Crowd way past quiet now. Ryo’s quick feet and sharp eyes edge him ahead. 6-5 match point, sun slicing through hazy gray. Teammates chew nails, Coach Senji steels his smile.
Kiyo swings, sends a final cross-court, blinding return. Ryo runs flat, dives hard for the baseline ball, and: freeze-frame. The last point stops mid-motion, ball hanging on the frame’s last split-second. “To go forward, you have to lose something,” voiceover now, Ryo hush-low, pain but also peace.
