halt. Kenzo raised an emergency whistle, but low battery. Mina pointed: “Smoke! There!” Nobody breathed.
It wasn’t from their own failed fire. An old squat house, mossy roof, just out of sight over a worn bridge appeared through the brush.
Doors ajar, shadows within, the group faced a split in the path. Aku glanced back. Mina counted beans left. Jun set one trembling hand on his sleeve. “You think we could trust whoever lives there?” Quiet question, scared more by human risks than the dark.
Step forward, or stay outside until help? Is blind courage alive, or dumb luck what wins days like this?
Cliffhanger: An Unknown Welcome
The wind picked up again, slamming the squat house door against its frame. Their only way forward seemed blocked. Or was it a chance?
A strange old tune started up inside. The group could only look at each other in ask. Did you ever feel both so scared and so ready all at once?
Doors creak, debate grows. Next, Aku steels himself and steps through, backpack tight. Scene fades out as the camera moves behind, teetering between the safety of the group and that unpredictable new world inside.
