Shades in the Library: The Mirror’s Secret

Rain fell hard outside Anegawa High. The rooftop leaked, but Junpei Shima, a second-year with a talent for puzzles, didn’t mind thunder. Junpei liked odd riddles, unsolved things.

Purple twilight smeared the sky. Junpei drifted through the silent halls, lost in thought, when he saw a girl stop by the old library again. Sakura Uenishi. She never looked up at him. Or anyone, for that matter.

Strange, don’t you think? Who spends that much time by ancient, dusty doors?

One day, Junpei challenged Sakura. “Is it good in there, or just haunted?”
She turned. Her fair blush almost matched her violet eyes. “Maybe it’s both. Want to see a secret?”

He followed, sleep in his step. But you would have too, right? A cracked piano sat near the usually locked reading room. Sakura bent down, searched under the keys, and thumbed out a ring. The door creaked open.

The library, with bean-shaped tables and aged ceiling mold, looked like any other place. But it wasn’t. Sakura snapped the handle; a third row of bookcases each reflected their faces in a tall, wrapped mirror. No light hit the glass directly.

“It’s been here since the school was built,” Sakura said, voice low.
Junpei scoffed. “A mirror? That’s all?” Something nagged his gut, but he wouldn’t say so then.
Sakura, showing a rare grin, traced five small scratches on the frame. Letters appeared, washed out and not in modern style.

He stooped closer. Hatsuyume, or was it an old name? Junpei met Sakura’s eyes in the glass—but suddenly she wasn’t looking at him. She stared behind him. Every hair rose.

A shadow shape swept past in the reflection. It hadn’t moved in real space.

Junpei stiffened and spun. The library behind him, empty. In the mirror, black shapes thinned and curled over the shelves.
“See that?” His voice cracked. He hesitated. A grin, not his own, eyed him back in the glass. He hadn’t smiled yet.

Sakura stepped beside him. “Some nights, they walk here. Mostly if you ask…it’s questions that get you.”
“What kind of questions?” Junpei whispered.

Thunder boomed above.
“Big ones,” Sakura drew her finger along the silver backing. For a second, Junpei’s face erased in mist. When the air cleared, etched on the mirror he read: Whom do you seek?
His heartbeat echoed in his lungs. “Did you do that?” he gasped.

“No, it writes by itself—if the glass likes the visitor.” That felt true. The rest was guesswork. Hogwarts Library this was not.

The shadows in the mirror started to murmur. Books fluttered. Footsteps patted among deserted stacks—with no weight. You ever heard something in complete silence, and can’t forget a day later? Certain quiet gets inside people.

Sakura and Junpei argued about the right reply. He toyed with honesty. “I want to find my brother, Fumiya. He vanished two years ago.” He blushed but the words came unspilled, like breath held too long.
Sakura tipped her head. “That’s not how I’d answer. But okay…”

The mirror’s fog shifted. An icy voice replied in their heads:
‘Show him. Show the seeker.’
The mirror grew blacker at bottom, silver-white near top. Someone now swirled behind the glass: tall, older, with kitestring-white hair. Junpei gasped curses he didn’t want Sakura to hear. aicg-8111-img-2-6a350e73607d0.png

Sakura reached for Junpei’s hand. Two more shadows split off and hunched down among footsteps.
“What do we do?” Junpei whispered.
The air cracked, cold and bright. All sounds sank. Even heartbeats grew faint.

Sakura squeezed Junpei’s hand, whispering, “Don’t answer twice unless you’re sure. This mirror remembers everybody’s words. It’s hungry for stories about regrets.”

The library seemed further now, as if set apart, languid and pale, while rain bathed the night outside. Junpei spied flickers of his old life in the surface—the villages, the day he lost Fumiya at night market, ferris wheel blinking out in fog. Heavy, huh? Sometimes you surprise yourself when loss pushes too deep.

The glass fluttered with clouds. Suddenly, the tall figure in the mirror spoke—a long, base hum under his words.
“Can you undo what has happened? Or only chase missing faces?”

Junpei shook. Who writes these twisted quizzes anyway?

Now, Sakura, hesitant, said, “I come for forgiveness. For my sister.” The air blinked once more, switching colors, and a tiny child leapt in and out of shadows behind Sakura’s left shoulder. Past, alive, not alive? Didn’t matter. Regret grooms its own face in those left behind.

A dull growl brewed below the floor. Several hands banged at once against the inside of the glass.
“Time’s ending here,” the figure croaked.

Junpei’s lips burned. Sakura bit them—her own—but neither moved their feet, not yet.

You’ve watched those scenes, right? The ones where nobody says a word, but it’s louder than shouting?

Wind sheared, cold air swept in. The pair locked eyes on their own split images.
Junpei nudged Sakura closer to the mirror, as if she had answers. She was years ahead: face gleaming brittle-hot, tears about to slide. “Why do you come, over and over, if you’re scared every time?” Junpei pressed.
She shivered. Whatever story the mirror wanted, it was hers, not his.

The mirror flared. A face, familiar now, pressed forward—that long white hair, those thin, bright, mercyless eyes.
“Shall we open the gate between the panels?” the face hissed. Sakura dropped Junpei’s hand. aicg-8111-img-3-6a350f276a2bb.png

The glass went red, then black. Screaming, like a kettle, piped under their feet. Junpei charged toward the mirror—but it rippled as if under water. An old cracked stopwatch clinked to his feet—the one from Fumiya’s coat, years ago.
Was someone inside held, or replaced?

He snatched the timepiece. At the same time, Sakura shrieked as the shadows funneled, crowding the glass. She hammered the rim, crying, “Let her go! Let my sister free!”
The tall figure leered. His hand found Sakura’s head in the glass mirror-angle. Then it split, reality divided by paper-thin boundaries.

What choice did Junpei have? He threw the watch straight at the figure, shattering the silence. Would you have thrown it? Maybe you would.

The glass howled, dim red now everywhere. Time slowed. Rain on the roof stopped moving. In the mirror, Junpei saw all the missing: brother, friend, neighbor, each face yearning. Another choice, or trap?

Sakura called, her voice doubled now, “Don’t look back! Keep facing the mirror!” She pressed forward across cracking wood as rooms behind splintered into gloom.

The library lights flickered, gone entirely now. Both kids strained, pushing hands to glass. There—a shock ran from mirror to mind, as if memory shook them loose from time.

And now the roof’s gone. The library spins upward, book by book, horizon nowhere to be found.

Just when Junpei thought the shadow figure was coming through the glass—
the scene cuts.
Total black.
Then only the sound of rattled breathing and a half-muffled child’s laugh.
Do you remember the creepiest sound you ever heard?

Next: they wake. Still on library rug. Mirror, cracked, but not shattered.

Sakura’s hand crushed Junpei’s. A crumpled old side-photo of two sisters and Junpei’s lost brother spilled from a nearby book. The sound of nighttime crows, far above.

A last line appeared on the cracked glass: Seekers shape their future or follow their past.aicg-8111-img-4-6a350ee04b1ed.png
What does it mean? Who got pulled through—the brother, Sakura’s sister, or someone else entirely? Neither says a word.

The scene closes on them—soaked, shivering, clutching that clock—and a last blink of red swirling deep in the half-lit mirror.aicg-8111-img-5-6a350f2a733ca.png

Cliffhanger: Next episode, they follow the faded photo lead. Was the library just the first gateway? The mirror has begun to crack—and it wants to finish the story.
